There are some movies from the 30s and 40s which tried out historical techniques for arming swords and longswords. A good example for this is the final fight of Knights of the Round Table from 1953: kzbin.info/www/bejne/pJXNZHx5o8yVjaM . It's in no way perfect but in my opinion it's great for a time in which most medieval fencing treatises weren't published in high circulation numbers. P. S. : I would love to see a review of this fight! :D
@JustGrowingUp846 жыл бұрын
Oh god, I've seen that movie! It was fun, but mainly because of how silly it was. It's no wonder that people now think of knights as clumsy oafs... Although this fight is silly , it's not too bad. The earlier one between Arthur and Lancelot was hilarious!
@isabellavonneissenau84176 жыл бұрын
TheFilthyCasual I think we have to consider the time of this movie. In this fight we see two historical techniques whereas the first reprints of historical manuals are from the 1960s onwards (starting in 1965 with Martin Wierschin's publications). It would be interesting to know who choreographed this fight and knew of these techniques in 1953.

About the gaining reach with a different grip holding, one thing which is actually done in Katori Shinto-ryu is thrusting or cutting with the left hand only while taking away your right leading hand (just like Di Grassi does with the greatsword). In this tradition, it's said "cutting with one hand is gaining 6in of reach". It's not exactly like what was talked about, going away from the guard in the regular two-handed grip, but there's that. Aslo, kiaïjutsu is just great for breathing and at first building confidence. I know several people who were very shy and it helped them a lot to be able and taught to shout while fencing. In kendo, with all the target naming, it's taken maybe a little bit too far away from a practical budo perspective, nonetheless kiaï is terrific. Of course it scares the neighbors and make their kids laugh but flailing training swords around already does so...

I'm a fencer(see pfp). I fence foil and my coach places a huge emphasis on recovering after an attack. In fact, we have many drills that center on an explosive attack and quick recovery. Also in competition if you don't recover quickly, you will get hit by the riposte.

You just happen to casually bring up two things I've been pondering lately. The main one is sideswords; it comes up every so often as a point of reference of hilt evolution for other swords, but how does one compare to later straight sabres like the Patton? Is there a reason other than fashion or tradition that militaries straightened a sabre to allow thrusts vs switching to a double-edged, swept hilt sidesword? The other (and this one is more theoretical) is using an extremely low grip, which I've wondered about the katana, actually, as it actually balance out in reach with a sabre when gripped at the lowest most point. The balance would be terrible, but I have heard of a technique existing of performing a "surprise" lefthand thrust to make use of extra reach, which, with Samurai mainly being calvary archers then moving on to slashing pole arms, could the extra long tsuka be to allow that use from horseback while retaining a shorter blade for carry among civilians? Then again, I also ponder if it was merely because they really like strong two-handed chops or just wanted to match the asymmetrical ratio of their yumi longbow, lol Anyway, I've grown quite interested in sideswords all a sudden and, due to the nature of it being a modern term for a wide range of swords, haven't really seen much content on it. I hear it lends well to both rapier (though the point isn't as agile) and sabre (though the lighter tip likely doesn't cut as well) styles while also possibly pairing with a buckler, so was it just too much of a jack-of-all-trades to remain fashionable?
@grimmriffer6 жыл бұрын
Someone describing kendo scoring to me described a slightly nebulus concept where a point is only awarded if the exchange that led to it was "good". I'd that definition of good includes being prepared to defend (or actually managing to defend) a riposte to a point then kendo rules would also be addressing the after blow..?

I was wondering...I'm from Hungary and there are quite a few schools here that are more focused on the shall we call "steppe nomad" way and recreations of the infamous Black Army of Mathias way of fighting and using their weapons...what I cannot seem to find is any practice with flails. I know it wasn't the most popular weapon throughout history, but do you have any information on techniques or way to practice safely with them. I think the latter is the real issue, I can think of soft materials to manufacture some practice flails but that won't be anywhere similar to a real one in weight and the recovery is very different on a missed attack. Any info would be much appreciated. :)

Somebody totally needs to start a GoFundMe or Kickstarter to get funds to create a HEMA (KZbin) con, a convention featuring all of our favorite historical arms and armor KZbinrs. Invited Skall, Lloyd, Raph, Matt, Shad, ThegnThrand (and others) and give them each a 1/2 hour to an hour for a panel on whatever they want, then, maybe on the last day, have a panel with all of them in the same room for a panel. I'd also allow them each one table I the dealers room so that they can sign autographs and/or sell merchandise. It would be epic, but alas, I have neither the money nor the organizational skills to pull this off, otherwise I'd do it myself.
