That reminds me of a weird dream I once had, where I bought a Dacia, opened up the hood, and it had an F1 engine in it. I got chased by the cops after that, because apparently the engine was stolen or something, but I didn’t want to give the car up because it could talk through telepathy. It was pretty weird.

I'm so happy Honda turned it around and got their glory. Seeing it battle the big bad Merc in 21 was amazing. Such a shame McLaren couldn't get it sorted though. Only question is haven't Honda let a load of engineers go to RBPT? Or is RBPT just a badge put on the Honda product and Honda has retained their engineers?

I didn't expect the McLaren Honda partnership to be sooo bad but was surprised at the high expectations. People seemed to forget how Honda had struggled on their previous attempt with BAR and their own team; and that McLaren had only won 1 title since 2000.

McLaren trying to dictate to Honda how small the engine must be to fit in there size zero car concept was the downfall of the project. Red Bull telling Honda to build the best engine they could, let them know how much cooling it requires & they would build the car around it was the correct way to do things.

Realistically looking at it, there may not even be a choice but for this to happen. As it currently stands, Honda may not want to go the full path of developing its own team from scratch again (Wasn't exactly steller the first time, though there was a win) in addition to building whole new engines for new regs so it'd be far easier to just jump on with a team currently on the grid. Discounting the possible team that ends up on the grid courtesy of that formal registration process, the current choices are slim pickings between: - Williams (Who seem to still be in abit of a fog in terms of direction, though its been revealed that Capito's exit was of his own planning because retirement and not the impatient Decision of an Exec or shareholder) - Mclaren (While still not quite in championship form and certainly not the Mclaren Mercedes 2.0 that for some reason people really expected, are much further along as a team overall and far better at addressing their own faults (Something that was never gonna happen with Ron Denis at the helm and the Eyebrow king being around). Just going off that as well as race results (An equation we certainly can remove the engine from given they are both powered with Mercedes engines), Mclaren would honestly be the ONLY viable option. Now sure I guarantee that such a disastrous partnership won't be easily forgotten but at the same time, new people in charge can mean starting from scratch and simply looking at as how not to operate a successful partnership.

The Honda of now is not the Honda of 2015-17, nor even the Honda of the '00s. I admit I thought the opposite with Red Bull, that *that* arrangement would be a disaster because of what had just happened with McLaren. And I'm happily removing egg from face on that one. Many of the names at the top of the McLaren organisation the last time either have been ejected or are no longer with us. Hubris is hopefully not steering the orange-but-don't-call-it-orange ship this time, as it was last time when Ron's ego was still in charge. What is the same, though, is a boardroom that doesn't appear to get on with Mercedes. I hope they haven't gotten carried away with having hit the ground running in Formula E with... er, Renault power? Nissan power? Ren-an? Niss-ault?

you could already see during that one year with toro rosso, that honda made great progress. red bull and toro rosso actually worked together with honda and they had a great relationship unlike mclaren honda. they even took engine penalties just to test out new parts to have a very competitive engine in 2019. And we saw how that played out in 2021 and 2022. honda made a almighty comeback.

Rabid lifelong McLaren fan here. I really have a soft spot for Honda for the good old days, but I'm not inclined to support this partnership, to be honest. Honda has been far too finicky with F1: they're in, they're out, they're in, they're out... and so on. I would really like to see McLaren focus on getting that full size wind tunnel up and running and close the gap to Mercedes. The engine is not the limitation on the car at the moment and neither are the drivers, Lando being as fast as Russell IMHO. Instead, all weaknesses point at the aero/chassis.

I think both McLaren (now the best midfield/customer structure on the grid rather than a sinking ship in need of a rebuild) and Honda (now a winning supplier rather than a returning brand) are different that who they were ten years ago. So tbh, I think they could perfectly satisfy each other's needs; not to talk about McLaren needing to do something to retain Lando Norris before he decides to go somewhere else to fight for a title (Audi, Mercedes).

I think the list of suppliers at 3:55 has Red Bull listed twice and is missing Renault/Alpine. WIth a seemingly firm limit of 10 teams, they really don't need six engines. Five manufacturer and five customer teams would do nicely. No room for Honda, but someone has to take Renault as a customer, and Mercedes needs to shed a couple. and Audi, who knows?

1986 was the year we really needed "Drive to survive". Just as when Mercedes's domination made F1 so predictable McLaren's reduced it to a discussion of which McLaren would win. But with no real interest from the media in the also-rans, it was hard to find out what was happening behind the front row. I did read one magazine article that spoke of how the purist got an entertaining competition for the minors. When I read that I thought so why is no one reporting on it? That may have been the thought process for the creators of Drive to survive.

Wasn’t it Zak Brown who canned the Honda deal in 2017? The Amazon series on McLaren that wasn’t seemed to suggest so. The atmosphere at McLaren being different today than in 2017 would be the key to Honda returning. "Modern day versions of Senna & Prost but without the success" surely if you are comparing Honda joining with McLaren in both eras, Alonso and Button were actually more successful at that point in their careers with more championships than the Senna/Prost pairing and more wins for both drivers. Key part here is 2026. The current deal Honda has with Red Bull lasts until 2025, the last year of the current engine regs. The new ones begin in 2026, which is when Red Bull will start producing their own engines with supposed Hybrid assistance (and badging) from Ford.
@caphowdy666
@caphowdy666 Жыл бұрын
@@RACECAR But all indications were they were still going to use the Honda IP they obtained and base their new engine off of the one they are using now. Surely if Honda comes in as an engine supplier RBPT would no longer have access to that technology and would have to start their engine development from scratch. As far as I understand it, any engine manufacturers that already are in F1 would still be working off the base engines they have now, but modified rather than building a brand new engine from scratch. Basically an evolution of the current tech with the removal of the MGU-H and increase of the ERS power output.

The speed of the RB down a straight is due to very efficient aero, and the poor straight line performance of the Mercedes powered cars early on was due to very inefficient aero. @@beany1987 it’s very negligible pace differences, the car’s aero efficiency is the biggest factor, but it’s a really good engine yes. Though it’s deffo not why lando signed the contract. McLaren is the only (potential) top team he will be no.1 driver at, plus it has a very wholesome environment. Ferrari have major political issues, with them prioritising Leclerc. Mercedes have George as their no.1 driver and RB focus on Max so much they actually impact the drivability of the car for their no.2 driver, RB also has culture issues. Pfft, so McLaren could refuse to listen to anything Honda recommends all over again? Not likely, BUT seeing as Honda were supposed to pull out of F1, Max and Red Bull winning the driver's title really shook things up and Honda seemed far less certain about leaving F1 for good. Staying on to support Red Bull with the engine development... and now it seems like they are actually going to stay as an engine supplier and not just technical support for Red Bull's Honda derivative engine? Leaving just as all the hard work has finally paid off and Honda struck gold was rather silly. Leaving as the team finally broke the strangle hold Mercedes has had since 2014 was STOOOOOOOPID. If McLaren had been as accommodating and have as much patience with Honda as Red Bull/Toro Rosso did/do, and if they had designed the car around the engine (the CORRECT WAY) and not force Honda to design the engine to fit into the car, then refuse to make any changes that would change that idiotic "size Zero" concept ( and the car had a severe self image problem because McLaren was forcing the car to be thin, and would look at and comment on the other cars in the field asking why they could not be more like them. The car's self esteem was so low, it constantly committed suicide and when it did not, it had no motivation to be fast. It was only made worse with Fernando Alonso's constant bullying with comments like "GP2 ENGINE!" Without Alonso at McLaren though, perhaps the next attempt would be far less abusive of a relationship? 🤣🤣🤣 God, I am rambling as I have not been to sleep in 3 days.....

You're suffering from past-speak as well. Under Brown not everything goes smoothly, but they restructured a lot. With Seidl they introduced a healthy environment, from what I've understood. It's not the days of Ron Dennis anymore.

I'd rather see Honda walk away from F1 if they can't find a team to partner with then team up with McLaren again.

After the way Mclaren talked down honda and said they had "best chassis" on grid , why would honda want to come back? I.m.o. Mclaren was so egotistical and had horrible car yet blamed honda for everything. Even had to PAY to leave honda. So if they rejoin itll be crazy
