it is NKVD. Master was took away by a false denunciation from his “friend” Aloisy Mogarych, who simply wanted to get Master’s apartment. people being taken away and disappearing was not a rare occurrence in the 1930s (same thing happened to my great granddad). this decade is famous for Stalin’s repressions, when a person could be sent in a GULAG for something as simple as a political anecdote or even wrapping a fish in a newspaper with Stalin’s portrait.
