Best all around TE I ever saw play in 35 plus years of watching football. Underrated reciever, didn't have sexy stats on a run dominant team. They would have him block Reggie White one on one! That is how fucking insane of a blocker he was.

Mark Bavaro is an integral part of two Super Bowl Championship teams and certainly a high profile part of the New York Giants Hall of Fame (Ring of Honor). On the down side, he was such a big target and refused to go down, taking many vicious hits during his both his college and NFL career, plus a serious knee condition, cutting his playing career and career stats short, and that's probably why he won't make the NFL Hall of Fame. But we will always remember him for the six years of pure joy that he brought us during the 1985-1990 period. And if NFL Hall of Fame status were measured as value to two Super Bowl championship teams within a four-year period, he would definitely be there.

I got the chance to meet him and have my picture taken with him when I was 13 (I’m 46 now). The Giants used to go to training camp with the Patriots up here at Bryant College (now University). This was back when they let fans go right up to players after practice. I remember him being jacked, soft-spoken and resembled Sylvester Stallone. Lawrence Taylor, Carl Banks and Joe Morris were also very nice. Phil Simms was holding out that summer.

We don’t hear enough from Mark Bavarro . He was the premier TE in his days. I can watch him carrying the entire 49’s defense on his back for 20 yards 100 times on KZbin and never get tired of it. If not for the star power of LT, Simms, coach Parcel etc… Could have easily been the biggest attraction. Don’t get me wrong, the was LT’s team by all means, but Mark was able to still stand out. Not enough is written or mentioned bout him on a national platform, but in NY, he’s forever beloved.

Mark Bavaro in 1986 had the greatest complete year for a tight end in the history of the NFL. In 1990 he caught 33 passes for the season and 13 passes for the playoffs. I don't think Mark remembers but I do, he only dropped one pass for the entire season and playoffs. A home game against the Redskins IN 1990

How he is not in Canton is beyond me. He saved so many big games from getting out of the hands of the team winning, that it is crazy how people don't remember. He was always a key read for Simms and Hostetler. The offense was always a run first offense, and his blocking was top notch. A great leader and ambassador for the team off the field. To this day we remember him as a true great. There needs to be a place in Canton for TEs like him. He is my favourite giants' offensive weapon of all time, as he did it all, while representing the best of what a NFL legend is supposed to be. He could have played in any era and not adapted accordingly. The man is an icon in my eyes. Easily in my top 10 TEs that I have ever seen.
@waynejohanson1083
@waynejohanson1083 3 жыл бұрын
I think one of the reasons he is not in the hall if he did not have enough career receptions. But there is a lot more to a tight end then how many catches he has. How good of a blocker is he. After at is a Tight End not really part of the offensive line.
@bauerj3398
@bauerj3398 3 жыл бұрын
Fun to watch, but not even remotely a HOF'er. He had two really good years, and that was it. A lot of it was due to injuries, but that does not change the fact that he had a 2 year-peak, and then nothing. The guy averaged less than 3 catches and barely 35 yards a game. And even his output in the playoffs does not bolster his argument for the Hall.
@wbdrugstrat
@wbdrugstrat 3 жыл бұрын
@@bauerj3398 A well put argument. I definitely think that he is just one of those iconic players that fans could connect with due to his lunch bucket 9 to 5 attitude about the game. The ring of honor, along with the hearts and minds of us fans will do just fine. Thanks for the reply, and keep safe.

@dp233332
@dp233332 3 жыл бұрын
patsfan here and ive occasionally sorta thought the same thing-these other 3 whove responded to you clearly have no clue what theyre talking about...Gronk could block like him if not far better-despite richard marinos likely hometown and oldschool biases he clearly wasnt inferior in any way to Bavarro, and before injuries slowed him down Gronk was definitely not sluggish compared to Kelce or Kittle...TBH Kelce and Kittle are jokes compared to Gronk...If the Pats had been able to put weapons like T.Hill S.Watkins and Hardman around Gronk-players who can all stretch the field and keep the safeties and nickel away from Gronks spine knees and ankles for a few extra steps after Gronk makes the catch-he never would have taken nearly that kind of beating...If hes so sluggish how come despite never having had the benefit of being surrounded by WRs who can stretch the field as a Patriot he still averaged over 15yards per reception while(battling injuries),compared to the less than 13yrds per rec Kelce avgs or even the 13.5 Kittles avgs?Pathetic to hear anyone speak that way about gronk...was the most dominant and complete TE the game has seen, was arguably the best weapon anyone had to work with and most dominant player in the league for the better part of a decade...no other Tight End has been that kind of player and he was a better blocker than the overwhelming majority of the Pats offensive linemen as well...
@dp233332
@dp233332 3 жыл бұрын
@Richard Marino lmfao sounds like maybe youve run out of vagisil again...gronk finally snapped after being screwed over by the league for yrs.. he was in fact blatantly held on that play uve mentioned, but the refs didnt call it...i won't say what he did was right but after yrs of having players grabbing him and get away with it while he ran routes and then spear his knees while he make the catch and the refs increasingly calling him for opi seemingly everytime a wind gust pushes a db or lb eventually he was gonna snap...bavarro was on a different level alright-a lower one...he didnt carry any offense let alone a team...the nyg defense was the better half of that team and their running game the better half of their offense....gronk was best option of the pats primary method for moving the ball and their offense was the better half of their team...like it or not gronk was better and tougher than bavarro ever was...deal with it

@@dp233332 Well said. I was complimenting Gronk by comparing him to Bavaro. I’m as old school as it gets, and I saw almost all of Bavaro’s games as a Giant, many in person, but there is no doubt in my mind that Gronk is the greatest tight end ever. Bavaro is a great story of a great player. So is the story of Phil McConkey.

I'm a Lions fan unfortunately but Mark Bavaro was a beast no doubt he belongs in the Hall of Fame and you could tell how much respect Bill Parcells had for him that's an honor and that says it all

Who else did Bill Parcells respect, you ask? You guessed it. Frank Stallone.

The '87 Super Bowl was the first I ever watched. I was 8 years old and my father let me stay up late with my uncle to watch it. I grew up in Florida but my family was from NY and I remember really getting a sense of this during the game. Great game and great night. I think I still have Bavaro's playing cards somewhere in a box. That Bavaro to McConkey catch is forever ingrained into my memory.

Will never forget his injury against the Chargers in 1989. He was sandwiched and took a devastating hit on his knee and you knew he was in trouble. The Giants kept lying saying he was week to week and I was like no way is this guy coming back. He was never the same player. What a shame but he was great.

That was Rickey Jackson #57 who bounced off him in that one tackle. I always wondered why he’s not in the Hall of Fame ?

No one plays this anymore. They don’t have it in them. If they do, they gotta do a “team dance” in the end zone. I miss Summeral and Madden.
