There's such a wide range of difference in need across the autism spectrum that I get the sense that a separate autism classification may be a disservice. When it comes to educational impact, autism now really seems to just be an interpretation of multiple disabilities which is nuanced to emphasize deficits in social and emotional functioning and differences in cognitive processing. I think that it's actually the multiple disabilities classification which could do with some fine-tuning, and I think splitting it into separate classifications for students with and without cognitive impairment is a very good idea.

I just wish you had made it clear right from the outset that you provide a full range of services not just from a linear perspective, but across the spectrum of need. If doing this right matters, people need to know that.

Be honest. It's good to have expectations for students and support and encourage them in meeting them, but you're also going to adjust your expectations based on what you know for yourself your students can and can't do, and theoretically - hopefully - based on what you know of their prospects for the future.
