Throughout the years, the Sonic franchise has spawned off into many licensed food products, but none are as famous as the Blue Bunny Sonic Ice Cream Bar with Gumball Eyes. For years now, the bar has been infamous for its gumball eyes, but what many people don't know is that the bar has actually existed for over two decades! Throughout all that time, the bar has gone through design changes and various wrapper designs, some of which are even lost to time itself.

I saw this video the day it came out two years ago and it’s still one of my all time favorites. I hadn’t had a Sonic bar in over 15 years! Ever since I saw this video I’ve been craving a Sonic bar so bad, and I’ve been searching far and wide for them every time I see an ice cream truck, but I never could find one since blue bunny never came to my area. Today, I finally found a truck that had them, and had my first Sonic bar in nearly 2 decades. And my goodness, it was more than worth the wait, everything I dreamed of and more!

I just contacted Blue Bunny about buying a box, and in short, this is what they told me: ---- "Impulse items are not available for retail sale through grocery stores. And, unfortunately, due to the inherent dangers of shipping items on dry ice, we do not have a service to sell directly to the consumer. Our suggestion would be to see if the Ice Cream Truck owner could order a box for you. The Ice Cream Truck owner would need to order from his distributor". --- On a side note, their customer service is killer. They got back to me in less than 12 hours :)

Funny thing about these bars is they aren't even remotely similar to "ice cream", besides being frozen and sugary. They're essentially just frozen, flavored corn-syrup, but somehow they manage to be so irresistably good. I think it's more the texture / mouth-feel, they just feel so good to sink your teeth into on a hot day. P.S. I've been eating these for over two decades, myself, and now I really got a hankering for one!

Oh man, you've never had a Sonic ice cream bar? I grew up on those bars and saw the change from the X-treme to Adventure packaging and the black to green eyes. They easily stain your mouth and tongue blue, but they're great. Anytime I see an ice cream truck this is my go to bar!

I bet any memorabilia with "Sonic X-Treme" on it is probably pretty valuable these days, even the candy bar wrappers (if anyone decided to save those that is). Funny thing as I never saw ANY of that game's promotional items when I was younger. Not many quantities of it must have been made. Or the more likely scenario is that they were all bought up by collectors as soon as word of the game's cancellation went public...

I felt bad when I heard him say he picked Spongebob instead. Where I live at least you can get Spongebob easily in 7-11 and I saw them in a lot of Good Humor vending machines at Service Stations on the highway. But Sonic is a lot harder to get. You can always order them in bulk from an ice cream vendor though and they'll ship them in dry ice. I love these and blue raspberry is my favorite flavor. But yeah it can REALLY stain your tongue and mouth.

I never played Sonic as a kid (apparently my mom liked playing it before I was born but by the time I came around she didn’t have her Genesis anymore, I was heartbroken when I found out) I grew up with Nintendo and my first console was an N64, but boy oh boy do I remember always wanting those Sonic the Hedgehog character ice creams because there was always something about THAT character that drew young me to him more than the other available character ice creams (except maybe Bubbles), even if I had no connection to the games

I used to buy the first version of the Sonic bar around 1996 when I was a kid, the eyeballs were black instead but it was literally the same flavor as the newer ones Also The Lost World Jurassic Park also released one around 97 and it was bigger than the others and tasted something like watermelon. I can't find any image of that one The Mario bar tasted the best of them all imo

I live in brazil and these bars don’t exist here, when i saw this video I thought: am i ever gonna taste one of these? Some weeks later my dad and my mom said that we were going to have a trip to the US. In the end of the trip i saw an IceCream truck that was selling these. I was actually going to taste them! The bar was obviously flawed on the eyes, (no surprise) and it tasted pretty good! It’s weird to think that one second you’re thinking if you’ll ever get to do something and in the other one you’re doing it.

When I was a little kid, my parents would occasionally let me get an ice cream from the ice cream truck. Being a BIG Sonic fan at that age, I of course got the Sonic ice cream. The year? Well, had to be right around 1996. And yep, that Sonic ice cream had black gumball eyes. They bled dark blue as they melted! I remember that classic Sonic sticker on the truck, too! Never saw the Sonic Xtreme one, which is a bummer. Guess I should do a deep dive through my old family photos to see if I ever had a snapshot of me with one!

Heres some info. The Sonic adventure one actually lasted longer then 2004 being mixed with the sonic x. At least in NH and MA because there where ice cream trucks that advertised both. My brother wanted the X I wanted adventure. Adventure was the same as X but lighter blue. With green eyes.
