I have a 2010 W212 E550 with every factory option literally. I have not had any issues so far other than a misdiagnosed air line crack, that cost me two rear airbags. But now they are new and the line leak is solved. I have a eurocharged stage 1 tune and this car absolutely rips. Muffler delete and resonator delete, xpipe install... K&Ns and is NA. NA 5.5l is so insane. Most reliable thing ive ever owned. I bought it with 44000kms and it now has 78000kms in a few years, all driven hard.... I love it. I'm putting it in storage for the winter because I cant bring myself to put it through another winter because I want to own this car forever. Literally. Nothing like this on the road now.

100%!! The 5.5 NA is a beast and sounds fantastic. Ultra reliable with regular care. With the tune and goodies you’re probably pushing 420ish or so, which is plenty for the E. At 126k I burn 0 oil and pulls like a train. The turbos are the only thing I’m worried about long term but, we’ll cross that bridge when we come to it. German muscle is the best muscle

I sold my 2010 E350 a month ago and I still regret doing this. Great car! However, it was with fairly few options and the "smaller" engine and didn't think it is worth it spending money to modifications and upgrades. Only problem I had was with the bearings of the transfer case, watch out for them. That is why I am now waiting for my 2010 E550 to be delivered. This is why you try to spend the extra money for a 40-60 miles car right off the rip. Luxury mechanics always say, never buy one after 100k. My boss is this Russian guy with two G Wagons and a collection of old black Mercedes. He was firm about telling me to avoid a turbo for this exact reason. Fun fact.. for some reason the Russian guys like me so I call myself “the machine” 😂. If you want to tune an old car and put the pedal to it, that’s understandable but things will break. Like they say, gotta pay the cost to be the boss. Makes you feel better, I’m on my third porsche and they’re even worse. I’ve never had a repair don’t that was under $2k. I bought an old 911 once and spent $12k just doing a bunch of maintenance and repairs to make it daily roadworthy.

Yeah the engine choice has a lot to do with it. There are plenty of options that would be a great buy over 100k. @mrapter7
@mrapter7 Жыл бұрын
It’s a 4.7 in these cars - they are actually the parent motor for what the 5.5 is based off of. They share about 90% of major parts and components. Larger bore and stroke, slightly different turbos, forged internals, lightweight rotating mass etc. AMG took the m278 and used it to create the m157, one of the few times the AMG motor wasn’t purely AMG derived. So, they have *the same* issues and drawbacks. I can’t think of one the m278 has inherently that the m157 doesn’t or vice versa

I would be worried about the rattle, it’s not something to ignore, believe me. Either means a timing chain is unhealthy or your cam gears are out of phase and your cams are off timing slightly, could cause wear overtime and reduce performance. Doesn’t really matter if it’s updated if it’s loose and slapping against the timing cover when you start it up. If it’s not that common, it may actually be an adjuster potentially. Chain tends to be eventually pretty consistent. Tensioners are worn, so chain is loose. Chain won’t break, sure, but you increase your chances for timing skipping a tooth on one of the cam gears. I wouldn’t ignore it
@mrapter7
@mrapter7 Жыл бұрын
Which, my old engine had rattle at 110k. For 110k it had no checkvalves for oil and starved the top end on start up all that time, causing that chain rattle + additional wear. If you’re over 100k I would HIGHLY recommend popping the valve covers to see if your cams are healthy.

😂Hi man great video n just wanna add my bit about running costs 😳 I’m in the UK so have a diesel E350 2012 facelift version with 37k miles, 7g 268bhp, 457lb torque for the mid range punch and amazing mpg. Fuel here 🇬🇧 as of Sept 2022 is $9.16 a gallon The SAM unit failed and cost over $1,000.00 bucks to replace at a MB specialist. MB UK wanted far more ☹️ Apparently whatever dick head designed it decided to place the SAM unit in the front wing where it becomes damaged with water ingress 😠 The brake hose needed replacing and MB UK wanted over $1,000.00 bucks to take off the rear axel to replace the hose! 😳 WTF! MB specialist charged $300 bucks without taking the axel off! Just under $1,000.00 bucks for 4 x Michelin Pilot tyres So it’s a fantastic car and remember it’s only covered 37k miles but deffo not cheap to run, but then is that the same said for a BMW, Audi or heaven help u a Porsche 🤔 Watch out for the rear sub frame bushings as this is a $3,000.00 PLUS job to do 😳 And the biggest laugh of them all is my daily driver is a 2003, 190,000 miles TDi Golf which just cost me $500 bucks for a major service and repairs 😆 Oh yeah and 2 tyres @ $40 bucks each 😆 All the best 🇬🇧🇺🇸😎

You are lucky that your subframe is covered by MB! Trust me I got eye all over mine! Sourcing one from the UK soon to get it replaced within the next year. You definitely need to pay to play - most of the stuff I mentined is deferred maintenance and 100k + items. With 125k on it now, runs like a dream! What you listed doesn’t even seem that bad for maintenance. You also need to remember time is a killer sometimes more than miles. 37k miles over 10 years seems like it didn’t get much action, these cars need to be driven! SAM units are 2-350 USD over here, and should be a DIY fix, but you got the right idea with a quality Indy. I wouldn’t of dared but money like this into my previous cars (Buicks, GM products as I sold for GM) because they weren’t worth it. I’m still in love with my w212!

BE THANKFUL, DUDE! I bought a 2007 E550 from a low ball scammer. I blame myself. It has the balance shaft issue. Gotta tear it apart and replace the balance shaft sprocket which is a bad design. This car eats gas! Not cool. One must PAY to play. I get 26.7 mpg on the freeway, around town more like 5mpg with out a lead foot. Set staggered wheel base. EXPENSIVE to buy tires, no matter how you try to cut corners. $1200 to $1800 per set. I can name many other items that must be replaced that will keep your time on this car! how can you tell if the issue is the chain tensioner or cam adjuster? Looking at a potential car, and it rattles on startup for a good 5-10 seconds and then it stops.
@mrapter7
@mrapter7 Жыл бұрын
If it sounds more like a rattle than a tapping, that’s usually the sign. If you want, take the oil cap off, keep it close to the hole so it doesn’t spray oil, but give it a little space. Have someone Turn on the car, if it sounds louder and is coming from the oil fill location, then its chain. You’ll also hear this clunking or knocking sound of its an adjuster. Chain / tensioners are VASTLY more common than the adjusters. It’s about a $2k fix from a good independent mechanic. If it hasn’t had the work done yet, and is making the noise, consider the miles & how long it may be having that issue. You could use the repair estimate as leverage for getting a great deal.

A standard 212? Yes absolutely. This engine? Not really. Early versions are pretty short lived unfortunately. I’d also like to say that working DIY on this engine and how tight things are, and special tools you might need, it’s a little different than an older e550 or regular 350. Overall yeah it’s just a car, everything else about it is simple. I have a buddy of mine with a single bay garage do all my normal maintenance like brakes, tires, suspension etc. I bring it to specialists for the engine and driveline stuff. I’m not mechanic myself outside of spark plugs and oil changes, the odd brake job. But, I’m super limited on time so it is what it is.

Not really true with these platforms. Stage 1 tune has been run on some of these engines for over 100k miles with no real issues. With no hardware mods needed, the tune is well within Mercedes own specs. This engine is extremely under tuned from the factory. Can’t have the e class have more power than a s class or sl with the same engine. Can’t also have it produce almost the same or more than a 63. And the 63 can be extremely safely tuned to 700+ hp and be as reliable as stock. That being said, there were issues with this motor when I bought it that didn’t surface (and I didn’t check on and didn’t really know as much as I do now, hence the KZbin channel to share my experience) My new engine had 42k miles and has been tuned since it was put in. As long as heat is in check on these, you’re fine. Reliability aside, it’s a killer platform for cheap power
