Ummm. He’s the James Brown of indie rock get over it. The precedent was set with at the drive in. What did you expect? Also-when I saw them on this tour he danced his ass off and nailed the vocals. In fact.... in the 12 times I saw ATDI it TMV or Antemasque even, Cedric was fantastic. When you’re in the middle of the crowd losing your mind believe me. You wouldn’t care. There’s an energy to Omar and Cedric’s live performances that you just can’t quite capture unless you’re there. Too bad they’re old and fat now-you missed out big time.
@cthncthn7405
@cthncthn7405 4 жыл бұрын
Get over it? What did I expect? I expected nothing. They are their own artistic entity free to make whatever choices they want. I would not ask them to do otherwise. My hope was that the live shows would sound something like the album. The only reason I commented was that this was the first video that did exactly that. This made me very happy, to the point that I commented, which I almost never do. Then I find your comment saying I should just get over it. I saw them live back in 2005/2009 and in live videos the vocals were terrible whereas the albums were very polished. I didn’t like their ATDI stuff for the same reason.They have made a few very polished, some would say overproduced, albums with Mars Volta that some people adore in all of their polished perfection. Not everyone that likes Mars Volta likes ATDI obviously. Are the ones that don’t like ATDI not the real true fans? It must be tough to tour after putting out a very produced album when you can’t pull that sound off live. I’ve been an aspiring musician/songwriter for 30 years so that is something I am aware of. Well that is my opinion that they aren’t the best live, and some agree. Some don’t. You said you have heard them live where it was perfect so ok maybe the 2 shows I saw and all the live videos I have seen over the last 15 years were subpar performances and I just missed the shows you saw. Or maybe we just have different tastes in aspects of music. Over the years I was an avid live video Mars Volta searcher and always disappointed. Yes they obviously have an indie style.... I would call it punk myself, not indie. Whatever, tomato, tomahto. Call it Indie/punk ethic, call it whatever you want. Some people get off on that unpolished sound and that’s fine, I don’t think those people need to get over their preferred taste in art. It’s too dirty for me. I like my dirty to even be polished, like In Utero. I respect everyone’s right to let their boner grow for whatever naturally turns them on... “Their name isn’t Mars Volta, it’s THE Mars Volta”. Yeah I know, you’ll never get me to change what I call ‘em.

Everything about this is amazing... Especially the way obelisk leads into Cicatriz... Obelisk itself is the Cassandra Gemini epic I always wanted from Deloused... And that fucking intro... I'm sitting here drunk screaming along with it because I can't help it. Something about the way he screams just says something to me that I can't explain its beyond words but I feel it. You can ignore my drunken ramblings but fucking thank you mojobear for posting. I needed this for sure.

Chris Bess great comment. Btw, is Obelisk the Cygnus vismund Cygnus jam that starts at 13:15? If yes , that’s one of the best things I’ve ever heard . Also I’ve noticed a bit of a CAN influence in Cedric’s singing right at the beginning of it . Haunting Peking O style of ghostly vocals

+Alex Fostes naw dude obelisk is its own 35minute jam at 41:06. It's fucking amazing but it's feels like an interlude that never made its way into the album but it leads perfectly into the fucking amaaaaaaaazzzzinnggg screaming intro of Cicatriz, which in itself is like a 30 minute jam. I treat it like one big hour long song with multiple movements and pieces. It's my favorite piece of music ever I think, just fucking raw and gives me chills.

There’s absolutely some parts from Obelisk that evolved into Cassandra Gemini, although I kind of wish it’d stayed close to this. Ikey (RIP) comes through a lot more clearly with this mix.

this is perhaps a portrait of the Deloused we would of gotten if Omar had full control over the mix during recording. The guitar is sonically richer stands slightly higher above the vocal, meanwhile Cedric’s vocals are ominous here they sound darker and buried which fits the albums story line. Also these jam sessions are so much more elaborate and so thought out I can’t imagine how frustrating it must of been for the band to consolidate such amazing music down to fit a more main stream platform.

By Bedlam he was gettin up there into his mid 30s. After years of yelling his throat out with at the drive in, its amazing we still got those first 3 powerhouse volta performances. I feel around Bedlam is when he really started watching out for his voice- drinking tea constantly throughout shows and overall just putting less push in the belts. I also think he smoked when he was younger so that can play into it. I agree deloused to amp were the best ones, but even noctourniquet has some pretty impressive vox.

@@Shiloh7377 Amazing, here's the quote from Cedric. Blake is the father of most of The Mars Volta songs. He's the one that came up with a lot of beats for us. Even on Frances the Mute, "L'Via L'Viaquez" and certain parts [of the songs on the album], Blake Fleming beats [were taught to] Jon Theodore. Sometimes [we'd have] to not let Jon know that they were Blake's beats, because he'd have a bit of a problem with that, since Blake was our first drummer and tracks like "Cicatriz ESP" and "Roulette Dares (The Haunt Of)" were Blake Fleming beats.
