As a frequent BART rider, the first time I stepped on to DC Metro it felt so familiar but also like an alternate reality. I assume MARTA would be the same way.

When both systems began in the 1970's the format of their original paper tickets was similar. BART tickets had the "ba" logo on it and the original Metro tickets featured the US Capitol Dome. They looked liked they could be used in each other's turnstyles but I'm sure they would have been rejected.

Thanks for showcasing those unique coffered-ceiling-and-wall underground stations, designed by the architect Harry Weese. Love watching the the shadows come and go as the trains pull in and out. Some observations: Too bad the chocolate-brown livery wasn't continued on the new cars, but at least the color was kept on the ends. Cushioned seats! Don't see those on US rapid transit trains anymore. And, the need to put two little "exit" signs on the car doors- really?

Grew up in Alexandria VA and the DC metro is a HUGE part of my childhood. Back in the early 90’s my mom and I were traveling to New Jersey to visit family for Thanksgiving. We were at the Metro at the Old Town/King St. stop in Alexandria and I accidentally got on the train without my mom! I was so scared and crying. I knew we would ride the yellow line to gallery place where we would transfer to the red line and head to union station. So instead of getting off at the next stop (Braddock Rd) and waiting for my mom, I ride the train all the way to gallery place. Luckily a kind stranger helped me connect with my mom. We were still on time for our train to Jersey and I had a great story for my cousins! 😊

Beginning September 9, 2022 at 9 pm the Yellow Line will be closed for reconstruction of the section between L’Enfant Plaza and Pentagon stations. The line will resume operations on Memorial Day weekend in 2023. The section of the Blue Line south of Reagan Airport is being closed for six weeks this fall to perform final tie in work for the Potomac Yards station.

The first time I was in W. DC was in July of 73 and there was construction everywhere. This system has to be the most beautiful Subway in the country; if not the world.

Great video. I couldn't see all the car numbers as they were zipping along so quickly. Still when I could see a number they were all in the 3000 series. Are they the oldest cars still in service?
@jacorp7476 Жыл бұрын
No, they also still have 2000 series trains in service, but they are planning to replace those and the 3000 series with the 8000 series by 2025 and 2029, respectively (according to Wikipedia)

Why is it so empty although the network seems to be quite extensive?
@TheMansfieldBusGuy2 жыл бұрын
Mostly because of the Pandemic ridership dropped in 2011 Ridership Peaked at Around 750K daily riders. Ridership is coming back slowly is around 200K as of June 30th 2022.

As big and accessible metro is, us locals hate it because of the constant shut downs for maintenance, high wait times, and the cost. Unlike every other city in the world that charges one price, ours depends on the day of the week, time of the day, how far your going, if it’s a holiday, etc. So it can be anywhere from $1-$8 but you never know. It used to be great but that’s no longer the case.
