I must confess that when death strikes someone, one begins to rest in peace, regardless of the place where the person died. However, I am fortunate or lucky to capture this fine music on KZbin. Free [AM and FM] radio would not play it anymore, except to hear whisps of it in a commercial. This fine music is my speed, and no new stuff could replace it from me.

Yes indeed, and also to the other half of his back beat none other than incredible drummer William Benny "Papa Zita" Benjamin Jr. Not to take anything away from the other incredible Funk Brothers musicians, but those two were the very foundation and back beat of the Motown Sound. It's kind of ironic to me how both passed at similar ages after similar professional and personal challenges.

Smokey was so pleased with what Wanda was giving his songs. There was never a plan to replace Gladys with Wanda as lead singer. Many people on the label have told me that. It just happened at the time that what Wanda was recording just stood out more; in time Gladys would be singing leads on singles again. Or as Martha said, "They just wanted to give someone else a chance." Unfortunately, neither Gladys nor Wanda could handle the situation comfortably but, then again, who could?

The marvelettes choreography, like that of most of the early Motown acts, was designed by the legendary cholly Atkins, who was on staff in Detroit as the label’s chief stage choreographer. He designed steps for the Supremes, temptations, Smokey Robinson and the miracles, Gladys knight and the Pips, and the Jackson 5, among many others. Even after Motown let Atkins go when the company made the move from Detroit to Hollywood, some of the acts, including the Spinners, during their Atlantic Records years, independently commissioned Cholly to create their steps.
