35 years ago as a teen I was casting my own Orc army thanks to a company called Prince August. They are still going and you can still get the moulds. Proper 80's health and safety, me melting salvaged lead into a crucible on my stove top then pouring it in to vulcanised rubber moulds held together with clamps and elastic bands. But in the end I had an Orc army and the scars to show for it!
@ThisMiniSucks6 ай бұрын
So awesome. I think I might need to attempt this as well. I’m down for the scars but not the lead 😅

Same thing here, to the year in fact. I used up all my savings to buy the fantasy molds at the time. But we cast in white metal, without lead, and underneath an extractor hood. Which seemed safe enough.. if you're not counting the fact that I had the burner and molds standing on several cracked asbestos tiles...
@TimRoot-dotcom6 ай бұрын
Very cool. I bought one of these off Ebay last year. The heater didn't work well on my used unit, but the little rubber molds are amazing. I use a candle and spoon to heat the metal and pour the molten metal into the little two-part molds. It took me some research to figure this out ... but the kit uses a safe bismuth-tin alloy called 281, which you can buy pretty cheap online.

Hey thank you so much! I was trying to figure out what to get for refills, that is super helpful!

I bought one of these on clearance back in the late 90s just to try out. It's actually pretty safe. When it's working correctly the lid locks in place while it's heating and you can't open it up until it's all cooled down. It's no more dangerous than an Easy Bake Oven or a Creepy Crawlers set unless you have an applehead kid who doesn't listen. At the time I was trying my hand at sculpting minis in green stuff and wanted to see what would go into molding and casting my sculpts. I figured this would be a cheap way to try it out before investing in more serious equipment (which I never did, lol). This thing is actually a MUCH safer version of the old Gilbert Kasting Kit which had every surface open to the world (and curious fingers) and came with plenty of good ol' fashioned lead!

@@ThisMiniSucksA few months ago there was a craft kit that seemed aimed at kids at one of the local craft stores kids project set isles. It was a cast your own chess set thing that supposedly included everything for casting more than 2 sets of pieces (probably so that there was definitely enough for a full board. Seems like it included a wooden chess board, felt pads for the pieces, and a pair of wipe over paint things to differentiate two sides (it was showing a brush over and wipe off thing similar to some of the oil painting paints for oil washes, but intended to tint the metal as well along with, supposedly, seal it). If it wasn't a basic chess set design, I might have grabbed it at the time, but the pieces shown on the box were more of the standard, cheap set look

OMG the memories and the scars to match. I spent an entire summer late 80's melting white metal and sometimes but not often scrap lead, using vulcanised moulds and latex self made moulds (thank you prince august) an entire french and british Napoleonic army set. Literally hundreds of models that my friends and I than sat and painted and spent many many hours of fun engaged in war.

25mm was standard scale for most RPG miniatures up to the '90s. Warhammer was an exception at the time with their larger 32mm figures. Scale creep has led modern figures to be closer to 28mm or larger (what the industry calls "Heroic" scale), but tabletop grids are still 25mm, which is close to 1 inch.
