For anyone wondering, the technical name for this theory is the "McKelvey-Schofield Chaos Theorem."

I used visual studio code and desmos for the actual math, but I used powerpoint for the animations, which is why some of the transitions are not that smooth. In the future I could try to use proper editing software for these videos to make them better.

It would be interesting to see the results of this exercise for proportional representation! Although exactly what manner of proportional representation and how that is worked out is another hurdle to overcome!

Thanks for the suggestion! I could try running computer simulations of this with proportional representation and see if there are any interesting results. It’s possible that it decreases the intensity of the issue, which could be why this isn’t often mentioned.

Hi great video! Is there any paper that explains the math?

I’m not sure about any actual papers explaining the math for now, but I’ll do more research on it.

what about third party political factors. take india as an example this is just fixing the basic idea

Yeah, that’s true, this model is quite basic and probably doesn’t completely represent the true situation. I didn’t quite understand what you meant by india as an example?

You let your bias show by using trumps image as a bad president. I and many other people with a brain who clearly know who's better between Trump and Biden wouldn't like the video or your channel for this simple fact. I liked your video, just in the future don't show personal biases if you tend to aim to make purely educational content

Sorry about that, it was meant as a joke. I don’t live in the United States, and I don’t have too much interest in American politics. However, I won’t do it in the future.

This is an inaccurate mathematical model. In the case of A and B candidates, it would reason that since they’re both equidistant from the three voters the voters don’t necessarily have a proclivity towards either one of the candidates. Therefore the three voters would have a 50 percent chance of voting for either A or B. This means that on average A is guaranteed two votes and the other three candidates votes are split. This would average 3.5 votes for candidate A and 1.5 votes for candidate B.

It is true that I didn’t consider the probability of the voters still voting for A. In this video, I assumed that these people were 100% rational people who would always vote for whoever is closest to them. Thanks for pointing out the mistake though.

I believe the idea is still relevant though, because there is a proper paper published on this.
