When I was a Ph.D. student in the applied maths department at Liverpool University in the mid 1980s, one of the weekly seminars was given by an invited speaker from the Proudman Oceanographic Institute on the Wirral. His hobby was travelling round the world to film tidal bores. He'd been as far as China to film the bore on the Yangtze, but it was only later that he discovered that his local river, the Mersey, also had a bore. He'd somehow managed to hire a helicopter to hover above the Runcorn Gap to film the bore from above. His talk included a brief mathematical explanation of how to predict tidal bores, but mainly it was clips of film of actual bores around the world. The subject of his talk may have been bores, but it was the least boring talk I heard in my three years as a Ph.D. student.

Thank you that was fascinating! It really is still such an unknown science trying to predict this phenomenon that sometimes the old fashioned gut reaction is the only way to figure out when they might happen! Amazing to see though and glad someone put me onto this as I wouldn’t have known either this happened on the Mersey.

Great day. I was standing next to you when you filmed the bore. I then went upstream and saw the bore again at fiddler's ferry.

@@pauljones401Hi Paul yes I saw it again at fiddler's ferry. I then went further upstream and saw it yet again as it passed under a bridge

Aw thanks bud!! That’s really kind! There is a walk coming from this film too but it would have been a bit much to do both in one film! Paul

They have one on the river ouse that people surf on for miles, I think it's only once or twice a year
@pauljones4013 жыл бұрын
They are just something that you just have to run from. Or surf! But I’d be terrified frankly! Thanks for that heads up and love your handle!!! Paul

How many times during a year does a Tidal Bore happen on the River Mersey.
