Isolation is used in UK secondary schools as a sanction for poor behaviour.
Our Young People's Advisory Group (YPAG) said we should look at how discipline in secondary schools, including isolation, affects young people's mental health and wellbeing.
So we developed a research project with them, the Behaviour in Schools Study. As part of it, our YPAG members conducted interviews with young people aged 13-18. Interviewees spoke about the particularly negative impacts of isolation on their mental health.
This animation is based on those interviews. It is not any one young person's story, but pulls together common elements from many young peoples' experiences. The words were those spoken by our interview participants.
