My uncle told me this song was a big hit with the soldiers in Vietnam.I get the feeling that young people today don't understand how all-encompassing the Vietnam War was, and the degree to which it influenced the music.

"The changing of sunlight to moonlight"...The lead singer here looks back on his life...all the sorrows, and as you said Angela, he mourns his loss of innocence longing for a simpler, the safer, the more shielded life he knew as a child.

To soldiers in Vietnam this song has and had a special meaning that I don't think many others could understand. Feeling the loss of friends there and the loss of the life and loves of those so far away was sometimes heartrending. Such a great song, but boy it could almost break you.

This song describes growing up in the 60's. It started out innocent, then Kennedy was killed. The country was morning, and the out of nowhere a little band out of Liverpool England, brought life and hope. Then flower power and by the time of this song, the 60's felt tired. This is what this song says to me. I fent safe as a child during this time, and I want to go back.

Take me back. This song does that. It takes me to a time and place in my life, a magical time and a tragic time, a decisive time for a lot of people, a choice between love and war was forced upon us. It seems like peace and love did not win out, but we have to believe that things will get better. This is a milestone song, for sure.

Let this 74 yr old Vietnam Vet set things straight. NO!!!! This song is NOT about Vietnam. It's about the progression of life in general and thinking back upon and longing to go back to the simpler times of one's life. This song does hold a lot of meaning to us Vietnam Vets because of how accurate the lyrics depicted how we thought and felt. One moment you're a "carefree" high schooler thinking life is soooo hard (having to study, do chores, parents telling you what to do, etc.) and next you are in Nam trying to stay alive and realizing that being a kid was A LOT easier and carefree and wanting to go back to those times. As I said, it's not just about Vietnam, but life in general.... It is even more appropriate for someone my age. I see how screwed up things are now and long to be back in the 50's & 60's. (It was far from perfect but a LOT better than the way things are now).

I first heard this song when I was 14, and it has had a sobering effect on me ever since. Given all the tragedies Earth and life on Earth has afforded us, heartache, disease, poverty, earthquake, violent storms, murder and the list goes on...surely there was a better situation we have come from....hence the lead singer here, Dean Ford, sings "Take me back to my old home."

It works perfectly in the Vietnam Veteran video on KZbin. The "singer" is in a state of melancholia and seeking to escape it.

Angela, I'm surprised that you weren't moved by the music (the dramatic sounding of the horns and the soothing strings in appropriate parts of the song)...I think it is wonderful that this song finally came to your attention...but I really thought it would make you emotional, especially to hear the anguish in his voice near the end of the song...that desperation to be in a better place.

Contains the famous reverse lead guitar break. The guitar solo in "Reflections of My Life", often referred to as "reverse" guitar solo, was a sixteen bar (measure) sequence featured in the recording by Junior Campbell, the band's lead guitarist. The song is in the key of G major and the solo was recorded thus: The first 4 bars were recorded as normal, with Campbell playing a long “G” note, tied over from the last beat of bar 3, through bar 4, with slight feedback sustaining the long note. The eight track tape was then turned over, and Campbell played against the reverse sound of the track, including his initial first four bars ensuring that he played another long “G” near the same point which could be cross-faded against the original - the tape was then turned over to normal setup, and he selected just 4 bars from the reverse recording which are bars 4-7 inclusive - this was cross-faded with the original at bar 4 - he then picked up from bar 8 through to bar 16 as normal, so in fact, only 4 bars are actually “reversed”. The solo was played on his left-handed Gibson Stereo ES355 using a Sound City stack.

The song has nothing to do with Vietnam. It’s about all the changes over time in someone’s life. It was adopted by soldiers in Vietnam as they thought of home.

I think many soldiers did adopt this song as an anthem after hearing it , but I doubt very seriously that it was written with the War in mind. The Marmalade was a Scottish band I believe, and wrote this about life in general being unkind and the world being, even physically, a dangerous and terrible place to live....love being the thing that we want to find and live for.

One hit wonder, in 1970 in the USA. they reminded me of a combination Beatles and BeeGees. Yes, "the world is a bad place, a terrible place to live..." so what are we supposed to do, move to Mars? of course some people are already on Mars without ever leaving Earth...

No they are from Scotland, theyate not British. This is about the Vietnam War. Listen to the words. I was 15 when this song came out and I am and was a music junky. My album collection is arond 500 album's. I stopped collecting album's in mid 80s because the music industry changed. Now forget about it so few good artists its all about them making $ computerized music and voice auto tune. I don't think music will ever be like it was back then. Artists did it for the love of music not $$'s.

I think you'll find that Scotland, although a country in it's own right, is also in 'Great Britain'! This isn't really the place for raging nationalism, is it?!?! 🤔 Btw, this song is so much NOT about Vietnam!! A scottish band would have no reason to write a song about someone else's political problems. It just happened to strike a chord with those who were caught up in 'Vietnam' back then, & the lyrics seemed to fit.
