Bro I appreciate your enthusiasm. I am currently hypothesising something that if a learning goal is more planned, it will create more excitement in learner. What do you think about this?
@newbygamer3 жыл бұрын
@@bertulgar5147 I think it could. I think it depends on if the person is already interested in the subject. In our cases, we like philosophy. Seeing a literal map of what there is to explore can motivate someone as it shows a clear direction of what there is left to know. That being said, you want to allow some room for spontaneity, so just how Carneades didn't spend 5 hours on each subject, it allows the learner to dicover new things within the subtopics despite having a really detailed road map.

I majored in Philosophy, and only recently did I realize that our department never had a metaphilosophy class. I.e, there were never any courses offered on the topic of philosophy of philosophy. The closest things I took to it was a series of classes on Kant and a class on the philosophy of science. The book "4 Dimensions of Philosophy " would probably be a good textbook for it.

Well, "objectively" not really. The entire concept of Objectivity is subjective in and of itself. Art specifically is, more then any other human endeavour, especially sensitive to dogma and objectivity is dogma. If Art can be objective, then it has devolved into something else (my opinion). That said, I personally find this video to be amazing.

This lecture about the map of philosophy is very interesting and very informative as well as very helpful. It is a great way to learn about philosophy as a whole. More importantly, it is a wonder that you can teach things that are not so simple as to be taught as easily as you can teach them. However, the art of putting so many ideas into such brevity is not only a matter of skill but also a matter of practice. This is also explanatory for understanding how brevity is beauty. Pakistan

TLDR: Philosophy connects different disciplines, uses logic to evaluate language, and explores various philosophical traditions and positions worldwide. 1. 00:00 🧠 Philosophy connects different disciplines and uses logic to evaluate language, including formal classical logic, higher order logic, philosophy of math, modal logic, and various categories and types of non-classical logics. 1.1 Philosophy serves as the connecting substance between different disciplines, allowing them to communicate and honor their original connection, as evidenced by the fact that obtaining a PhD in any discipline still requires a doctorate in philosophy. 1.2 Logic and philosophical methods are at the center of philosophy, connecting various disciplines and translating language into something that can be evaluated by math and logic, with formal classical logic being the foundation and including propositional logic, categorical logic, and predicate calculus. 1.3 Higher order logic goes beyond quantifying over objects and includes quantifying over predicates and sets, such as type theory and set theory, which are related to the philosophy of math. 1.4 Philosophy of math encompasses the connection between math and logic, including questions about the reality of mathematical objects, and modal logic is a framework for understanding different ways of speaking, such as temporal logic for the logic of time. 1.5 Epistemic logic and deontic logic are categories within motor logics, while non-classical logics, such as many-valued logics and computability logic, question the basic premises of classical logic. 2. 05:30 📚 Non-classical logics question classical logic principles, informal logic focuses on inductive arguments, abductive reasoning and thought experiments are used in philosophy to form premises and arguments. 2.1 Linear logic, non-reflexive logic, relevance logic, and intuitionistic logic are all non-classical logics that question fundamental principles of classical logic. 2.2 Informal logic is a type of non-deductive logic that focuses on inductive arguments, which use specific cases to make generalizations. 2.3 Every time a rock is dropped, it will go towards the ground, which is an example of abductive reasoning, similar to the watch argument for the existence of God, where the best explanation for finding a watch is that it had a designer. 2.4 The truth of premises does not guarantee the truth of the conclusion, and philosophical methods, such as thought experiments and experimental philosophy, use intuitions and logic to form the basis of premises and arguments in philosophy. 3. 10:01 🌍 The history of philosophy is divided into different eras, with significant contributions from various philosophers throughout time, leading to the expansion of different philosophical traditions and positions worldwide. 3.1 The history of philosophy can be divided into different eras, such as the ancient Greeks and Romans, followed by medieval philosophy with the scholastics attempting to reconcile ancient Greek texts and the Bible. 3.2 Thomism, Patrology, and various philosophers from different time periods have contributed to the development and advancement of philosophy, with the 17th and 18th centuries being particularly significant due to the emergence of new ideas and influential philosophers such as Descartes, Locke, Leibniz, Hobbes, Kant, Hume, Rousseau, and Voltaire, while the 19th century saw further expansion and growth in philosophy with the contributions of Mill, Hegel, James, and Nietzsche. 3.3 New philosophical positions emerged throughout history, leading to the expansion of philosophy as more people became educated, and in the twentieth century, philosophers like Bertrand Russell and Ludwig Wittgenstein made significant contributions, although summarizing more recent periods becomes increasingly challenging. 3.4 Analytic philosophy, which originated from the ancient Greeks, is the dominant tradition in the English-speaking world, but there are other philosophical traditions, including Native American philosophy. 3.5 Native American philosophy focuses on indigenous rights and sovereignty, while Afro-Caribbean philosophy explores multiculturalism and colonialism, and Latin American philosophy delves into social issues and feminist philosophy; in Europe, continental philosophy encompasses various positions such as phenomenology, poststructuralism, hermeneutics, existentialism, critical theory, speculative realism, and German idealism. 3.6 African philosophy is complex and diverse, with a lack of consistency due to the impact of colonialism, distinct differences between North African and sub-Saharan culture, and the influence of Western philosophy. 4. 17:10 🌍 Eastern philosophy includes Chinese traditions like Confucianism, Taoism, and Buddhism, while Japanese, Korean, Indian, Tibetan, and Islamic philosophies have their own distinct beliefs; value theory in philosophy explores aesthetics and the philosophy of beauty in various art forms. 4.1 Eastern philosophy is a collection of various traditions, including Chinese philosophy which encompasses Confucianism, Taoism, and Buddhism, with Confucius being influential in the region. 4.2 Japanese, Korean, Indian, Tibetan, and Islamic philosophies are distinct from each other, with each having its own unique combination of cultural beliefs and influences. 4.3 During the Middle Ages, the Arab world preserved ancient Greek texts, leading to the development of Islamic philosophy, while Polynesian philosophy has a post-colonialist aspect, and Australian philosophy has its own identity within the analytic philosophy world. 4.4 Value theory in philosophy encompasses aesthetics, which includes the philosophy of beauty, art, literature, film, music, and visual art, with each form posing unique questions and perspectives. 4.5 The philosophy of beauty explores aesthetic judgment, value, and cognition, including the categorization of the sublime, humor, and horror. 5. 22:32 🗺 Political philosophy explores questions of justice, government, freedom, and law, while feminism addresses equality and the philosophy of culture explores the relationship between philosophy and culture; value theory explores the nature of what is good and ethics, and normative ethics includes consequentialism, deontology, and virtue ethics. 5.1 Political philosophy explores questions of justice, government, freedom, and law, including topics such as types of government, power dynamics, and human rights. 5.2 Feminism is a significant part of social philosophy, addressing questions of equality and the need for both equal and unequal treatment in certain areas. 5.3 The philosophy of culture explores the relationship between philosophy and culture, including questions about the creation of culture and its impact on gender, race, sex, and sexuality. 5.4 Value theory in philosophy includes moral theory and ethics, specifically meta ethics which explores the nature of what is good. 5.5 Is good just an opinion or does it exist separate from our subjective views, and how can we divide things into good and bad in ethics? 5.6 Consequentialism, deontology, and virtue ethics are the main theories in normative ethics, with applied ethics being the application of these theories to real-world problems. 6. 27:58 📚 Epistemology studies knowledge and its principles, while metaphysics explores the existence of objects, both of which are relevant to ethical issues. 6.1 Epistemology is the study of knowledge, including its principles, varieties, definitions, and other related concepts such as belief states, wisdom, trust, and collective mentality. 6.2 A posteriori and a priori knowledge are two main distinctions in philosophy, with a wide range of epistemic theories and experiences, all connected by epistemic logic. 6.3 Metaphysics, specifically ontology, is the study of the existence of objects and different ontologies have varying perspectives on what exists and what doesn't. 6.4 Philosophy explores the nature of objects, including their composition, identity, personhood, and properties, which are relevant to ethical issues such as abortion. 8

Although this is very impressive, I think that this is a Western understanding of philosophy. It makes perfect sense for an Occidental orientation of the last 2000-3000 years. However, Eastern Philosophy is poorly represented here. There are many errors showing a lack of knowledge on the relationship between certain 'philosophies' (i.e. Indian-Buddhist-Japanese) and the 'non-dualist' inner nature of such conceptions of reality obliterate the Western tradition which is called 'Philosophy'. If philosophy as we know it, how it's taught at university level and even at schools, is English - then the Eastern tradition is Klingon. The approach is totally different. I wish I knew this when I studied. Also I wish I had a useful map like this describing how all the pertinent things in my courses linked to each other. Great job!

A good presentation overall, the only part I'm a bit disappointed is the history of philosophy. It's somewhat a bit skewed, just a few example : - Didn't mention about the Pre-Socratic - It overlook Neoplatonism, which was one of the most influential (after Peripatetic) up until 19th century. - Augustine & Boethius is actually from the late antiquity. - It skips the Graeco-Arabic-Latin translation movement which is why the Latin can read Aristotle (and also overlook Islamicate philosophy, a pretty interesting era considering there are constructive discussions between the 3 Abrahaimic faith) - In Medieval Philosophy, although Anselm & Thomas Aquinas is the most famous philosopher. Henry of Ghent was more reflective of this era. And also Dun Scotus was a more interesting figure (although I like Peter Abelard and his intentionalism.) Although it's understandable why it's presented that way, it's the typical undergraduate philosophy course. Most of the things I've mentioned are only known to specialist in its era. The only reason I can point out is because of "History of Philosophy" podcast from Professor Peter Adamson (he specializes in Neoplatonism in Arabic Philosophy, though he's always discuss with his colleagues who specialize in each of the period)

I would start with logic, but that's just me (especially if you have a mathematics background). If you like thinking about time travel and alternate universes, Metaphysics is for you. If you like thinking about the possibility that we are in the Matrix, or dreaming, check out epistemology. If you want to prove something is right or wrong, or figure out what those mean try ethics. Ethics, philosophy of religion, and philosophy of science are very applied, while logic is more "pure" to use the mathematical term. Metaphysics and Epistemology are somewhere in between.

Where the main chapters. Later on, I read Aristotle's Metaphysics and his both Ethics.. Later on I tried to understand the "De Ente et Essentia" from Aquinas.I stop there, for me Philosophy is the reflection upon de ente (ens) as a subject and as a verb.

Excuse me if I missed it, but are Existentialism and Phenomenology on this map? Specifically, in the philosophy of perception section, I believe both would contain a large body of work. Additionally, I know this may sound a bit insane, but I'd like you to go in depth on the many interconnections within different schools of philosophy - how a certain school's epistemology, metaphysics and view on perception and consciousness are connected (perhaps even how they contradict or contribute to the development of other schools of philosophy). Going a layer deeper, I would like suggestions for literature on the connections between philosophy and psychology - ethics (especially normative ethics), metaphysics (especially answers to nihilism), epistemology - the role of reason and perception in the development of personality (which overlaps with the study of identity). Long story short, I'm looking to go really deep in those questions - perhaps a madman's errand, but it seems of extreme importance to me.
@CarneadesOfCyrene7 жыл бұрын
Existentialism and Phenomenology are generally considered Continental Philosophy, and while I briefly mention them in the discussion of other philosophical traditions, I intended this map to focus more on analytic philosophy. In terms of connections, philosophy is so connected that it is mind-boggling. I started out trying to draw all of the conenctions between the different areas, but I ended up just connecting everything. There's a separate field of philosophy connecting just about any spot on that map, and in some of the other videos here I go into more depth on those subjects. Suggestions for literature, that is quite a list. I usually start in the bibliographies of the SEP articles on whatever topics you are interested in.

"Apologies that this video is so long"?!? Are you kidding me? This video was pretty damn GOOD! Not only could I have probably taken MORE of it, not only did I learn a thing or two from it, it was one of those rare videos I watched all the way through in one viewing! (I mean there are A LOT of good videos to watch, but rare is the video on KZbin that I feel compelled to watch in its entirety in the first viewing...Most I squirrel away in the library que for later viewing, but I sat through this one pretty glued to my seat. Granted it was a TOILET seat, but STILL....🤣)

Science is rigor (or the body of knowledge thereby accumulated). Logic is a sub-set of science - relationships that always replicate. Math is a sub-set of logic that deals exclusively with rigorous relationships of quantity.

It is really interesting to see how the general approach can differ from a country to another. I study philosophy in France, an Analytic philosophy and logic for example are hardly taught here, we mostly study continental philosophers. There are many modern anglo-saxon philosophers after Mill we never mention. For instance, we never hear of William James ! Many do read his work of course, but it would cross the mind of nobody here to count him as a philosopher of the XIXth century whose influence could be compared to the influence of Nietzsche or Hegel ! Thank you for this video ;)
@CarneadesOfCyrene3 жыл бұрын
Continental and analytic are quite divergent traditions, I suspect a lot of it is the language barrier since the analytic styles are fairly ubiquitous in the English speaking world, but continental styles are much more common in Francophone countries. We barely touch on Husserl, Heidegger, or Sartre, but spend a lot of time on Russell, Wittgenstein, Carnap, Tarski, and the like.

As a computer science major I was wandering if you guys do discrete Mathematics . Since alot of course is based on the fundamentals of logic like ours.
@CarneadesOfCyrene6 жыл бұрын
We do set theory, logic, theories of proof, and their implications. Godel's incompleteness theorems, Tarski's proof of the undefinability of truth etc. So I would say that we ahve some overlap with discrete mathematics, but there are things that they do that we don't and plenty that philosophy, or even logic does which they don't, at least not explicitly (Things like deontic logic, or epistemic logic, though I know some CS gets into temporal logic). Hoepfully that helps!

Great work! Do you plan to make it an illustrated book: Map of Philosophy? Or maybe a video course where all sections covered? Just wanted to add one more item to medieval philosophy - Augustinianiam and Thomism are representatives of scholastic western philosophies and there was also eastern romanian empire (Byzantine) greek philosophers: Basil the Great, Gregory the Theologian, Gregory of Nissa, then pseudo Dionisius Areopagit, sant Maximus confessor and then sent Gregory Palama. Western scholastics and eastern philosophers has different view on God’s essence-energies distinctions and Trinity (Filioque for westerners, energy as created power vs energy as God's modus of existance on the east) just FYI

This is great, but I can explicitly read that you are an analytic philosopher. I personally don't find Logic to be the centrepiece of philosophy (although I am trained in logic). I would name the centrepiece (if there must be one) as something more along the lines of ontology (explicitly not Metaphysics); I am currently studying 'What is Being' (or, what does it mean to be, or, what does 'is' mean) through the work of Martin Heidegger. I also note that Edmund Husserl saw phenomenology as that study which would be the basis for all philosophy. His claim is debatable, and in fact I'd love to hear others views. I would place myself more in the continental tradition. Why does it always feel so hard (and I mean this in the sense of ones personal thought), to bridge the analytic continental divide. It feels like they are different disciplines.
@reiusballa2 жыл бұрын
I totally agree. This is a potentially useful map for analytic philosophy. But I mean, luckily I found out that he said that himself: "Existentialism and Phenomenology are generally considered Continental Philosophy, and while I briefly mention them in the discussion of other philosophical traditions, I intended this map to focus more on analytic philosophy." which solves our point. A lot of people don't recognize Continental Philosophy, I would even say it has less value in the Academic context.
@havenbastion2 жыл бұрын
The base of philosophy needs to be divided into three, each with its own tools and aims; a) Academic Philosophy is about organizing people, history, and jargon. Answers and solutions are optional. b) Practical Wisdom is the ordinary meaning of philosophy by ordinary people. It's always contingent on priority (including perspective (including knowledge and embodied experience) and salience) and solutions (custom action plan) are the purpose. It includes axiology/aesthetics, ethics (formalized morality), and politics (ethics + scale). c) Truth Wisdom is metaphysics (including mereology) and epistemology (including logic) and provides answers (actionable framework of understanding).

Is the definition of classical logic as formal logic only part of analytic philosophy language and definition, or is it the same in continental philosophy? I mean that sometimes we refer to classical logic and classical philosophy with reference of classical Greece, while we also sometimes speak of formal logics (variuos types of formal logic).
