The Sacred City presents compelling evidence that suggests the holy city of Mecca is in the wrong location and that the worlds 1.6 billion Muslims are praying in the direction of the wrong city. Compiling evidence from both historic sources and new technologies point to the correct location in this seismic, revelatory new film.
In this startling and original documentary, writer and historian, Dan Gibson, shows that descriptions of Mohamed’s original holy city - as detailed in the Qur’an and Islamic histories, do not match that of the Mecca we know today. If true this could shake Islam to it’s roots, because every Muslim is required to pray towards the ‘forbidden gathering place’. If Dan Gibson is right, Muslims are praying in the wrong direction.
In the film ‘The Sacred City’ we set out his evidence from within Islamic and ancient histories - while also using modern technologies - to track down the biggest secret of the last fifteen hundred years. Gibson not only finds the location of the original Mecca but also provides a convincing argument as to how such a great misunderstanding in Islamic history came about.
While clearly controversial, The Sacred City is respectful of Islam’s prophet, and does not dispute the events of the Qur’an; but shows how a deliberate attempt was made to hide from Islam, secrets that impact every Muslim today. The evidence is compelling and fascinating.
In a time when the world agenda is being set by Islam, it is more important than ever for the origins and history of this world religion to be examined afresh. This is an important documentary with world-wide appeal for both religious and secular audiences.
Beautifully filmed in the ruins and deserts of the middle east, the film is a detective story that investigates the dawn of Islam and will become the most talked about film for years to come.

There is a phenomena called CONTINENTAL DRIFT. Continental drift is the theory that the Earth's continents have moved over geologic time relative to each other, thus appearing to have "drifted" across the ocean bed.

Interesting hypothesis. I decided to look into it, and for anyone truly interested in credible/academic sources, I recommend David A. King´s review on the topic titled "Islamic Sacred Geography and finding the Qibla by the sun and stars: a survey of the historical sources (with an appendix on some recent fallacies concerning mosque orientation)". Btw, the "Petra theory" has not only been criticized by King but by other renowned historians as well.

@Ray S Good thinking Ray if we are talking only about writers of books. Macca is a live city, vibrant and Holy since Islam was established, so it is not in books alone but in real life and action of people movement in Macca. I hope you see my point. This is not real research, this is something else. Everything from the start I noticed the disfigurement in the narratives, it's so obvious. Nice talking to you Ray. Keep well and Keep Safe. Amazing research, Allah is not confined by space, but when a person stands towards such a center, because of many reasons he is nearer to Allah and feels himself in Allah's proximity. The turning of the Muslims of the world towards this holy center five times a day creates the inspiration of oneness and unity and this creates the similarity between the Muslims of the world and connection between them who are spread from East to West and shows their magnanimity and greatness and after all represents to the world the purpose and faith of Islamic teachings.

Look also into the work of Dr. al-Jallad on epigraphy (rock inscriptions). It sheds light on the origins of Arabic and the type of Arabic used in the Quran, which is northern Arabic. This agree well with Gibson's findings, as well as the geographical descriptions in the Quran, which are to places much further north than Mecca. Cheers!

The confusion here stems from the way Arabic text is written in English. The word "Haram" in Majid-a-Haram is a different Arabic word (that is spelled differently in Arabic) than the word meaning forbidden: Haram. This word means sanctuary or holy shrine. For example Mecca and Madina are commonly referred to as the "Harameen Sharifine" meaning the two holy shrines. These two words are also pronounced differently. The word forbidden is pronounced with a more extended second "a" (Haraam), while the word for shrine is a quick two syllables (ha-ram)

Quite enlightening about the history of the middle east civilisation and their belief and the desert landscape. Very educational. One thing I've learnt : The ME civilisation has been fighting since historical time. So fighting existing today among the ME countries with different tribes or people shouldn't be a surprise. They have been fighting since historical time, and may continue to fight till eternity. The main reason they are fighting may not be religious, but more of tribal or cultural differences. Another thing learnt is that people who believe in a religion are followers. They don't question critically or out of reverence. They just follow whoever is preacher of the day ("reformists"), or,. adhere to their belief of ancient days which they believe to be more authentic (fundamentalists). Hence science poses a challenge to their belief - because they don't analyse their own belief critically, but just follow. So Muslims will fight against people of other faiths as well as people who also share the same faith..

The terms "masjidilharam" can't be interpreted literally as "forbidden place of gathering". It's too simplistic and not accurate. There are historical context for every sentence in Quran which must be taken into consideration. Muslim call this field as tafsir. Even in Islam there not many scholar who has the capacity in tafsir of Quran. There many things you must check to give the most accurate explaination for every word and sentence in Quran. You can't interpret Quran by only using archeology.

An important fact is that the Muslims conquered Mecca in the life of the prophet Muhammad (SA). Before that the Muslims had visited Mecca once to try to perform Pilgrimage which was denied by Abu-Sufyan etc. In three of the descriptions of the Prophets migration to Medina, the first visit for pilgrimage and the conquest of Mecca, the traimvel narrations do not point towards such a large distance (from Madina to Petra). Also, Muslims, starting from the life of the Prophet, annually visited Mecca and people repeated this pilgrimage several times for years. So it is not possible that the location of Mecca can change.

First off Petra was not Mecca this guy Gibson is in total error guessing. He is guessing because he knows that modern day Mecca is not ancient Mecca. So he trying to guess at an important place that it could be. But he is wrong. He is right that modern Mecca and ancient Mecca are not the same place. The descriptions do not fit modern Mecca. Modern Jerusalem also is not ancient Jerusalem and they have not found any of the biblical stone cities. These place dont just disappear. And its not that they disappeared, they were never there, but some where else. These cities were hidden including the ancient biblical cites and Mecca. When you read the book When Rocks Cry Out by Horace Butler you will see where these stones cities still stand in the americas! Yes, it sounds impossible but the proof is having the stone cities! If you cant find the ancient stone cities and historical monuments like the Kaaba then you don't have the ancient geographic locations of these places.

@Kill_Em_Dafoe Thats Horace Butler's research that he found and wrote about, in HIS book 'When Rocks Cry Out' not mine. Read that book first then you can talk about it. Right now you have NO idea and dont have the knowledge to even argue against or for it! You dont know that Adam is not the first man in existence but the first of the creation of the Egyptian Empire after he gathered and combined the scattered groups/tribes to defeat his own real fathers empire. You also have no idea that Cain and Abel are the other names for Khonsu and Bel(Ausar) and that they are the sons of Amen their father who is 'Ed'Amen, "ADAM" You dont know that when the biblical records states that Jerusalem was in a high Mountain surrounded about. that those hills over their in todays so called Jerusalem are not it. So yes, modern ancient egypt that was built after they left and fled the Americas, on its walls and records are talking about their dawn and beginnings in South America where Amens temple was in the high mountains of Peru.

I think further research might need to be made about the Zamzam well. But my theory is that the Zamzam well would just have always be there and formed naturally. And that the story about Hajar and Ishmael about the well might be just that, stories to justify the existence of the well in an arid area that's seemingly in the middle of nowhere. And the Maqaam Ibrahim, it's a stone that has an imprint of where the prophet stood when he built the Kaaba. If theories about the stone to be the related with the Black Stone that's descended from heaven is correct. Then I think that it might be coming from the same meteorite where the Black Stone comes from. Which matches the description that it's a stone that comes from heaven which can be interpreted as fallen from the sky, in other words, a meteor. Which then we can admit that the stone is definitely not of earth origin. But this is just my baseless theory, and I think further research needs to be made about it. I am a muslim, but I don't practice my religion through blind faith. I approach my religion through scientific views and always make sense of things using common sense and with historical socio-cultural contexts.

Let me start by the end of the video to give an answer to Timeline’s question why no scholar give damn about answering the theory depicted in the video: no need for a Muslim scholar to debunk it. It’s too wild theory to be taken seriously by a Muslim scholar. Do you need a history scholar to debunk a theory of moving Jerusalem from a place to another without leaving a several traces in nations history records? Such an event will be stored in the countries records for which this city (Mekka or Jerusalem) matters, whether from the communities for which these cities are holy or from their enemies or from their allies. Don’t you find it more than obvious? - “Makka was not mentioned before in history till the 6 or 7th century” quote like this one is just outrageous et non-sense : Mekka was known as Mekoba by the ancient Greek at least from the time of Ptolemy in the 2nd Century. - Makka is known in the history of Arabs as city within an entourage where each place got a name till now (mountains, caves Hiraa’e, cave of Thawr, Safaa, Marwa, roads, entries, ...). All these names are the same from ancient arab poetry to the written record of islamic history to the popular knowledge of people inhabiting Makk, the Hijaz region and the Arabic peninsula. Changing from Petra to Makka is not that easy. Moreover, this would have been a historical event which can be compared in terms of importance to the first revelation of Quran to the Prophet. It’s too holy to be changed like this without tough reaction from Muslims from all around the world. Remember the size of the Arabs empire at this time. No county was able to record such profanation. - Moroccan Mosques that were built more than 20 years ago give a prayer direction with a small angle of error like the ones shown in the documentary. All the new mosques with the arrival of the adoption and democratization of Mekka-direction compass, are directed toward Mekka with much more precision. It’s the same in other countries I travelled too. So it’s not a new discovery. Ask any muslim about this and they’ll confirm you that. - Did any historian talk about the Abyssinian invasion of Petra to destroy the Ka’ba? Never ever. For 2 reasons, there was no Ka’ba in Petra. Secondo, The Abyssinian invasion of the Arabic peninsula in the mid of the 6th century AD was targeting Mekka to destroy the holy city of Arabs and force them to adopt the Christian religion (a major church was built by Abyssinian in Yemen meant to replace the holiness of Ka’ba). This historical event is very known by the Arabs who were questioned in Quran about the intervention of God to safeguard the holy city of Mekka (to tell them that the God sending revelation to Muhammed is the same God of the Holy city, the same God of Abraham…). - The destruction of Quran copies by Othman : the guy tells what suits his theory but let me tell you what he omits: After the death of the Prophet, the 1st Calif Abu Bakr decided to compile the Quran in the order learnt by the Companions from the Prophet. With Omar, the future 2nd Calif, they assigned the mission to a Companion known for his mastering of the Quran in the life of the Prophet (and he was not alone, thousands of those who lived and supported the Prophet knows at least good parts of it by heart). The methodology was strict: they gathered first from the Revelation copyists the supports and materials on which they wrote the verses from the Prophet mouth, then they gathered the best companions who had learnt the Quran by heart and double check what they can recite with what is written in the support and cross-checked the recitations and the quran written supports. The revelation Copyists were Prophet companions in charge of writing down what was revealed to the Prophet each time it happened, they were called together by the Prophet to record it, each-one should write it down on any support he was able to afford - leather, wood, flat rock…Then these materials were stored in the houses of theses Copyists (blockchain principle : to have several distributed copies). We should underline here that the order of verses was taught by the Prophet to the Companions and Quran was given the utmost importance to be learnt by heart with the recitation rules taught by the Prophet. At the end of this process, Abu Bakr and Omar made a complete Quran checked and approved by the closest Companions to the Prophet, this Quran was considered as the Reference and was stored in the house of Hafsa one of the wives of the Prophet (daughter of the 2nd Calif Omar). It’s been stored till Othman the 3rd Calif would need it and then comes what he narrated. Othman did the best solution to make all the Quran copies used by the countries of the large Islamic empire identical to the one stored in the Medina as the Reference : he destroyed the old copies gathered from countries and gave them copies from the Reference. Is there any other solution better than this one to preserve the integrity of the Quran copies? The guy in the video tries through omissions to shade doubts on the Quran authenticity. But why doesn’t he tell the whole story? The Quran is the only religious book known by heart by tens of millions of people on earth since 14th centuries no other book got this preservation control from tampering. I my self know the third of the Quran (20+ Hizb). The Birmingham Quran manuscript, the oldest Quran pages found ever, dated to almost the time of the Prophet proved 100% that the Quran was not tampered : 0 difference between this manuscript and the Quran copies I have home. - He said that grapes were fruit not common in Mekka but common in Petra : don’t he know that Taif which is 40 miles from Mekka provide such fruit to the holy city? That some wealthy from Mekka at the time of the Prophet got agricultural lands there. There’s in Bukhari book (that he used a lot to choose what to tell to defend his theory) a story about the Prophet going there to ask for the support of Taif’s population leaders, they refused and chased him with stones till his legs got bloody. He hid in a garden where a slave brought him a bunch of grapes the very fruit that the guy used as proof it does not exist in Mekka. Moreover, thanks to its flourishing trade Mekka was wealthy and God in Quran remind the non-believers of Mekka in a chapter of Quran of that gift He bestowed on them. Moreover, “A city in a valley without plantations or agriculture” this is the description of Mekka by Abraham in a verse of the Quran narrating the story of him leaving his 2nd wife and her baby Ishmael in this Valley on the order of God/ALLAH. You can read in the Old Testament that God promised Abraham to make from this baby descendants a great nation. This nation, Arabs, knows the greatness once: thanks to Mohammed the Prophet and the Quran. Big Empire, one of the biggest, big civilization, proof for Atheists of God intervention in Human history. I would cite more proves than that, I tried to be as much concise as I can. I think it should be enough for the purpose of answering the last Timeline’s request of Muslim scholars to use their right to answer. Let them focus on other important subjects 😉

Appreciate Mr. Gibson’s efforts and persistence and have few thoughts to mention Becca is the old name of Mecca as found so in the hieroglyph writings. the name has nothing to do with weeping (weeping source in Arabic is pronounced “baka’) while the exact pronunciation of the Sacred Haram is “Bakkat” and “Makkat”. Also the valley of Bacca in the Holy Book, sounds in the region’s tongue with double “CH” as in German and not the sound of double “K”. (according to the Coptic church) The maps drawn at that time are much different than recent ones and Mr. Gibson is speaking of accuracies possible by Google Earth only, so how could these mosques be directed to Petra this way? Yet, I’ve seen a mosque built during the 90’s in Amman/ Jordan with a niche shift of maybe 30 degrees from Mecca and it was set by government Municipal surveying department. in Quran Ibrahim (Abraham) prayed to god; “Our Lord! I have settled some of my offspring in a barren valley, near Your Sacred House, our Lord, so that they may establish prayer….”(Surat Ibrahim 37). That proves that Mecca (Becca at that time) had no plantation as mentioned by Mr. Gibson, but ii proves that The Haram is described as “barren” as in Mecca region and contrary to Petra Kaaba burning and rebuilt and the Kalifate death events were after 680 AD (64H) not at 670AD this way, there is no reason to doubt that Al-Tabari had said something that was omitted regarding that year (similarly nothing was mentioned by all other historian books). The composer of this work is invited to check the above:

Really well done. I'm impressed by the level of professionalism and academic rigor offered by this video, and was fascinated from beginning to end. Having said, without knowing the Muslim point of view on the issue, I am aware the Jesus said "the kingdom of heaven is within." I imagine that most spiritual people, no matter their spiritual tradition, find internal solace as they pray. And, that doing so translates into external peace.

As a history enthousiast i find this documentary very interessting especially as they say we do not know much about the region and the history. I think they should be more researchers from different fields to give us their views and analysis. My opinion ? ***like all archelogic studies all remain theories and assumption ***the twelve degree difference is normal, they were not accurate that day, the right approach is to use the old method to calculate the direction ***I know that Bagdad and Alexendria library were burnt, many knoweldge were destroyed and many historian think that was a turning point in history ***Why they dont talk about the surrounding kingdoms (Ethiopia, Yemen, Persian, Roman)

I find it interesting that they could change the direction where they are praying too. Yes basically you get heared when you are praying, but when its an "holy place" shouldnt it be there for ever? For me this feels like changing your roots. Its lying to the thing you believe in when you dont worship the place it started from. Its gets forgotten and then you loose the value it gave to people.

Interesting. Many will believe Dan's Theory. One thing that got me the most is about "hira cave". just like Dan's said. The cave is the place for seeking revelation. it must not be some kind of empty cave with nothing in there. it must be a cave where many people go there to seek for self-revelation. And so the idea of the "original hira cave" found in petra served it best. it looks like a kind of place where someone will go for prayer and to seek for the true meaning of life.

What he says is not that new though as it is supported by other evidence and a long time ago scholars started to notice for example that the linguistics and geography of the Quran does not agree with the Mecca region. If you're interested in the history, two excellent books are Early Islam by Ohlig and The Hidden Origins of Islam by Ohlig & Puin. They contain many fascinating works within!

Thank you for doing a "scientific research" on the fastest growing religion on earth. Many muslims, if not all of them, would agree with me that it doesn't really matter whether Muhammad was born in Mekkah or in New York, or whether the current location of Mekkah is different from the ancient one or not. Actually, muslims know that the ancient Kaabah was larger in surface than the current one, yet millions and millions of muslims come to visit this holy place every year.

The biggest problem with this claim is that the presenter conflates several different events that happened in different caliphates and periods as if they were contemporary. Ulthman was the third Rashidun Caliph and the rebellion of Ibn Zubayah wasn't until much later until long after the alleged burning of the library of Alexandria which likely didn't exist by that time. Also the Umayyad mosques in Spain make sense if you transport them to Damascus and then they point towards Mecca.

Well, I think the most important point made in this entire video is that the geographical area currently comprising Mecca doesn't even remotely possess the characteristics described in the Koran as those of Mecca: fertile, arable land for growning lots of crops, an abundant water supply, and a sizeable population. And it's not just that contemporary Mecca doesn't currently have these characteristics, it's that the proof is beyond any possible debate that it absolutely couldn't have had these characteristics 1,400 years ago, either. Contemporary Mecca is an utterly barren place with no evidence it ever had any fertile soil or water sources anywhere in its vicinity, and absolutley no evidence whatsoever of a significant population at the time of Muhammad. This right here is pretty much an insurmounable problem with the contemporary understanding of where the 'Mecca' of the Koran really is.

I suggest looking for some remenence of wood in those post holes and carbon date them. There is also a two qibla mosque in Gujarat, India... named "Barwada Mosque" in Ghogha on the Gulf of Khambhat. At the Barwada mosque in Ghogha, the qibla, indicated by the position of the mehrab is towards Jerusalem, an angle nearly 20 degrees north of the qibla towards Mecca. this reflects that this mosque of Gujarat must have been build before the prophet's declaration of changing the Qibla. its also reflects that merchant and traders from Arabian peninsula came to India for the trade from the time of prophet Muhammad(PBUH), from the time of early era of Islam. & the mosque in Ghogha may be older than many of Arabia's ancient mosques. none of the mosques in Medina are in their original shape.

When Abraham took his wife Hagar and Ismail to Makkah and left them there the place was barren and had no water. But after Hagar started running between Safa and Marwa eventually Gabriel came and hit the earth and the water of Zam Zam gushed out. The early caravans bypassed Makkah but at one time when they saw birds flying towards the firection of Makkah they realized that there must be water 💧 and that's how they followed that path and came across a woman and a child all alone in the valley and that's when they came to know there was water. Eventually Makkah became a stop for caravans to fetch for water and watered their animals and the tribe of Jurham came to live there. That's how Makkah became a popular stop for caravans to stop for water. If Muslims are facing wrong direction for prayers are implying that Allah misled his noble Prophet Abraham to build His house in the wrong place? Please think as Prophets cannot make errors.

The crescent moon and the black stone the Muslims walk round at Mecca are from the pre Muslim religion, when the people of Arabia and Iraq worshipped the moon. These symbols were absorbed into Islam.Mohammed travelled with his uncle around Arabia and Across into Egypt. He picked up Jewish and Christian teaching when he visited Synagogues and churches, but neither the Jews nor the Christians would let him convert to their religion, from worshipping the Moon God, so he started his own religion -- Islam. He incorporated the teachings he had heard into his own teachings. Non of his followers could read and write so it was important that his followers learned his teachings by heart. Even today Jewish children learn the Law (the first 5 books of the Bible )off by heart , when they go to Hebrew classes after school. The Quaran was codified 250 years after the time of Mohammed ,and there were 8 ancient copies written on vellum ,rather than papyrus . One of these ancient codices is in Cairo and the other is in Baghdad. The other 6 have not survived. The earliest Jewish Scroll dates from 100 years before Christ ,and individual books of the New Testament date from the late 1st century and 2nd century AD. All 3 of these religions had a long tradition of scribes faithfully copying the sacred texts, until the art of printing was invented. The Christian scribes did not only copy the Old and New testaments. They also copied Greek and Roman poetry ,plays and historical documents. There are over 5ooo copies of ancient New Testament books .

So, Ibn Zubeir changed a whole holy city from its place, and changed the Qibla direction which represents a pillar in the Islamic faith but no Muslim protested at that time, and no historian or theologist spoke or wrote about this spectacular and grandiose event in all the Islamic history, even the victorious rivals of Ibn Zubair who were in Damascus didn't say anything about that?!! That means that this relocation of the sacred city of Mecca was one of the most successful conspiracies in human history because all Muslims and non-Muslims of that time and all the rival clans (Ibn Zubeir in Mecca, the Umayyad in Damascus, The shiites in Iraq and the anarchist and extremist Kharijites who were everywhere) liked and participated in the relocation of the city and in the changement of the Qibla, and they collaborated to keep that secret and succeeded in that task for more than a thousand years !!

Catholicism, Islam, Zoroastrianism, Judaism: they all survived over a thousand years. It's a long time but it doesn't say anything about veracity. It's quite imaginable that the Qibla could be moved if you were only roughly supposed to face it and weren't required to face it 100% accurately 🤷‍♀️

Hello there... I totally respect your work... This is a lot of pleased efforts my friend... I want to add a small point... From the Quraan itself...showing in clear Arabic language that faith is not dependent on Qibla direction... Thank you again for the wonderful information.

The problem with the koran is that you can find whatever you want in its pages or in the earlier Muslim writings "The fools among the people will say: "What hath turned them from the Qibla to which they were used (? the far mosque)?" Say: To God belong both east and West: He guideth whom He will to a Way that is straight. Thus, have We made of you an Ummat justly balanced, that ye might be witnesses over the nations, and the Apostle a witness over yourselves; and We appointed the Qibla to which thou wast used, only to test those who followed the Apostle from those who would turn on their heels (From the Faith). Indeed it was (A change) momentous, except to those guided by God. And never would God Make your faith of no effect. For God is to all people Most surely full of kindness, Most Merciful. We see the turning of thy face (for guidance) to the heavens: now Shall We turn thee to a Qibla that shall please thee. Turn then Thy face in the direction of the sacred Mosque: Wherever ye are, turn your faces in that direction. The people of the Book know well that that is the truth from their Lord. Nor is God unmindful of what they do. Even if thou wert to bring to the people of the Book all the Signs (together), they would not follow Thy Qibla; nor art thou going to follow their Qibla; nor indeed will they follow each other’s Qibla. If thou after the knowledge hath reached thee, Wert to follow their (vain) desires, - then wert thou Indeed (clearly) in the wrong. S. 2:142-145 Y. Ali

Or what the greatest of the early Muslim historian and commentator al-Tabari had mentioned on the verse below: The Change of Qiblah One of these is God’s changing of the Muslims’ Qiblah (the direction faced in prayer) from Syria (that is, Jerusalem) to the Ka‘bah. This was in the second year of the Prophet’s residence in Medina, in Sha‘ban (which began January 28, 624). The early scholars disagree as to the date at which the Qiblah was changed in this year; the majority say that it was changed halfway through Sha‘ban, eighteen months after the arrival of the Messenger of God in Medina.

@The Guidance Counsellor I don’t take offense from idiots. Some cities predate all religions and not just Islam, Damascus is one of those. As such, the Umayyad Mosque is an ancient site that once held a temple to the Roman God, Jupiter. The same site was later made into a synagogue, then a church, then, during the Umayyad period, it was made into a mosque. PS: before you go around calling people stupid, I suggest that you be knowledgeable, cultured, and smart enough so as not to make a fool of yourself.
The Guidance Counsellor

@Mr Nobody I didn't call you stupid, I said your comment was because Mosques did not predate Islam. Yes the site at which the mosque is built predates Islam but as it was expanded in size and completely changed, a distinction must be made. I also don't believe Damascus predates all religion. Pretty sure the Canaanites (if you're referring to this far back) were polytheistic.
Mr Nobody
Mr Nobody Жыл бұрын
@The Guidance Counsellor you contradict yourself wildly. When the site was expanded and changed, the prayer wall of the mosque faced exactly between the two cities of Mecca and Petra and still does so till this day. This proves the video correct and your first comment to be made of ignorance and completely irrelevant.

Dude! This theory could be tested by simply checking only those places where Petra and mecca are close to 180 degrees opposite to each other i.e. you are standing in such a place where if you face mecca your back is towards Petra and if you face Petra your back is towards Mecca. One such place is Medina and If you see mosques from the period of Prophet's(P.B.U.H) life in Medina they are in the general direction of mecca.FYI in Islam it was advised to face the general direction of Mecca.

You are ignorant of islamic history so you agree with Dan Gibson theory. In the early years of islamic history some of Muhamed's followers migrated to Ethopia which was across the Red Sea near present day Mecca because of persecution by Meccan. This cannot fit the Geography of Petra because Ethopia was thousand of kilometres south-west of Petra and the journey was torturous. So clearly Muhamed could not be from Petra.

REFUTATIONS: I carefully examined the documentry and could not find one spec of concrete evidence. Here are six point that come to mind. 1) Becca inscriptions can be found in Petra for pilgrims going to mecca. 2) Mousqes mensioned in the researcher have a deviation of 12 degrees (not accurate but acceptable) and can not be used to direct Qiblas to Petra. 3) Mecca was not historically relavent till the advent of Islam as it was formarly a place for bedouin idole worshippers and had no significant geopolitical involvment in the region. This is why it is not in western maps at the time. 4) The naration of fruits and trees does not necessarily mean fields of greenery and could well be in reference to simple vegetation that grows where ever it rains. Remember Medina not too far from Mecca is known historically as a date tree oasis. 5) Historic evidence clearly shows Mecca (in now called Saudia Arabia) and not in Jordon, see authentic islamic sources. No historic or geological evedince can be found of Muslim pilgrims going to petra. 6) The Abbasi denisty is not historically known to have moved the Qibla from Saudia Arabia to Petra. I can go on for ever but all I can say is may God guide Gibson to the truth.

Interesting that Becca sounds very similar to Beqaa, the Beqaa Valley is geographically part of the Great Rift Valley that runs along the Sea of Galilee, the Dead Sea and into the Gulf of Aqaba, and on into the Red Sea. It is also interesting that the Quran talks about two bodies of water, one salty, like the Dead Sea and one sweet water, like the Sea of Galilee, that do not mix. These two waters are both below sea level and the gradient between the two is gradual, so that the river meanders because the water is moving slow enough that it will have a very distinct salinity gradient.

When I watched this video, I wonder how much Arab world developed their civilization to the point where they were able to enter the enlightenment age. It was a short lived era but the evidence from Andalucia tells me that the era Muslims civilization willing to live coexist together and put their religion differences aside. Still a good documentary about history I am fond to know more. Except when I heard a single word "Challenged" and how the presentation was executed and finally a question "did they really wrong all this time?", okay that is enough. I read the comments exactly match the most common problem documentary evidence Hypocrisy mindset. I am Asian from the land below the wind, Sabah Borneo Island. Where I have come from, learn just one thing when it comes to religion talks, "You can listen, but never believe". Any single word or single sign shows you want to start claiming that you are always right from the start when others wrong means bad intentions. I'm sorry, I am a Catholic and seeing this one, no matter how much your introduction as an expert and living 30 years with Arab people, having discussed with a scholars, history experts or bla bla bla bla bla... That's not related or relevant when you are not Down to earth humble man. I have done the same thing for Muslim civilization religion talk and we treat it as it humble down to earth as a sign of respect. Something you never seen this coming hits you later. Come on, you can do better than that. Like Morgan Freeman did it respectful way... Don't hurt Muslim people feeling or making them fighting each other for this kind of documentary.

Ka’ba was first built by prophet Ibrahim & his son Ismael ( on & off later it’s been repaired & reconstructed)! & wearing Arabic dresses & speaking Arabic in middle wheats doesn’t mean someone is Muslim who someone who really know Islam! - Last but not least: The destruction by Arabs of the Alexandria library!? First, the library suffered several fires since it was founded in the 3rd century BC, when the Arabs came the library had suffered long centuries of negligence by the newly Christian roman empire who was no more interested in the pagan philosophy. Papyrus was the main material used for the books of this library and it made them fragile and can’t survive long years if they are not copied regularly. The books were already ruined and useless. Fire was better than throwing them in the Nile, the same Arabs helped promote the sciences from the Greek, Persian and Indian heritage the years after. Secondly Egypt was conquered with minimum battles because the small Muslim army managed to sign peace or submission treaty that protected the rights and the privileges of the Egyptian Copt and Christians. For these last, the library and its books were worthless because no Christian care about it and it's no more financed to me maintained in good condition. I would cite more proves than that, I tried to be as much concise as I can. I think it should be enough for the purpose of answering the last Timeline’s request of Muslim scholars to use their right to answer. Let them focus on other important subjects 😉

You are ignorant of islamic history so you agree with Dan Gibson theory. In the early years of islamic history some of Muhammad's followers migrated to Ethopia which was across the Red Sea near present day Mecca because of persecution by Meccan. This cannot fit the Geography of Petra because Ethopia was thousand of kilometres south-west of Petra and the journey was torturous. So clearly Muhamed could not be from Petra.

I always think of discrepancies in the evolution of Islam after Prophet Muhammed. Petra could or could not be where the Prophet was born but the more important and disturbing fact is that the Quran changed over the years after the time of Muhammed. Hadid became as important as the scripture and they were collected and gathered after 200 years of the time of the Prophet which he himself restricted writing down his words as he knew they could easily get manipulated and forged and will contradict the scripture. Today there are many Hadid which are contradicted the verses of the Quran. Hadid even often times contradicted each other in the books of different imams who gathered those so-called Hadid.
