It is a known fact that both the Janssen Brothers and their best student Jos “Klak” were very moderate inbreeders: they stayed within the tribe but preferably as far away as possible, avoiding heavy inbreeding. Jan Ouwerkerk saw it differently and succeeded in raising the inbreeding of his Janssen pigeons to a fine art. When we talk about “Janssen pigeons” here, we can give the impression that Ouwerkerk had a whole collection of Janssen pigeons. None of it, he only had a handful. It is more correct to say that with surprisingly few basic pigeons he managed to breed the line of the 46 Verbart quite purely with sporting success for at least a quarter of a century.
