This is a fantastic video. I admit I didn’t even know about Métis Fiddle or culture. I live in Louisiana and I am very Milyer with Cajun fiddling. I just listened to several Montana mystery novels written by a Peter Bowen with the main character Gabriel, a Métis Who is a champion fiddler. It reminds me a lot of the Cajun Fais dodo dances. In any case, thank you for doing this all those many years ago. A quick Google and your video came up. Merci beaucoup from down here on the Bayou

It is a joy to hear you play, Trent. Congratulations. Also liked Ry's accompaniment. I am an old time & buegrass fiddler from North Carolina.

You, sir, are a true inspiration. It's clear how much passion you have for music, and you play that fiddle like it's going out of style. Which, thanks to guys like you, it never will. Thank you for sharing this unique piece of Métis and Canadian culture, and making it so accessable. Salut de Vancouver de Nord! Keep 'em coming.

I just got home from the John Arcand Fiddle Festival in Saskatchewan and LOVED every minute of the Metis style. I'm catching on to the chording style...slowly! And I'm determined to learn the footwork! Thanks for sharing this!!!!

Very good. Down here in the southeastern United States we play that "Devil's Waltz" as well--mostly fiddlers but many banjoists also. Never heard it called that before, however, most down here call it "Rye Whiskey," "Jack of Diamonds" or "Drunken Hiccups."

You are AMAZING! I play a lot of that metis style too apparently. I mean the more rhythmic asmpect you spoke of. I have been trained as a bluegrass fiddler, but I always seemed to find myself adding more of the rhythm like the Metis. I just never knew it was actually called something else. And I'm gonna try that Metis tuning now too.

watch?v=cc-WGo4N8h8 Even the tuning is the same (called troll tuning in Norwegian). The tune Devil's Waltz feels very similar to the Fanitullen I linked, both in the pizzicato, as well as the dancy feel. Further interesting is that Fanitullen translates roughly to Devil's Tune, I suppose it wouldn't be too much of a stretch to figure Norwegian ships would have docked in Canadian ports...
