Great coach. His last Kiev team and their quick transitions made me fall in love with football. Massively underrated. Really wished they’d won the champions league in the late 90s.

Should\could have won it in 87 as well, easily the best team in Europe 86-87.

Great analysis. Really interesting, its a shame his legacy isn’t as well known across Europe.

Lobanovsky was a great man, as a person and pioneer. His diploma in Kiev Polytechnic university was devoted to physics, major in high temperature physics. He had created three great teams Dynamo Kiev 76, 86, 97. National SU teams based on DK players. I whish we could call those teams great by achievements, unfortunately they haven't won WC, EC, CC, although were able to do it.

As a Soviet kid in the 80s I’m still sore about the Belgium game at the 86 WC. Only FIFA would put linesmen from the US in a game with the Soviet team. That team deserved better. They played Platini’s France to a draw and demolished Hungary and Canada. 88 Euros was another heartbreak. That insane Van Basten goal I’ll never forget

Other than his Wikipedia page I found Jonathan Wilson's book 'Behind the Curtain' gave a real insight to his career and provided a real context to the football he was playing at the time.

Is he klopp's inspiration? I know sacchi played important role in his development but this man's ideas are somewhat similar to what Klopp is now doing at liverpool

One of the best european Coaches ever. Sad that he spend most of his time behind the iron courtain and so many people dont know much about him. Guys like Sacchi copied his tactics and get famous for inventing them.

I disagree concerning the suggestion whereby he failed to achieve on the international stage. International football during the mid 80's to early 9p's saw complex different approaches, techniques and styles. Lobanivski by definition did not secure a tournament trophy. The 1986 team, like others competed altitude similar to the Mexican competitors. Russia achieved primarily because of the "system underlying" the "whole as greater than the sum of its parts'". Also, compellingly a team of beauty beyond sporadic moments. Some of the prowess on maximising the new style balls, the thin air, and the heat Iin shooting accuracy was simply unmatched by other squads with such regularity...precision...obviously 1988 Euros they were undone (in the final) by van Basten who scalped everyone in the competition

In 1986 reaching the Quarter finals was effectively a dead heat fir runners up in that tournament Then Diego established a couple or more benchmarks. By then everyone had enjoyed themselves...and we're happy to be bystanders
