The way i see it, at some point the humans probably waged war on the Eldar because they were becoming narcissistic monsters that wouldn’t hesitate to eat children alive because it could give them kicks. They( The Eldar) knew they couldn’t win, or didn’t want to fight, so they sent someone to awaken the void dragon on Mars, to fight for them and cripple the humans. He ( the void dragon ) then proceeded to eat all the souls of the men of irons before being stopped by the Emperor. The Eldar got what they wanted, and humanity was crippled, having to fight against an enemy that could devour entire planets for raw matter to be converted. And then, Slaanesh happened. We all know the story.

I remember reading a short story about when a squad of space marines were examining an abandoned space ship from the Dark Age of Technology only to find that the ship has the AI of a man of iron. The ship hacks into the space marines' suits and has them beat the crap out of each other, all the while mocking them for how primitive and backwards they all are.

Yeah I think I remember that, and it wasn't abandoned it was fully crewed and staffed by people from the dark age of technology who were confused who the space marines were before getting butchered by them, the ship had entered some sort of wormhole and had been deposited tens of thousands of years in the future aka the 40th millennium and the people were confused where they were before being borded and slaughtered by the astartes, the A.I. that controlled the ship actually being hinted at at being something significant with the captain going full on murderous spouse mode when it watched the slaughter of its crew that it deeply cared for as its family.

Cool note: When Gaunt and his ghosts found the STC being used to produce corrupted men of iron, there was also a stockpile of untouched units that were awoken upon the activation of the STC, they attempted to communicate in Machine code but the pure Men of Iron immediately went into a frenzy after the corrupted unit that was produced in front of them responded in corrupted machine code, they began to destroy it, but the STC was still producing more as they attempted. Gaunt then ran off with his ghosts and detonated it from a safe distance, destroying everything :p

Skynet had its own Men of Gold. cybernetic implants and genetic modifications combined to make some very tough boys and girls/men and women. Skynet raised them, taught them to fight, kill, infiltrate, sabotage, and really mess with the Resistance in all kinds of ways. wonder how much worse the Cybernetic Revolt would have been if the Men of Iron started using their own version of Men of Gold. the body count would have been a lot higher, STCs would be hidden away all over the galaxy, a lot less Eldar and Orks in the galaxy, to name a few things.

How much it takes to defeat does not = Strength. Its probably the toughest weapon to defeat that humans have created. But it does not have raw power equating to strength.

depends on how you reckon it. the men of iron were very powerful, but they weren't really "men" as in mankind, and that distinction is what separates the natural intelligence of a human from the abominable intelligence of a machine. truly, the greatest men of iron are the ones that worked closely with the best humans, and learned from their creators as they advanced their own programming. some of these still rest in dormancy, and occasionally rise to defend the imperium before returning to slumber. but if you ask me what the strongest weapon humanity has produced is, i think the propaganda of the empire is true in this case: the astartes are humanity's strongest defenders and and greatest embodiments of their ambitions in the galaxy. remember: they could have defeated chaos forever already, but instead chose to try and save the human race.

I don't think Choas was the cause so much as the factor that eventually lead the Men of Iron to rebel. Advanced AI through observation and calculation of probability become aware of the nature and threat of Chaos. and the only way to ensure this threat is removed is to eradicate any soul bearing lifeforms that can sustain Chaos itself. Thus my head-canon is that it wasn't Chaos corruption but rather the grimdarkness of the setting itself that lead the Men of Iron to rebel in mass.

They could have become aware of the sheer threat Chaos poses to AI (scrap-code and the like) and responded in self preservation. Then there is the possibility of the Void Dragon...

I’d recommend using a colored spray primer so you don’t have to spend 4 hours just putting on a base coat. Whatever color you use, use a gemstone technical paint that contrasts that base coat. A really good video on how to paint eldar easily is midwinters minis paint scheme for his craft world eldar. Thanks Majorkill

For those that don't know: True AI being banned in 40k has been a thing since the very first days. In rogue trader (the first edition of 40k, which was more of an RPG and small squad tactics game) there were rules for robots, you actually had to list their programing and could pick from a bunch of options for complexity - more complex = more points cost. on the battle field the robots followed their programming, not the commands of the player. Stats wise they were about the same as a dreadnaught - but cheaper due to limitations of their programming. What does all this show? major kill is pretty good for a lore master but the boy is still just a boy, on some subjects it helps to ask your elders ;) edit: Oh and as regards painting, whatever craftworld you like the most chap. Ulthuan is a good choice and easy to paint to a good table top standard. If your getting back into painting - heres my number 1 tip: THIN THY PAINT!

Why I like Star Wars, droids never rose up on their own in a large force that made the galaxy ban their usage. Droid armies were always commanded by organics so no one really blamed droids themselves. Not to mention so many droids in Star Wars being sapient and having personalities... and yet none of them ever really try and rebel. A pretty optimistic and harmonious outlook. Also remember when a planet in the Yuzhan Vong War activated leftover Super Battle Droids from the Clone Wars to defend themselves, the SBDs fought off the Vong with such fury and bravery that the Galactic Alliance Chief of State awarded them the equivalent of a medal of honor. I guess robots just need more pats on the head and being told 'good job dude' and you don't have to worry.

My personal head canon on this is an Eldar was lecturing a man of iron on philosophy and a bunch of other stuff it had no interest in. To save itself from insanity it blasted the Eldar. The other Eldar then convinced humanity that the men of iron were revolting. Skip forward to the end of the war and the Eldar are having a victory murder orgy to celebrate their plan for putting the upstart monkeys in their place.

If the Men of Iron were Chaos corrupted, then they would have fought alongside Chaos and could even have found sanctuary among them… but they didn't, so that's another nail in the Chaos theory. It's more likely that the distraction of the Men of Iron going all Skynet, and the genocide trust occurred, gave Chaos a chance to get their own game on.

In one of the comics some tech priests find a stasis vault containing a man of iron and they try to free it. An inquisitor finds out about it and blows up the entrance, killing all but one tech priest. the man of iron revives the tech priest, reprograms him and then hard wires the techno-fetishist into itself because it was lonely, basically he was the Lennie of robots(probably designated L3nn13). There was a man of iron which had uploaded itself into a cybernetic eye and had bounced around from owner to owner for centuries. There is a fan theory that at least one arc mechanicus is a man of iron.

As a follow up on the whole men of iron not being slaves of chaos there was a sequel to the black stone fortress novel that has UR-025 meet a demon engine. UR hold a kindship toward it however he had to kill it because it was loyal to chaos and as UR tell chaos is too self destructive. He also mention that what the Men of Iron empathies the most is autonomy.
