This special Independent Institute event was held on May 2, 2019, in San Francisco. Why has the idea of individual sovereignty been granted such primacy of place in free Western societies? Why were the men who formulated the Declaration of Independence willing to declare: “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness," and, further, to insist "That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed."
Why, as well, are ideas of individual sovereignty, which have proved so successful in guaranteeing freedom and prosperity in the West and, increasingly, around the world, under attack, by those on the left and the right who offer collective identity as an alternative?
I'm introduced by Independent President David J. Theroux. My comments are followed by a conversation with Independent Institute Senior Vice President Mary L.G. Theroux and Executive Director Graham Walker.

I went from jobless, drug addicted, fighting with my family, homeless and scrawny to having a beautiful apartment with my pregnant girlfriend while being closer with my family than ever before. I put on 30 pounds of muscle and only smoke a little weed these days. I have a new respect for the gospel, and that’s primarily thanks to the words and works of Jordan Peterson. Thank you for sharing your ideas with me.

Peterson wrestles with himself when he lectures - he is searching for knowledge. In this sense he is like Socrates and proper truth-seekers. Politicians talk like they already have truth embodied within themselves and their ideologies.

This is, perhaps, my favorite bit about watching him lecture: Not that he "knows" but seeing him work it out as he goes. And that he makes so much sense!

I feel like Some of this dude's lectures should be mandatory in high school across the country. He really teaches lessons that people need really need to hear but don't get enough of in modern society.

Sock Monkey -Fuck yourself. I began listening to Dr. Peterson about a year ago when I was 14 years old. I’m currently a freshman in highschool and have watched nearly all of his famous lectures on meaning, relationships, mental health, free speech, and many others. I listened to his book. I’ve been battling severe clinical depression since I was 7 years old. Dr. Peterson got me out of a rut with his lectures and really opened my mind to different perspectives. My world view has been changed many many times over the course of my life so far and his channel gave me even further insight into how I should conduct myself in life. That being said- quit assuming kids are fucking stupid. Shit like what you said PISSES me off to no end. I’m sorry you were a stupid child and thought everyone your age was stupid. God damn... (i’m sorry if i came off as an asshole, your comment just really struck a nerve. i hope you reconsider your beliefs and have a good day)

Nothing should be mandatory tbh. Or not in that way. If governments all over the world defund postmodern studies, marxist studies and their respective propaganda (specially with respect to international organizations), we'd be quite better off without making something mandatory in anyway.

I am overcoming insane anxiety jumping into becoming a student of economics after 10 years. Every fiber in my body screams flee, but my soul - and your lectures Jordan - tells my body to stay calm and boldly go forward. You're lectures, philosophy and persona has inspired me in ways I always looked in movies and music. But in the end - I only need a father figure to tell me straight that there is no escaping the chaos that is life.

He is so good at 'surfing the abyss' then helpfully pulling you back out at the other side. He goes the opposite direction from people who sugar-coat and set impossible expectations of the world.

@@jamescarr4662 here's the simple answer. really, because he's rational, measured and above all, principled.he tackles things in a pragmatic manor, disassembles the far left ideologies that dominate schools and colleges, and is an inspiration to young women and men alike. he's the kind of man everyone should look up to and base their character off of. and even if you do happen to disagree with him on certain or all issues, you can surely admire his practical approach to everything we see him do. if not, then I'm sorry, I can't help you.

He is doing good work - but simply reiterating what was lost when we tossed out the Bible - what our civilisation was really built on. He is humble enough to admit it's simply restoring old values. I know you will get free of that. It's way too complicated, way too heavy to remain stuck. I can sense you are moving forward. Takes time, baby steps are fine, with the pandemic, social unrest, there is only one choice, reclaim your life now. Let the others that try to hold you down fall away. I thought my past was a blueprint for my future. I, too dealt with the same issues you mentioned. I've grown out of that gradually. I'm a better version of myself now. Still growing. I was a little underwhelmed of the beginning of the presentation, mostly for egoistic reasons, since it wasn't providing me with something I need right now. Then he just dropped this: "What should constitude the transcendent value that sits above all other values is your capacity to voluntarily accept the restricted and painfull conditions of your life. To face them and as a consequence of that to immediately transcend them." This is excactly the answer to a question I would have asked him if I had the chance. What is an example of a "higher good"? It took 24 hours to sink in and lift my mood which was declining bit by bit within the last weeks. Obviously I needed that answer. Truly amazing. Thank you.

Quite honestly, if there were a professor at every highschool like JBP, whom at a set time each day lectured a loud to the entirety of that school, the mind set of those youth through latter years of primary schooling would be altered in a way that would be so incredibly beneficial that the course of history might change from the disaster we currently face.

Tonight I will pray for Tammy Peterson to get well. I live in Albania, in the middle of nowhere, and I have been blessed to listen to Dr. Peterson, and to stop harming the universe around me with my regrettable choices. Thus, as I pray this evening, I will ensure that tomorrow I act as if God exists, or at least fearful in my heart that he may exist. And maybe my prayer will not count much, or maybe it will, but I will be a happy and a grateful person when Tammy and the Peterson family get over this difficult period.

Watching this in 2021, you can almost hear the exhaustion in his voice compared to some of the other lectures earlier in 2019. So sad to see his health decline imthe way it did and I sincery hope that he returns to his best to share more of his knowledge to us all.

I saw him in person March 2022, and I was very struck when he first came on stage by how very tired he looked. It made me sad. He has fought so hard and brought so much good to the world but with so much personal cost.

Two great things stood out for me in this talk. First, the admonition that, okay, you've chosen your gender, now what? Second, if conservatives are to swing the pendulum back to the right in a meaningful way, a leader must emerge that tells people the truth; that this country is only held together by responsible individuals. Each person has a responsibility to take care of their self to the best of their ability. If they're already proficient at that, then they have a responsibility to take care of their family, their community and their country. "Ask not what your country can do for you; ask what you can do for your country." It's time to bring that message back. It's time to learn the meaning of sacrifice again. God create man in His image. He created order out of chaos. Every individual has that power. Start by making your damn bed.

I'm so glad and grateful to have found you Dr Peterson, I've listened to you since I found your video excerpt popped up on my youtube browser a month ago. bought your book soon after that and haven't finished reading it yet.. I'm still trying to get myself in order and stand up for myself more even though there are consequences. there's a lot still that I need to learn and let go and accept.. I am only one of those who have listened to you and understand the point of it, in the current world situations we really need someone like you.. To have such a brilliant, brilliant mind be the fuel to relight so many fires is such a joy and so necessary in these times. You're helping me piece my life together in the form of structure and meaning which is consequently transforming me into a more competent, loving and understanding soul for myself and my communities. I can't thank you enough, seriously! My life consisted of a failed suicide and unbelievable exestential anxiety and depression which prevented me from going outside for nearly 10 years. Now, even though the anxiety persists in my day to day; I'm staring it right in the face with hope. I'm growing and happy because you were brave enough to speak your truth. You threw yourself into the public eye (for better or worse) in the persuit of wisdom and love towards others. Thankyou from the bottom of my heart.

On the other hand, If I really focus, I starting finding all sorts of statements that resonate and make me think and I'll start pausing and analyzing about things and that damn 90min talk takes an entire week to go through ! God, Listening to this in my garden, hot mug of tea, wrapped up and bathed in the fresh September morning sun just finished a 10hour waking nightshift in the charity sector. Thanking God for blessings and one in particular; the influence and teachings that Jordan Peterson has laid on us through UTube. Theres a warmth and humility to his real world message, optimistic scepticism. Hope! BUT with a caviat, a sting in the tail, voluntary adoption of personal responsibility...👏👏 and 🙏💜to him and his family..

I like to think of Peterson as one of the pillars in my life, almost akin to my parents. He has taught me and opened my eyes to so much psychologically and on how I perceive the world in general. Thank you Dr. Peterson!

"I'll close with this" pretty reliably means there are 30-45 minutes to go. That's pretty good for such heady ideas. I'm not sure how one stands up and angrily protests someone who gives all evidence of being one of the most careful thinkers alive. Question him, sure. Argue, perhaps. But protest? Or worse, publicly throw a fit and call it a protest? How laughable.
