Rose has long justified the play by saying that "going all out, even in the All Star game was his style, and he didn't believe in playing the game any other way". Fast forward eight years later and Rose has a 44 game hitting streak. In game #45, he's 0 for 3 with a walk and batting with two out is the 9th inning with the Reds trailing the Braves 16-4. Gene Garber is on the mound for Atlanta and he runs the count on Rose to 3-1. Garber's next two pitches are off the plate. but Rose has to chase them and strikes out swinging. In the press conference after the game, Rose has a profanity laced tirade aimed at Garber for "pitching me like it was the 7th game of the World Series". So in other words, in a meaningless All Star game you're supposed to wrecklessly go all out because that''s the way the game is played, but in a meaningful regular season game Garber is supposed to give in to Rose and let his streak continue. Players on other teams couldn't stand Rose and oftentimes his own teammates couldn't stomach him. I'm sure Garber was glad to stick it to him. The biggest laugh was when Rose ripped Garber saying that his hitting streak was "for the fans" and that Garber had "robbed the fans". Yeah, right. As arrogant as Rose was, it was all about him. For those who are wondering, Rose got 4 hits in the next game against the Padres, before going hitless in the game after that. In fact, Rose would go hitless in 15 of the Reds next 26 games.

Nah, you're being willfully obtuse. The way Garber pitched around Rose would fall in the same category as bunting in the 9th inning to break up a no hitter. No rule breaking by the letter of the rules on Garbers part, but he did break the spirit of the rules. You know, unwritten rules? Sounds like Rose give you the Red Ass (pun intended) and you didn't like the man personally. Sounds like jealousy on your part and that's understandable. IDK who your team is, but I'm sure no one on it has as many hits as the greatest hitter in MLB history.

@@bajikimran2304 I love the fact that Rose won batting titles, MVP awards , 3 rings and his name is at the top of the career records lists. Fosse could have done a lot more if he had the baseball instincts, or the good common sense, not to block the base path without the baseball. But he didn't and that's that.

Excellent post and spot on. As a big MLB fan as a kid I followed the sport by reading The Sporting News and listening to practically every Braves game via radio. Respected Rose at first but over time learned what a selfish, crass human being he was. I remember the Gene Garber episode exactly as you noted. His later banishment for gambling did not surprise me one bit. Sociopaths almost always push things too far and get exposed for all to see.

Before judging Pete Rose, you have to remember the context of the 1970 All-Star game. The All-Star game back in the day was not considered meaningless by the players. The American and National League were two separate leagues that did not like each other and did not play each other until the World Series. There was a lot of pride, bragging rights and money on the line for these All-Star games. Could Pete Rose have went around Ray Fosse? Probably but like it or not, It wasn’t the way the game was played back then!

Impeding the path of a runner without the ball was against the rules if I remember correctly. Injuries ruin the careers of a lot of athletes. Injuring my lower back playing baseball at 14 years old ended my baseball dreams as far as at least getting to play Minor league ball or small college. Thousands of stories like that from high school kids with just one injury taking the edge off your skills or losing a step as far as speed and quickness goes. Sports did a number on my body. The thrill of victory and the agony of defeat. ABC Wide World of Sports.The ski jumper crashing, I ragged doll a good 100 yards at 19. Half my life was spent physically disabled. Sure was fun though but if had to do it over, I don't know. Them thar books and classrooms look a little more appealing in hindsight, lol.

I was born in 1963, so me and my classmates were just embarking on our little league careers in the aftermath of this event. Back then, Pete Rose set the standard for how the kids I knew wanted to play the game: all-out-effort, head-first slides, etc. I love the fact that Pete bowled him over. Fosse made the decision to block the plate without the ball--that's his problem. Fosse was nobody whose baseball card we cared about owning, but Pete Rose's card was highly desired. Rose went on to pass Ty Cobb in hits. Several decades later, we look at Rose differently because of the cheating scandal. Today's kids are riding around on their bikes with their hand-held devices playing electronic games while they ride. They are not passionate about the game the way that we used to be. Today kids delude themselves into believing that Fosse had a right to block the plate in a meaningless game. That's hogwash.
@michaell874
@michaell874 4 ай бұрын
There are a few things to consider here. Back then players were competitive and wanted to win regardless of whether or not the game was deemed meaningless. Then, if you Pete Ross after he rounded third, he looked like he wanted to dive, but with Ray Fosse blocking the plate, it looked as it Rose was trying to decided, but then lost his footing just prior to barreling into Fosse. It was unintentional and unfortunate that Fosse was injured on that play, but there have been many players that made the all star game who seemed to have their careers take a tailspin shortly thereafter. Therefore, I reject the accusation that this play altered Fosse’s career afterwards.

Fosse was trying to make a play that wasn't there. He could have conceded the run and backed up to cut off the ball. You don't have much time to react though. You do what you do, and what the baserunner does is try to make home plate. That's what baseball is. Score runs. Stop the opponent from scoring. Get on base. Get around. The All-Star game is still a baseball game. I think people are annoyed above all because baseball is not considered a contact sport. So.... he broke his index finger twice. He charged the mound and ended up with 5 stitches in his finger. He broke up a clubhouse brawl and got injured doing so. He didn't tell his manager that he was injured after the 1970 ASG.... He went on to play many productive seasons, winning golden gloves in 1970 and 71. On the "meaningless" (good Lord....) play, Pete Rose was on his way into a headfirst slide. Fosse was straddling the foul line and he knew in the final half second that Rose would get to him before the ball. Rose had no where to go - his momentum was carrying his straight into Fosse - who didn't pull out of the play (which he should have done). Why not? Because the American League wanted to win - and they had to stop Pete Rose from scoring to win. Rose, on the other hand, wanted to win for the National League. Why such a big deal? This was before free agency. Before interleague play. The ONLY time one league could prove to the fans that it was better than the other league was at the All-Star Game. There had been a rivalry between leagues from the very start. (Indeed, there was no WS in 1903 because NY Giants manager John McGraw refused to play the inferior American League.) In the late 60s and 1970s and 1980s Chub Feeney was the President of the National League. Players are on record telling about the pre-game speeches Feeney gave them about the importance of winning the ASG and proving that the NL was the better league (the NL won every year from 1963-1982 with the exception of 1971). So, this "meaningless" play had indeed meaning. It boils down to Fosse stayed too long on the foul line without the ball and Rose had nowhere to go but through him. The National League won, and Pete Rose was smart enough to tell his manager that he was injured. What is sad is that because of Rose's gambling addiction, unknowing, uncaring modern "fans" use this play to vilify Rose as a dirty player. Something he wasn't.

He would have gotten a MRI on his shoulder, they would’ve found the injury, and he would have gone for surgery or rehab.

Obviously a video put up by a Rose hitter in order to draw comments from Rose haters. The notion that Rose ruined Fosse’s career is bullshit. Fosse went on to play on two World Series teams after that and played until 1979. Back then the All Star Game meant something and winning was a matter of league pride. As Rose correctly pointed out, “ fans paid more to get into that game than a regular season game. I’m not supposed to try and win that game.” Now the All Star game is a joke. Also, any honest review of the film of the collision clearly shows had shifted his weight forward way before he got Fosse because his initial intention was to go into his head first slide. However, Fosse had the plate blocked so there was no way to slide to it so Rose just lumbered forward and bowled him over. Bottom line is Pete Rose was an All-Star at five different positions. No other player can make that claim. He also the old-time hit leader. he was a take no prisoners type player and you’ll never see his life again.

Rose def didn't have any path to slide and he even starts to duck down to headfirst slide but pulls up as he realizes he has no path... By the rules and standards of the time, if a catcher stood where Fosse was standing he knew he was probably going to get run into... At all levels of play catchers knew this... Prior to the rule changes about collisions, catchers were taught that it was your plate and your job in moments like that was to be a brick wall for the runner to hit and hold onto the ball in the process... Fosse knew what he was doing and he paid for it...

I hate that you used new stats like OPS and WAR to talk about old school players. Those numbers didn't mean anything then and they don't mean anything now. The Seattle Mariners have been telling me Dylan Moore is a great baseball player because he has a high OPS. He's a sub-par player, so OPS is actually a potentially misleading stat, while WAR imagines a replacement player, which is inherently not fact-based. Give me batting average, OBP, SLG, runs, and RBI. Add in SB, SB%, and HR if you want. That's how you can tell if a ballplayer is productive or not.

No, Fosse’s career wasn’t ruined by this play. He was behind the plate for the next three weeks before taking a day off. His first half of the 1970 season was a freak power surge that had never appeared before or after. Fosse played in over 100 games over the next three years, and this narrative that makes Rose look like a mean baller.

Yes his career was changed by that play AND an organization at THAT TIME did not value the career of their players and ONLY sought immediate gratification. It was reported years later that instead of allowing Ray Fosse to heal the Cleveland management decided to play him regardless, and this was a team going ABSOLUTELY NOWHERE. If that had been Johnny Bench with the Reds fighting for playoff and Possible World Series do you believe for one minute Bench would have played after that collision? ALSO AT that time the AllStar game was ONLY about pride and bragging rights, there was ABSOLUTELY NOTHING on the line win or lose
