The Mess That Is Early Modern Europe (1500 - 1700s) Explained: A Complete Overview

Early Modern Europe delves into an often overlooked period of European history, the time between the end of the Middle Ages and the French Revolution.
We will go over the significant events of this period, starting with social life, the invention of the printing press, and the spread of the Renaissance out of Italy and the forms it took across the Alps. We then delve into how this led to the Reformation, first in Germany with Luther, and then in Switzerland with Zwingli and Calvin. We visit Tudor England under Henry VIII, Queen Elizabeth I and the English Reformation. The Catholic Church responds with the Counter Reformation and stunning Baroque Art styles emerge.
The Reformation leads into a series of Wars of Religion from the mid 1500s to mid 1600s. We go over the wars in France, the Spanish wars against the Dutch, the Wars of the Three Kingdoms in the British Isles, and finally the devastating Thirty Years War. There are also parts about social and economic change, focusing on the rise of mercantilism and the Witch Hunts.
This leads into the Age of Absolutism, marked by the reign of Louis XIV in France in the late 1600s. We go over 3 of his wars, with a focus on the War of Spanish Succession.
We end with a brief look at the new European powers of the 1700s, the Prussians, Austrians, and Russians.
It is the 2nd episode of our Early Modern series, which goes over the history of the world from roughly 1500 to 1800. The 1st episode dealt with the Age of Discovery.

Welcome to Early Modern series of the World History Summarized project! The entire project is meant to summarize broad topics in history and balances political history and events, with social/daily life, and culture. If you've watched our History of the World documentary, the project is a perfect next step. The videos are standalone, but presented in a chronological fashion. 50:16 The story of the Pilgrims is a bit different than told here. First, in 1609, this group of rather zealous religious, puritan people fled England via Amsterdam to Leiden in the more religiously liberal Dutch Republic as they felt persecuted in England for their religion. They founded a church in Leiden, when they moved there to escape the conflicts in Amsterdam between English refugees already there. Then after some 11 years in Leiden, where they kept away from other English religious groups in Leiden led by reverent Robert Dury because they found them not puritan enough, they decided to leave Leiden for the New World, basically because they found Leiden too regiously liberal. In the colonies they hoped to be no longer bothered by other religious groups they simply couldn't stand. They were the ultimate religious hypocrites.

Great job! Summarizing Early Modern history couldn't have been easy. A couple of well-meant critiques, because this channel seems worth the effort. They're minor: 1) Is that a real narrator? Sounds AI. When you can, hire a real person to read. Though I must say, great job on some of these pronunciations. 2) The ending was abrupt. I would have liked a general, not too opinionated, overview of how Early Modern grew from what came before, and how it influenced the Age of Revolutions that came later. History does include analysis. Other than that, thumbs up!

You know most of recorded history, until we adopted a strict scientific method to try removing as much bias as possible & help them recognizing bias by past authors, whether it was unintentional personal beliefs influencing a previous historians work, or whether it's intentional bias by those in charge wanting to use intentionally biased works to indoctrinate citizens, while justifying their horrific behaviors and actions towards the peoples they conquered. Trying to "other" them as outsiders & make them appear as lesser beings, savages, and other negative stereotypes, indoctrinating their citizens to believe their civilized society is preordained by God to conquer these lesser people, in order to civilize these savages, and spread the word of God to peoples who've never heard the gospel. But these are all fake, biased information found in early history books, and early journals, not meant to record first hand accounts as accurately as possible, these are intentionally biased writings trying to influence the thinking of their own citizens, having them believe their doing something good for these different indigenous societies, rather than knowing their government is creating atrocities, slavery, and genocide of different people groups who don't have the same level of weapon technology to defend themselves. This has been a common example of what almost every empire & invader, throughout human history has done, use history as propaganda. But today's academic historians are usually held to a code of ethics, attempting to create an accurate account, while using the scientific method to be aware of as much bias as possible, and remove as much bias as possible before publishing their work in a scientific journal, or magazine that holds authors to an ethics code So future generations will have a reliable & accurate historical account, that attempts to remove any intentional or unintentional bias from creeping into the works. Also trying to stop dishonest people who pull snippets & quotes out of context, to share with their followers, and get an emotional rise from their biased audience who stay stuck in an echo chamber, but never checking the sources or first hand accounts, where they pulled the out of context quotes, making it appear your scholarly historical accounts support their personal ideology. And spreading false info all over the Internet, ten times faster than a post debunking these false claims. Like they say, the winners get to write the history books. And they make themselves appear totally justified in their actions against supposed "barbaric & savage" peoples, who they claim attacked them while they were on a peaceful diplomatic mission attempting to open a two way dialogue, or establish a treaty opening trade between these two groups. Often, falsely claiming in their accounts that these lesser technologically developed peoples, tried to use an unjust surprise attack to kill everyone in their peaceful diplomatic mission. So they were forced to retaliate to save their lives, ships, and goods they relied on . Making it seem like these violent people's were trying to wipe everyone out so they could take all the ships, weapons and various goods for themselves. And making it appear that these "violent peoples" are lacking the experience to understand that peaceful trade, and diplomatic missions, with colonials would have been a better long-term option for peacefully gaining access to new technologies, better weapons, more foods & alcohol from various countries around the world. While never admitting to their own people that they are actually conquering these newly discovered people & claiming control over their lands, oppressing them into submission , while they extract & ship home as much resources & wealth they're able to strip from the conquered lands and peoples. And if the people didn't have the type of wealth Europeans valued, like silver & gold, then they would turn the people themselves into a form of value by putting them into bondage, selling them into slavery, or working them to death as forced labor. Building the infrastructure colonials needed to efficiently extract all the wealth & resources as fast as possible. All the whole writing propaganda to influence the people back home. Attempting to appear as if they are helping these people, rather than showing first hand accounts of them committing various atrocities against people all around the world.

The influence of the Dutch Revolt / 80 years war on Europe is rather undersold in this documentary, if you ask me. And the wars on the British Isles (three kindoms, Cromwell) rather oversold. It was basically the Dutch Republic's model of government (also lead by Prince William of Orange as Stadtholder) and division of power assigned by the highest authority in the land (the States-General in the Dutch Republic and Parliament in England) to the Stadtholder of the Republic / King of England that was implemented in England under William and Mary. The idea a ruler should serve his people well, instead of the other way around comes directly from the Dutch declaration of independence (Act of leaving, 1581) and arguably inspired both the French Revolution and the American declaration of independence. The Dutch Republic leadership also wasn't based on divine power, but by elections in the States-General (which at the time obviously was mainly populated by nobility, some religious figures and rich merchants. This video is full of reasons to quit Christianity but not the basic teachings of Jesus of Nazareth. My own conversion to Buddhism 53 years ago was based on what I saw at church and how it translated into the life I lived as a child with my parents. They were penitent and generous at church and then turned on me and my siblings perpetrating unutterable crimes. The disconnect was so great I began to follow the Dharma after having researched Buddhism as an assignment at boarding school. The Buddha's teachings are clear, simple, and make practical sense. I learned to meditate and began my journey along the Eightfold Path. There are practical solutions and clear remedies to be found in the Dharma, things that a child can understand very easily. In contrast, the more I learned about the Christian faith the less I saw of any value. Jesus of Nazareth was a gifted healer and teacher of love and compassion and is considered among Buddhists to be Bodhisattva or an enlightened being. Those who follow His teachings are whom I call "true" Christians, without the trappings of everything in this video: the Vatican, indulgences, the concepts of Heaven and Hell, the ideas of transubstantiation and prohibition of having direct contact with the Eternal. Only priests who were either as corrupt as their church teachers or entered the priesthood without knowledge of the evil flowing out of today's Vatican and Christian practice, distorted to encourage the giving of alms to the church and the sale of indulgences, a concept I find utterly abominable, had a direct line to God. There is a comparison that is very easy to see between Roman Catholicism and Buddhism. The Pope travels on his own plane, paid by worshipers around the world. He has a fleet of ground transport vehicles that are flown in a separate custom aircraft that is purpose-built for large vehicles, including something that is referred to as "the popemobile". The Pope is completely inaccessible to the lay believer. Contrast the luxuries inherent in being Pope with the life of His Holiness the Dalai Lama. He flies economy class on commercial airlines and takes either a taxi or rides with a volunteer upon touching down at His destination. He accepts gifts freely given and never pressures anyone for money. though He does give paid appearances funded by the audience attendees. It is also possible for someone like me or you to make an appointment with Him for a private audience without charge. The contrast is breathtaking. I prefer the latter. My sister, an Episcopalian Deacon, has told me that, because of my beliefs, I'll be going straight to Hell when I die. She is a woman who has been denied the priesthood, has a son who is a convicted felon and perjured herself in court sending an innocent man to prison for five years. When she told me this, she had no remorse for what she had done and worried only that she would be prosecuted for perjury as well as having her law licence revoked. My own life isn't perfect. I have served as a Registered Nurse, five years of which was in critical care. I still have my license and continue to practice when called upon in the senior housing facility where I live. This is my 54th year of nursing practice. I ask the reader to compare and make their own choices.

But less than ("...nearly ...") 40,000 titles with ten million copies suggests about 250 to 300 copies per title - one per library - including Royal and Ecclesiastical libraries - and a few extra for the (very few) private scholars who were extremely interested in the particular subject - and successful enough to be able to afford the price. OK - 'twas cheaper (and MUCH better than) a manuscript copy - but still quite pricey.

As for the reference toJesuits fighting Protestantism in Eastern Europe, that occured only in the former Russian and Soviet Empires in what is now Belorus. Most of the Jesuit activity in that area was dedicated to aiding invasions and regimes that attacked and persecuted Eastern Orthodoxy. For the record, Orthodoxy isn't a heresy even according to Roman Catholic beliefs at that time.

those chronological historical divisions are artificial and misleading . Each country has a different pace of change and particularities that no other country has. Swtzerland is a good example of a country whose history does not fit in any of the traditional models. Netherlands also is very unique, and so are the scandinavian countries. France seems to be the model for the traditional chronogical division of history, but no other country fits in those model as well as France.

Today the English monarchy is an expensive anachronism. Charles owned the entirety of Cornwall before becoming King and made millions from the land. Not only did he not pay business taxes but he did not even have to tell we the people how much he made per year !! It is obscene to be anyone's subject in the 21st century, let alone in the home of parliamentary democracy and law itself .

Quite a fancy view of Europe. But not exactly the point of view of all Europe. It seems very far from the reality of South Europe imo. It seems too positive. I look forward to the history of human creation which I believe makes more logical sense then evolution. From what I have read white people have been mass produced on many islands throughout history the last was late 1700s to early 1800s at Coney island and other islands outside of New York corresponding with the worlds fair.

The religious split in Early Modern Europe is described as a division between Protestant and Catholic regions. Why does it ignore the Eastern Orthodox churches of Greece, Russia (the western part of which is in Europe), and what are now Ukraine, Serbia, Georgia, Romania, Moldova, etc.? In fact, there are (and were) many more Orthodox Christians than Protestants in Europe. This continues a sad disregard and ignorance of a massive part of Europe by western Europeans who wrote the histories that are now way out of date. Update your sources.

Far too much centered around events in (what is now) Great Britain. The continent is just hanging in there. English-speaking historians all suffer from this lack of attention to the rest and pretend that England has always been the center of history. As an example: the events in the Low Countries get 2 minutes, but I think that has had a lot more influence on history than the fuss between a few churches in Scotland.

Catherine of Aragon was not Arthur’s ex-wife. There was no divorce (or annulment). She was Arthur’s widow. If she’d been Arthur’s ex-wife, there would have been no basis for Henry’s claim that he’d married Arthur’s wife, and he couldn’t have married Anne Boleyn. Not using that excuse, anyway. Also, Henry’s creation of the Church of England was not, technically, part of the Reformation. Henry had been a devout Catholic, and only separated from the RC church in order to put aside his wife. It happened during the Protestant Reformation, and was no doubt strengthened by the movement; but at first, was purely about Henry’s obsession with having a legitimate male heir.

Henry never was a DEVOUT Catholic. The thing he was devoted to was his own pleasure. And his splitting from is part of the Protestant Reformation - Anne Boleyn, Archscoundrel Cranmer and Thomas Cromwell all were Protestants, even if Henry was not.

How perfectly Christ Jesus illustrated the genuine Christians from the counterfeit Christians, and how they would be allowed to grow together until they could be clearly identified at harvest time, in his illustration of the weeds and the wheat, recorded at Matthew 13:24-30, 36-43. What a relief for the human family, when these wolves, these weeds, are soon destroyed by forces under the direction of the United Nations. Revelation 17: 1-7, 15-17 Revelation 18:4-24
