Last summer I worked a security job at an otherwise abandoned mall, graveyard shift. Real tiny place, relic of the 80’s. While surprisingly well-kept I’d still feel somewhat perturbed with the overwhelming vacancy. To spice up my nights I’d listen to this and wander the halls, imagining Frank and Allan blazing, synthaxe and all on a makeshift stage atop the sky bridge overlooking the indoor plaza. I always put on Humpty Dumpty first, picturing a concert with imaginary shoppers abound. Needless to say I quit - the nights became too creepy. I’m not sure where I was going with this..adios crossroads mall and god bless Allan Holdsworth

@SDPickups7 жыл бұрын
I did the artwork for Mark for the MVP albums and his subscription guitar audio magazine back then. Frank Gambale was a great player, still is. Alot of great music went down in that era. Unfortunately his brother Mike Varney is the one who made decent money, practically inventing the shred guitar record company. The music still seems pretty fresh even now, its nice to see people appreciate these incredible talents.

This was Mark Varney's supplied artwork, honestly I didn't think it related to the music at all, but I was told to use it. Its not particularly good and doesn't represent the quality of the music in the CD. The goal of good graphic design and art direction is to grab the attention of a possible record buyer. You have literally 2 seconds to get a message into their brain so they will even look at the CD. This one just kinda screams "Walmart $1 CD bargain bin." I had alot of the same arguments with his brother Mike. If the music is of such high extreme quality as this album was, the cover needs to reflect that, with high quality imaging conceptualizing. I'd say maybe 30% of the work I did for Shrapnel is work I'd be proud to show, the rest were ideas I disagreed with, but did the best I could under the circumstances. Not that this is unusual, most of my career was battles to give the customer something better than they could possibly imagine themselves, but they pay the bills and if they insist you do a bad idea, you do it or don't get paid.
@thesphericalguy90187 жыл бұрын
Sounds frustrating! I agree that it looks kinda dull and doesn't really hint to how awesome this album is. The tesseract is kinda cool though, perhaps that could have worked on it's own? Or maybe not, I'm really not a designer haha. Anyways thanks for a nice story.

First off, I was a Hendrix fan. Then I discovered McLaughlin. (as Jimi did) Then I heard Allan...in a bar in San Diego live for the first time in 78'. So Dimeola, McLaughlin, Goodsall, Holdsworth, et al, were my main men until 87', when Frank swept his way into my brain. His playing attacked my senses like Allan did, as I'd never heard anyone sweep. To hear them together is to view two distinct art forms on the same canvas. One bullets...the other...butter. Many simply box Allan into the "legato" jail and end it there. No. Nyet. Nein. You can't listen to "Sand"....or "The Unmerry Go Round" and just say "legato". But never mind my paltry two cents~ just read what the greatest guitarists of our lifetime say about Allan, and that includes Frank. RIP my friend, the world was a better place with you in it.

@@ShivaKumar-gs7nb Scott, like most great guitarists who do have amazing musical phrasing, knows that Holdsworth was the only guitarist to reach the peak he did, of impossibly great playing in every aspect, with beautiful phrasing the most important ingredient, but also obviously, mastery of subtle expressions of slight to dramatically wide pitch variations adding a rich dimension to the music, uncanny timing, fat butter smooth tone, wide intervallic lines in contrast to lots of chromatic passing tones a few seconds prior or after, and everything else that goes into being the greatest player. Holdsworth was the only person that had that genius combination of ideas and the skills to put them across that we were incredibly lucky to see. Great stuff. Love Frank’s sound instantly recognizable. Allan too, of course. That’s the kinda fusion I can actually listen too. Very cool. 🎸

increíble trabajo, que pena que no colaboraron más, hubiera estado genial escuchar más material conjunto de ambos genios de la guitarra
