Many thanks for your description of the Medici history. In 1962 our family received a letter from the Vatican. My maternal grandmother was Pucci. Antonio Maria Pucci was from a family with 23 Priors and 3 Cardinals. Antonio was canonized December 9, 1962. Eventually I became interested in doing some research into that portion of or family history. We found that the Pucci were allies of the Medici during the transition from republic to dukedom and grand dukedom. Some of the history pertained to the Lateran Councils circa 1200. Other facets described the possibility of familial relations when the Pucci may have been Saracini in name. It was said that this lead to connections by marriage to the families Julii and Claudii. What did that mean? At first I may have found Julian the Apostate was Caesar about 342 AD. Going further back Wikipedia mentions some basis of the connection maybe going to Gaius Julius Caesar and adopted grand nephew Octavius. Aka: Caesar Augustus. It became an interest to think of how Antonio became a saint and the connections to those earlier ancestors with glory and fame on one hand, as well as a huge amount of administered death. It really gives you a perspective on history. Thank you for the research you bring to us.

I know what you mean. The name in some ways serves as a "handle" to get a grip on an important as well as interesting era. We were at earlier times a cluster of little family groups. Eventually we were able to become less isolated and as we found regions that could both feed and defend a larger population we transitioned. We eventually grew into nation states but before that we were city states that started to carry on trade over the area of continents. The Medici facilitated a change in religion that allowed the banking and lending rules to be modified. It allowed interest on loans to account for risk. Trade is not always able to be complete successfully. Caravans carrying goods can bee attacked. Ships at sea can be sunk in storms or hit rocks near shore. Then there are pirates too. The inventions also created coffee houses where coffee stimulated investors to intelligently make investments and that is why stock markets developed. A share caused math to be used to compute how the share on capital invested yielded a share of the profits, if any. The bankers in Florence teamed with the traders in Venice. I believe Marco Polo came from Venice. In short we can see a conglomeration of religion, banking, trade over land and by sea, geography, navigation, etc come together in the rebirth of classical knowledge going back to Augustus Caesar and the creation of the PRINCIPATE. THE FIRST PHASE OF THE ROMAN EMPIRE.
@josephtraficanti689
@josephtraficanti689 2 жыл бұрын
BTW. Greetings brother. I am a relation to the Pucci who were allies of the Medici. There is the story of how the Florence history goes back to Gaius Julius Caesar. The transitions from political structures from and to Republic government to aristocracy to dictatorship. The Pucci hailed back to the Saracini who were rooted in the Julii and Claudii equestrian families of Roman, the Empire, and eventually to the transition of Greek Hellenism to Christianity. I have taken time off from work during the pandemic and made some research from the time of the Roman Senate, to the Roman Empire, and on to the middle ages that gave birth to the Renaissance. Eventually that branched to the Enlightenment, the British Empire. Finally the American Revolution leads to the creation of our own Declaration of Independence and the US Constitution. Whew! It was a trip!.

When I first read these series of Medici I felt cultivated, (bas relief) the Spanish rule couldn't handle the Italians, Penelope the mother of Raphael kept wearing a white veil and it felt like she swung with different men to distract people. It wasn't until the priest who underneath, kept pressing his colleagues to do away with some of this pressure, which they did.

The whole world of Florence and the Medici ...was...well, pretty alien to me, as a working class girl. ( I had never even travelled abroad! ) Really I was more into 20th century history. Ahh we make mistakes like that when we are young.😢 Great summary...have learned more about this family and the Renaissance in recent years than I ever did from my degree!😜

Families who built their wealth through trade, as opposed to inherited landholdings like the medieval nobility, quickly came to dominate many city-states. This was particularly notable in Florence, where the support of banking families such as the Medici played a crucial role in establishing the city as the birthplace of the Renaissance.

Oh boy I've read a lot and watched the series unfortunately after I visited Florence earlier this year. When you see in person the art, the buildings and everything else lasting centuries later is mind numbing experience. Those people have build a legacy for the ages ahead and immortalised their family name. They simply make the contemporary oligarchs and billionaires with their yachts look puny. Cosimo had consolidated such incomprehensible power yet he used it softly, with every monarch and the church owing him he managed to remain in the history as humanitarian and not despot. What a legend....the true ruler of Florence with no titles.

Not really a Prince though. There was never a Medici King. It was a TV show that called him a prince, not accurate.
@Alkis05
@Alkis05 Жыл бұрын
@@loveegiorno8106 through out history, prince was not always defined as the son of a king. The word prince means something like "first to take the spoils", the one owed the lion's share. In the context the Italian renascence, it meant simply "a sovereign ruler", be it a duke, king, an arch-bishop with a secular domain or the head of a city-state. So, depending on which Lorenzo de Médici you are talking about, eg. Lorenzo "the Magnificent" Médici, it is not wrong to call him a prince.

While Lorenzo (The Magnificent) had a son named Giuliano (di Lorenzo de’ Medici) he was never a cardinal nor having any position in the church. He became the Duke of Nemours. It was Giulio who became a cardinal and later became Pope Clement VII. Giulio was the illegitimate son of Lorenzo’s brother, Giuliano. So there were only two Medicis that were in the church, not 3 like the video suggests.
