Andy Weir, who wrote the original novel, researched the hell out of the subject of what could happen. He started out posting a chapter at a time in a blog format, and pretty soon, he had a publishing contract to publish the book, and then it also had a bidding war for film rights. Just about everything in the book is based on science as we understand it and accurate. The one big flaw that I know of is the weather on Mars. There is a very thin atmosphere, so no debris can kick up enough force to make the abort necessary. You would get a bad dust storm, but nothing like that, as only the lightest dust particles would kick up. If you watch The Expanse or read the novels it is based on by James S.A. Corey, the events of The Martian are canon in that universe. There is a ship called the Mark Watney. The Expanse takes place hundreds of years in the future in our colonized solar system.
@StevesTubesКүн бұрын
There was another science issue in the movie. The whole Iron Man scene. There would not have been anywhere near the thrust shown from a suit breach. That much mass could have a very gradual acceleration, but only if there was a large enough supply of air available. To be fair, in the book Watney only jokes about going Iron Man. He doesn't actually do it.
@MagsonDareКүн бұрын
@@StevesTubes In the book he suggested it and everyone else just went "No, that's dumb!" so he didn't do it. The book also pointed out that when he got reeled in to the ship that if it was a movie that everyone would be there to greet him at the airlock, but since it wasn't a movie they were all at their workstations like they should be -- so of course in the actual movie they're all there to greet him ;-) Andy Weir also mentioned in another panel I saw that he handwaved away the need for radiation shielding.
@lefear26 сағат бұрын
There is another big flaw, but to be fair to Andy Weir the information about it wasn't available at that time. It's the fact that the Martian soil has too much perchlorates in it for plants to grow. Although, if the information about the perchlorates was available while Weir was writing the book he'd find a way for Watney to neutralize the soil too.

It's so impressive how both Mark and his crew managed to keep their sense of humor throughout all that. It's probably one of the things that made this movie so unique. You fully expect them to delve into the whole "depression/suicidal" concept, being alone on Mars with low chances of survival. Watching Mark MacGyver his way for a year and a half was incredibly impressive, all the little achievements like creating water, the first successful crop, managing to communicate with NASA. The most emotional moments were by far Mark's first communication with NASA, talking with his crew for the first time, his crew finally rescuing him. This movie and Interstellar did wonders for the whole "space travel/sci-fi" genres, they are outstanding from all perspectives - dialogue, acting, directing etc. You're right, Magy, the shots from "Mars" are visually stunning, every single time you see Mark go out, the vastness of the space observable from his perspective, it really humbles us as a species but at the same time, it's impossible not to feel a bit of pride - we reached this point and we will only continue to grow as a species, strive for the stars. Thank you for such an emotional and captivating reaction, commentary, discussion, you did great ❤

The science in Andy Weir's book is pretty solid, though one exception is the idea that a Martian storm could tip over something as obviously massive as the MAV. The Martian atmosphere is so thin (which is why the "launch Watney into space under a tarp" is viable) the speed of the wind would have to be many hundreds of miles (or more kilometers) per hour (and of course, if that were true, there's no way they could send the MAV years in advance). They did a pretty good job converting the book to the movie, with (IMO) one major exception: the whole "iron man" thing. That makes me cringe every time. I mean, they have an MMU (Manned Maneuvering Unit) designed for an astronaut to move about in space!

1:48 No, there really aren't any storms on Mars. The Mars atmosphere is very thin. There can't be big storms when there is very little atmosphere to create any pressure and blow anything around. The most recent NASA Mars rover actually had a little helicopter, but the rotor needed to spin much faster than it would need to on Earth in order to fly because of Mars' thin atmosphere. It's one of the few scientific inaccuracies in the book and the movie, but they needed to create an inciting reason to strand Mark there.

Mars literally gets recurring storms that last for weeks and cover huge parts of the planet. The air just doesn't carry enough force to do the kind of damage they showed here.

23:12 "You can't eat potatoes without ketchup." "I can." Well, I mean, to be completely honest, so can I, but it's such a _drag._ Potatoes with no _ketchup?_ It's just so automatic. You go to a fast-food restaurant and order fries or hash browns, you make it a point to pick up _ketchup,_ because without the ketchup, the fries and hash browns are just not _complete._ It's like whipped topping that hasn't been _sweetened._ Now, if you think that's hard to imagine, there's probably a _reason_ for that.

The only thing that’s scientifically inaccurate about this movie is that there isn’t supposed to be any storms on Mars, the atmosphere and wind isn’t strong enough to create such things Edit: could you watch interstellar? It’s similar to this movie but it’s done by Christopher Nolan and Hans zimmer Edit 2: 1 sol is 1.02 earth days, 24hrs 39mins. Edit 3: Donald glover’s character slipping onto the floor wasn’t scripted

The atmospheric pressure is so low that fast winds like that would feel like a stiff breeze, and not be able to do the damage that was shown in the movie. As you said other than that this movie is great with science!
@user-mg5mv2tn8qКүн бұрын
Yes, winds really can occasionally get up to 300 mph on Mars, but because of the thin air, a 300 mph wind has the pushing power of a 25 mph wind on Earth. It won't tip over a spaceship, but it could knock down the patio chairs.

Plothole in the movie: growing potatoes on Mars. That is impossible. The soil on Mars is infertile. In the book, they brought a certain amount of Earth soil to Mars. When the airlock blows up, it makes sense why he could not repeat everything with the now also infertile Earth soil. In the movie he could have just restarted the botany programme. He still had all the tools. NO IDEA why they omitted this little detail from the movie. It would have been 1 sentence to explain that they had brought Earth soil. Secondly, the iron man bullshit was not in the book.

The original book was inspired by the Apollo 13 scene where they needed to fit a square CO2 filter in a hole for a round CO2 filter. I highly recommend you the book. There are even more things that went wrong. The storm that kick-started the story is scientifically wrong: the air on Mars is so thin, it could not push the rocket. First you had to be around when Pathfinder landed there. I watched the whole thing on TV. I got the audiobook for my daily commute a year before the movie came out. First Mars' atmosphere is abt 1% the density of Earth's so storms like shown don't exist. Your average Fart is more powerful than any wind on Mars. Anyway the book has way more than the movie plus a lot more humor in it. Spoiler Alert! In the book Mark does not do the iron Man thing. Martinez went and got him out of the MAV and brought him back. I still liked the movie but the book has a lot more in it. Mark - "Yes, of course duct tape works anywhere. Duct tape is magic and should be worshiped."

The storm in the beginning of the movie is the only aspect of this that’s entirely inaccurate. There is so little atmosphere on Mars, it wouldn’t even blow a flag around, let alone tip a multi-ton spacecraft or launch a satellite dish. Of course, if that were accurate, I guess we wouldn’t have a story. The rest is all fairly on point given what scientists knew about Mars at the time.
