This is why Antonio Banderas was so endearing in this movie. We saw him go from absolute bum, self-defeated loser to maturing into a worthy hero but also as a self-respecting man who took responsibilities for his actions. That sort of struggle is so relatable, no matter your age or culture. We so cruely need this sort of relatable difficulties in modern heroes. Also, it acknowledges that the master knows better than you and him sharing his knowledge and wisdom is actually a necessary humbling experience, no matter if it makes your hero looks vulnerable in the moment. There is no pay off at the end of the journey if your hero is a badass all the time; it feels so forced and obnoxious.

These movies taught boys to be men and men to have honour and courage. Now movies like these are written in 2020s by women and Gen Z men to fit the social agenda, making male and female heroes constantly question themselves and need encouragement, while simultaneously emasculating their older male characters because "who needs them/it's all their fault".

I used to do a martial art, Aikido, where you get thrown A LOT. So the first 30 minutes of every 2 hour session was practicing break falls. This so ingrained it into you that 10 years later I was in a motorbike accident where I broke my pelvis against the fuel tank, got flicked up into the air high enough to go over the corner of a van and, when coming down headfirst, turned the fall into a roll. Not a mark on the crash helmet and back wasn't even bruised. Sadly joints are not made to take that sort of strain so it did break the wrist and opposite knee but i'll take that over a broken back or neck and probable life in a wheelchair.

2:30 best shows the core of Don Diego’s cunning: his ability to read people. He knew that Alejandro was going to attack him after the second lash of the whip (knowing the extent of Alejandro’s temper), thus he quickly puts the whip aside and begins to unsheathe his sword before Alejandro begins to rush at him. @azraelknightquest57542 жыл бұрын
As a kid, I remember watching a portly Anthony Hopkins do AMAZING work in movies prior to this. And when I watched this movie, I had to say that even though Anthony didn't have abs, pecs or big biceps, I was still impressed with his slimming down and improved movement in this role. He clearly had done SOME kind of dieting and exercising. Also, just for fun, this is how I see the lessons: #1: The circle. Focus and control. Prepare well before you engage anything. Zorro is a man of intense focus that controls the battlefield be it a tight room, tight hallway, wide space, backalleys of the town, countryside or the city streets on market day. He is also a man that often appears with a devised plan to country anything, from infiltration to sabotage, to espionage to hostage rescue, etc. #2: Swordplay, balance attack and defense. Zorro is considered an expert swordsman, therefore whatever his preference, he must be proficient in both, able to adjust his fighting style accordingly to his adversary. Spaniards were INFAMOUS for their excellent Toledo steel blades and nimble swordsmanship. Even among them, Zorro stood out. Knowing both attack and defense, combinations, set-ups, counter-attacks is critical and a must. The sword is also the primary weapon of the time, so it's just common sense. The exact "style" of Zorro has been debated, some insisting strictly and only traditional Spanish-styles, others insisting French rapier or Italian swordplay influence... I'd like to think he studied every style he could and used whatever worked best for the situation/opponent. #3: Rope Drills: Exercises to make you fast and agile, increase your reflexes, with a moderate amount of increase to the legs strength and stamina and a touch in arm strength, which aids in climbing, jumping and running. Critical for Zorro, known to do acrobatic feats to disrupt and divide superior numbers. This often gave him the ability to deal with brawling thugs and overly aggressive cutthroats. It also gave him the ability to use the terrain in operations, actions and duels to grant him an incredible edge against even the most ridiculous odds. #4: Push Ups "til You can't push no more: Major upper body strength and stamina. Increases the power of your sword strikes and sword blocks and punching if needed. He is preparing him to be conditioned so his sword strikes and blocks aren't slow and exhausted even if he's been fighting, sleep-deprived, starved, overheated, etc. Zorro doesn't get tired and he knows his technique will last only as long as his stamina does. Technique, timing and strategy are more important than strength or speed but he knows they are excellent additions. Conditioning is critical. #5: Getting Whipped: Maintain your calm even during intense stress (such as high pain or anger) so you can think and strategize properly, especially during situations when you might be wounded or having to fight during extremely emotional moments such as personal agendas, witnesses horrifying acts recently, getting wounded, etc. Zorro cannot ever forget where he is, what the situation/problems/dangers are, he can't afford to get sloppy or stupid (as we get when emotional), he has to always focus. His life and often others depend on that. #6: "To Get To Lesson #2": Patience. So that you are thorough in what you do, especially in preparation, no skipping steps or half measures. Needed for planning, stealth, etc. Zorro does not blindly rush in to things, he patiently picks the right time, the right place and the right actions accordingly. When he devises a plan or strategy, he is THOROUGH. He cannot afford too many mistakes. Don Diego was preparing for a replacement since the beginning.

This scene really encompasses the master and apprentice relationship down to a T. Both actors are magnificent in this masterpiece of an action movie, a classic in the late 90’s still amazes audiences who seen in theaters/now. Also, Anthony doesn’t need to be too muscular in order to wield the sword, he wielded it with grace. Not only that, but this gives so much Qui-Gon Jinn/Obi wan vibes from this as well. In reality, that's how you kill a student, or yourself. A master swordsman fears an idiot with a sword more than another master swordsman. A master will quickly recognize it when you are in a tactically advantageous position, and he will not attack. The idiot will come charging with his sword, skewering both himself and you. Even an unsharpened sword can skewer. Training swords tend to be floppy and have a large ball at the point. These were not training swords.

Love that movie. It must have taken a lot of work in learning all those fencing moves. They both were excellent!

Zorro was the pinnacle of everyone's career in this movie: Antonio Banderas, Anthony Hopkins, Catherine Zeta Jones, etc. Everyone worked so very hard, learning, growing, churning together like a powerful but smooth engine! The casting was perfect, the directing was brilliant, the writing was superb! Another reason why Puss in Boots is my favorite Shrek character. ❤

Pinnacle of their work? I like Mask of Zorro but all 3 have done better movies. Banderas- Pain and Glory for which he got an Oscar nod, The Skin I Live In, or Interview with a Vampire. Hopkins- Silence of the Lambs, The Remains of the Day, The Father, Two Popes, Elephant Man, and Amistad. Jones-Chicago, Terminal, Traffic, or Intolerable Cruelty.

This movie is an untouchable masterpiece but i would love to know how long this training took.

A few months. But remember, this isn't a few months where they train for a few hours in between other life stuff. This is a few months of every waking moment being dedicated to training in a highly specific set of skills by one of the greatest masters in the world at those skills.

@VegetaLF7 was this movie taken from a novel or at least a well known story?

EXACTLY. As masterful as Zorro is here, he still had demons to face by the end of the movie, much like Luke did in The Last Jedi. Only Luke doesn't even face Kylo, but rather plays parlor tricks. That always left so much to be desired with Luke's death whereas Zorro's was satisfying and felt earned.

How Anthony Hopkins goes from portraying a convincing cannibalistic serial killer to an enigmatic figure like Zorro will never cease to amaze me. Such a fantastic actor.

Well, they were taught by both Olympic gold medalist and fencer Bob Anderson. Antonio Banderas also spent four months with the fencers of the Spanish national team.

Batman was inspired by Zorro. Both in the comics and real life. Zorro came before Batman. The mark of Zorro was the movie Young Bruce Wayne watched the night his parents got shot.
