Pynchon is a true creative genius ! All we need to do is give him the credit for it all. Such a beautiful mind he is !....

Pynchon’s V (my middle initial) met UES Manhattan (where I also lived) met “Inherent Vice” Mikey Wolfmann aka Roland Arnall (The Monster) never met L Ron Hubbard The Master of Scibots.

Looking forward to watching this. Truthfully, I think the film of PTA's filmography that least captures the Pynchonian tone is (ironically) his straightforward Pynchon adaptation, Inherent Vice. So much of that sensibility, absurdism, and perspective on history is present across all his films.

Funny you should say that, I have the same exact thought, I feel the Master is his most Pynchonian film.

Great video! Profane's navy past instantly reminds me that film. The connection between PTA and Pynchon is right there and in other movies too. Thank You and greetings from Uruguay.

Once you see it, it's all over the movie. Especially in the scene where Freddy is on the motorcycle and Dodd calls after him like a pet. And I forget the scene, but there's one where Dodd has to call Freddy back because he is about to attack someone like a dog. Thanks for the kind words and for watching!

apparently pynchon liked the master so much he gave pta his blessing to do inherent vice so i definetly think youre on to something :) and inherent vice might feel less "pynchonian" than the heads would like but i still think its a groovy and underrated film thats very rewarding on multiple viewings... full of discontinuous edits and hilarious throw-away lines worthy of pynchon ... film has a tendency towards realism and coherence of action so that pychons style cant be replicated in a visual narrative ... but pynchon himself praised the film and im excited to see pta try again with vineland ❤ (great essay btw!)

Same, I am beyond excited for PTA's next film. I didn't know Pynchon saw the Master, but I would love to be a fly on the wall during the conversation between him and PTA! Inherent Vice really rubbed me the wrong way when I first saw it, but it has since become a favorite, and while it doesn't capture all of Pynchon, I think it nailed the humor and paranoia. Thanks for Watching!

This makes V sound more fun and less work. I'm tempted to read it or just watch The Master. I wish Paul Thomas Anderson made a Gravity's Rainbow tv series, or that you did a video on Gravity's Rainbow. I'm reading it with Ben McEvoy but lost momentum at the moment.

interesting! thanks for the research. On reading Against the Day, ive s"seen" some glaring and subtle lifting from it for TenneT, Castle in the sky and Phillip Pullmans Dark Materials really lifts a lot from it. I Loved Inherent Vice! ..more of that please and less There will be Blood ^_^

Great video but don’t agree with the conclusion about Freddie at the end. It’s well stated and PTA has also agreed that it’s precisely because Freddie didn’t change at all ultimately that makes The Master a unique and untraditional story. One of PTA’s artist friends even wrote to him saying Freddie at last was where he belonged - Naked, unabashed and fucking like a animal.
@offthewallnovels1292 Жыл бұрын
I like this take. Far be it from me to disagree with PTA about his own film, but I take him repeating the words from processing to the woman as him getting a more sophisticated edge to his animalism, a little narrative to his urges. But it's certainly not proof of anything, he could have just been repeating the words without really appreciating their significance. That said, there isn't a clear colossal change that can be easily pinned down, so his change is just my interpretation. Thanks for watching!
@thegrievancegordieshow9882 Жыл бұрын
The only mistake PTA made was in making Inherent Vice by which he should’ve made a less convoluted The Crying of Lot 49 🎺 staring his wife Mia Rudolph The stories are both conspiratorial-noir but the later is driven by a female lead He probably could only get funding for IVice because of its all star cast
@offthewallnovels1292 Жыл бұрын
Inherent Vice the film really grew on me, but I didn’t like it when I first saw it. Joanna Newsom is one of my favorite artists, but I thought the narration hurt the film by saying outloud what should have been left for the audience to infer. That said, it seems he couldn’t resist having Pynchon’s prose in the film. I’d have loved to see a COL49 adaptation! It might be my favorite Pynchon novel.

Scientology is the perfect Pynchon cult, for reasons that you have touched on in your essay: the vain attempt at overcoming our animal urges, making humanity 'clear'. While The Master is clearly inspired by the life of L Ron, I wonder if Freddie is based upon a real historical character, too? (Perhaps there's an element of Jack W Parsons, the occultist rocket engineer?) Both L Ron, Freddie and Benny Profane managed to survive WWII - perhaps *he's* a reassembled Tyrone Slothrop? It's all connected! 😜
