The Maths Prof: Completing the Square

In this lesson I show you an algebraic method for completing the square. It's particularly helpful for those 'EXPRESS' the quadratic in completed square form type of questions. Question 1 is from Cambridge AS Pure Maths 1 9709/12/M/J/21 and question 2 05:15 is from Cambridge AS Pure Maths 1 9709/12/F/M/22.

Pardon my impudence, impertinence and insolence Prof, but I love your pronounciation of the word 'Here'. Makes my ear lobes tingle with delight (but I don't know why!). On St. Patrick's Day last Sunday, I thought I would try imitating your prounounciation of the word 'Here' at my local hostelry, The Queen's Legs, to test if it would help get me served quicker. The pub was packed out and there were two rows of imbibers at the bar and threee ladies saying lewd things about surds. I called out to the barman, a chap I'm convinced who wouldn't know a surd if it bit him on his parabolas, "I say, can I have a drink while I'm waiting to be served 'Here'! The sour and surdless barman called the manager and I was chucked out of the hostelry and barred for life. I overheard one of the ladies laugh, "Ha! I bet he's a surd!" Oh how the three of them laughed! Was I dejected? No. Was I despondent? No. Was I disappointed? A little. Prof, I think you should give maths lessons in hostelries because so many imbibers don't know a surd from a square root and vice versa. I could be your chalk factotum and bag wallah. Anyway, you are delightful Prof. and the timbre of your voice is like golden honey flowing peristaltically along a vinculum of infinite length or longer. We all adore you!

For Exam Q 2, wouldn’t a = -2, as in completed square form, it’s 2(x-2)^2 + 6

@@TheMathsProf the reason i came across you was maths issue and your music makes me bring my energy out and i struggled with maths. Now as an adult its hard due to work, family and other commitment or hardly time. I just get so stresed seeing diff styles and also confused. If its clarified then i can stick to the foundation. Phew!!! I wonder why its called "Foundation " as we start right? 🙈😂
