My additional advice is in lieu of a museum if you are like me and wake up around the time most museum start closing, is antique stores. And in good weather maybe a flea market. But they're full of junk these days here.

Our local museum in Decatur, Texas burned to the ground last year. It was a Gothic Revival style building that had started its life as a Seminary. It housed the original documents and collection from The Lost Battalion. It also housed hundreds of primary documents used most often by genealogical researchers. My daughter had graduated from pre-school in their auditorium and was married there [it was the only venue locally that allowed us to use heavy metal music for the processional]. All was lost. There have been a lot of tears - and we are working toward re-establishing. I never thought of asking reinactors to become part of our efforts, but the trust has 5 acres, so it might be doable! November of last year I was in Newcastle for two days and went out to Jarrow and don't regret it one bit. As an Aussie archaeologist just showing up one cloudy day in late autumn and wanting to chat, all the staff and volunteers were so passionate and welcoming and I cannot recommend visiting enough. Oh as a medieval reenactor myself I know that exact feeling when you forget your cloak at home by accident and it starts to be cold or raining. I do multiple reenactment events a month so I do a lot of reenactment. Some months I have reenactment events almost every weekend. I do a lot of over night camping reenactment events too. I reenact the medieval executioner/torturer. And I love reenactment it’s an amazing community.

One of the things I've learned from my first year of re-enactment is that a lot of the public are under the impression that we as re-enactors get paid for the events we do. The group I'm in do a lot for charity based sites and events, which always gives a good feeling to support historical sites that need help.

Small local museums need the all the promo they can get. There's one in my home town that I didn't even know existed until my 20's despite being on the main high street! There's just a little plaque next to the door saying Tollbooth Museum and the whole thing is inside a 17th century gaol - so cool! I was also visiting a town further up the coast from me specifically for their aquarium and when we were wandering around looking for other stuff to do, we stumbled upon a toy museum in an old church. It was literally just someone's lifetime collection of toys from Victorian dollhouses and rocking horses to furby's and pokemon. I would never have known to look for it but it was absolutely fascinating.

My mental health was bad for many years and I just kind of stopped going anywhere and doing anything. Now it has not only begun to improve, I’ve also left full time work to return to uni and I’m trying to get back to going out and doing interesting things. This has given me the idea to make a list of all the museums and other similar properties/events, and try and get to as many different ones as I can. Thank you!

Someone I met recently expressed very clear disdain that museums have had the nerve to ask that their reenactment group 'come and do crafts with kids, which is totally not what we do' and it really left a sour taste in my mouth. Reenactment has such incredible potential in increasing historical compassion and curiosity. I'm so glad there are also reenactors like you who seem to see the value!

I had a tree fall on the roof over my bed yesterday during the hurricane about an hour after I went to bed at 6:00 a.m... So I guess it could be worse lol. I'm having micro sleeps while standing up. And now I'm going to go watch Rob Words new video from my bed which is currently in the living room. I had a waterproof mattress protector, and a lanolized wool cover on it which both got thrown in the wash on cold already. So yay wool! We push the bed out of the way before the water started pouring in. It nice having my usual Friday and Saturday content creators videos to watch.

Thank you for making this plea Jimmy. I work in the museum sector. In one of the biggest and ‘best funded’ museum set ups. (Trying not to give away anything!) . But we still have insufficient money to look after the collections. Can’t afford to buy cardboard boxes etc. The money, such as it is, is all spent keeping us appearances and playing the political games that the directors think necessary. Because that is what keeps us in business within our host institution. The museum sector is full of brilliant people but it can be a very sad place. The research that gets done through can be mind blowing, even though it’s a battle to get there.

Can confirm, joining a reenactment society is very fun! My group does 1858-1865, so a very different time. But it's a hobby that opens up so many exciting opportunities and teaches new skills! I've learned so much. I highly recommend finding a local group and giving it a try!

And then people who maybe wouldn't go will go because how often do you get to see Vikings having a sword fight? That's worth a Saturday morning.

Close to were I live there are 3 viking museums with reconstructed houses etc. Foteviken, Trelleborgen and Vikingatider. All in Scania south Sweden. Trelleborgen is reconstructed at the site of a trelleborg. Conviniently situated in the town of Trelleborg :) . And yes I go there on events. But we have a really obscure very very very small private museum here also. Kannibalmuseet :) . Swedish tv even made a program of Kannibalmuseet. And YES it is what it sounds like. 😂

I reenact the lives of women throughout different eras for schools and especially senior adult assisted living apartment complexes. the more obscure the character the more I have to research to pull off this insane feat. What is the most fun is discovering what inspires curiosity about a stranger from another time. If you can participate in Chataquan festivals, reenactments, of living history , please do. If you see living history offered please support the organizations involved. Who is my favorite character? She's a dance mistress for the Turkish Pavillion at the 1893 Chicago World;s Fair. I can adopt an accent, wear what looks like an alien and exotic costume, and help people imagine what life was like for people and what they have in common. thanks Jimmy, I respect and appreciate the work you do here on the "Tubes, Very best to everyone.

Not a re-enactor but my armoured medieval swordfighting group had one of our annual events today and it was a good time. They feed us well and we're their big draw. There's a local jousting group that's the main draw for any of the bigger events that have the space and insurance :)

Thank you for talking about independent museums being mothballed! I volunteered at our local living history museum in Dallas, TX and the management contract between the Historical Society and the City was up this spring. They decommissioned a lot of the items and has turned it into a park with historical structures on the grounds. The saddest part for my best friend and I is that this will be the first year in a decade or so that we will not be participating in any cooking for the upcoming holidays. The city has one night event for the holidays with no real flames and no real fires on the property, so no cooking for us. It's just heartbreaking.

Terrible news about Llancaiach Fawr - and it was the reenactors who really brought it alive for us. My daughter was outraged to hear that under12s had to stand at Tudor dinner tables! Jarrow Hall would be a great destination for people who are getting the Newcastle ferry to Amsterdam. You could go to the museum in the morning before driving over to the ferry port.

Wages, energy, rent, insurances and maintenance are but some of the costs associated with running a small independent museum so yes, front of house volunteers will remain essential to their future. More important, though, are the volunteer charity trustees who actually run the show, ensure that the museums deliver their charitable object and put their signature to decisions. Without them there will be no museums but trustees prepared to put in a few hours a month to help manage their local small museum are difficult to recruit. I speak from experience Chairing a heritage museum in Wales. Happy to swap notes on this.

Gosh do I wish we had that kind of thing near me. Not that I have the urge to do reenacting, but the archaeology in that corner of the world is incredible. Alas, I live in a place where not only is there no archaeology to be found, nobody would care even if there was. We have a modern art museum and a science museum; the former sees more business from grown-ups, while the latter will get kids in on field trips, but neither is particularly populated (the art museum isn’t even very populated by art). I console myself with episodes of Time Team, though they do occasionally make me a bit glum that I’ll never get to see actual old things myself.

I don't know if I'll ever go to Newcastle, but I did go to the Avalon Marshes museum recently, which is pretty cool. You can dress up as a viking or a Roman. Shields are really heavy.

I love demo fighting, SCA fiighter, not super living history level of a re-enactorr, but i love early medieval history and it's so much fun to volunteer to help local orgs. Plus we do it for recruiting other interested people. Granted California doesn't have the amount of Viking/Anglo-Saxon museums you're going to have. 😂

Excellent video! I wish that locally, I had small museums I could lend much reenacting expertise to, but the museums where I live are all focused on the 19th century onwards (well fascinating, and I can lend a bit of historical and family knowledge to that, but not reenacting; my reenactment knowledge is 12th century western european, and I'm branching out into Byzantine and Scythian stuff a bit, through my local SCA barony). But even if one's local museums aren't in your specific area of historical interest, I think everyone should go to them a hell of a lot more often. They're run on so little, and they give so much.
