@@vanleeuwenhoek I knew every Marshall Tucker Band member but the Caldwell's. I owned the Whippin Post in Tampa, Fl. The Outlaws got their start there. I was with them in Clearwater at Peaches Tapes n Records, with 97 Rock Radio jocks, to kick off their first album. Some great kick ass music came out of those Southern Rock bands. I recall in July 76' Gator Bowl, Jax, Fl. Skynyrd the headliner, didn't show. Doug Gray came to the mic, broke the news to the crowd, then they, and Charlie Daniels and Dickie Betts blew everyone chit away. Earlier, 38 Special opened, it was their debut concert appearance. Good times, now great memories. I took Sue Bently, dynamite blond, we had a king sized bed at the Purple Jester. I didn't spend the night alone, at least not that night.

Southern Rock my friend, not Country rock. The Allman Brothers were pioneers,Lynyrd Skynyrd, these guys, 38 Special and many many others. A genre of Rock that's over looked today. And yes it is more Country that most current country music which is almost Pop music.

Sam, there is music to match your old soul. check out Stephen Wilson, Jr. Anders Osborne (Personal Fav), Eric Lindell, Sturgill, and another gem, Dylan Earle. Find his remake on youtube of Blaze Foley, "If i could only fly". Hope some of these suggestions find you some new musical paths to follow. oh one more, i would always revert back to Robert Earl Keen. might be a little too much Texas Country, but he is the Poet of Texas.

Took my fam'ly away from my Carolina home Had dreams about the West and started to roam Six long months on a dust covered trail They say heaven's at the end but so far it's been hell And there's fire on the mountain, lightnin' in the air Gold in them hills and it's waitin' for me there We were diggin' and siftin' from five to five Sellin' everything we found just to stay alive Gold flowed free like the whiskey in the bars Sinnin' was the big thing, lord and Satan was his star And there's fire on the mountain, lightnin' in the air Gold in them hills and it's waitin' for me there Dance hall girls were the evenin' treat Empty cartridges and blood lined the gutters of the street Men were shot down for the sake of fun Or just to hear the noise of their forty-four guns And there's fire on the mountain, lightnin' in the air Gold in them hills and it's waitin' for me there Now my widow she weeps by my grave Tears flow free for her man she couldn't save Shot down in cold blood by a gun that carried fame All for a useless and no good worthless claim And there's fire on the mountain, lightnin' in the air Gold in them hills and it's waitin' for me there Fire on the mountain, lightnin' in the air Gold in them hills and it's waitin' for me there Waitin' for me there

One of the top 10 concerts I saw in LA during the 70’s. I remember it like it was yesterday - 1975 Starlight Amphitheater in the hills above beautiful Burbank, CA. We actually were allowed to bring in ice chests. I was a sophomore and a good friend brought a case of iced Michelob in - he adored that beer (bottles only of course). I smuggled in a couple joints in my socks and we had a ball. I remember Doug Gray saying well into the show - “ If you don’t throw any bottles, we’ll keep playin’”. No one did if course and they were a tremendously tight band. I bought a bunch more of their albums after that show. Back then albums were about $3.50. that was a lot of money when you made two bucks an hour.. Toy Caldwell plays amazing fast with a great finger picking tone.

The biggest concert I saw them was at The Superdome in the summer of 1975 🕺 There was something like 93,000 people in attendance. It was the first concert at the Superdome, a bunch of Southern Rock bands played. The "Physic" Jean Dixion predicted that the roof cave in because of the loud music & noise from the crowd. The roof didn't cave in 😎 But we raised it with all the Great Music played that day ✌️
