A cool trick with ableton (to play this kind of melody trick) is to use a nude "midi input channel" to play simples notes (no chords) or put clips, mapped to many instrument channels (with "midi from"), headed by Midi FX (chords, apregiators, scale, random.. like your exemple). In that way you can play few notes, then an "orchestra" will play it all together

The trick is to use a pentatonic scale instead of a major/minor scale or fit an exsisting melody into that scale right? The advantage being it will work with other melodies in the same scale>?
@NahTrust
@NahTrust 7 ай бұрын
Yeah! Exactly. The pentatonic notes go well with any others in the full relevant major / minor scale, so you can riff them over each other. Then use other notes from the full scale to give it direction in the full key, if that makes sense

I love the pentatonic but I do struggle with making decent chords in the scale, doesn't seem enough choice if u know what I mean! Jamming in pentatonic is really fun, you can't go wrong

You can definitely box yourself in by limiting yourself to the pentatonic. Throw in some 7ths and 9th on your chords.

The notes in the pentatonic scale are very consonant when paired with most notes

Due to the maths of the frequencies of notes in a scale, and the historical use of popular melodies (which our brains have grown to like due to familiarity) most of the most popular melodies only use 5 specific notes from a 7-note scale. In C major or A minor, you can't go wrong if you write melodies using the white keys apart from B and F. Those notes only work well with some chords, but C D E G and A sound good over any chord in C or Am. I think the reason is that if you hold down a C major chord (C E G) and then play a B, it's too close to the C because it's literally right next to it, so it causes dissonance, and the F is only a semitone away from the E. The most pleasant melodic notes are either part of the tonic chord (C E G), or separate from it (D, A), not clashing with it (B, F). (The same applies to A minor (A C E), as the B still clashes with the C and the F is only a semitone away from the E).

he’s using 12 in this video, you can tell because of the “Use Current Scale” button (the square with the ♭♯ inside it) in the title bar of some of the devices

Genuine question, how is this not different from just staying in scale? What about Pentatonic helps with gluing everything together?

I think the second and the sixth notes are the least stable in a scale?
@pgwwa2
@pgwwa2 8 ай бұрын
there are no half tones (like between 2nd and 3rd note) which create more tension and can make things sound more interesting, but are riskier when creating a catchy melody. In pentatonic almost anything you play "makes sense" to the ear.

@@sequenza Huh, interesting, makes sense. I never considered that some notes in a scale are more “matching” with the root than others. Great starting place for me to learn more, thanks.

So with the minor penthatonic riff can work over a minor chord progression of that scale or major chord progression?
@AutPen38
@AutPen38 5 ай бұрын
If your song is in a minor key, write melodies that mostly use the minor pentatonic scale (the 1st, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 7th notes of the full scale). If your song is in a major key, use the major pentatonic scale (1, 2, 3, 5, 6). It turns out that the minor pentatonic scale in A minor (A C D E G) is the same 5 notes as the major pentantonic (C D E G A) of C major. To put it another way, if your chords only use white keys on the piano roll, your melodies will sound fine over any chord pattern if you play any of the white keys apart from B and F.
