Cohen has plenty of wealth to spread around a bit... I wish he hadn't sprinkled some on the Rangers before he tossed some leftovers the Astros' way personally, but hey... we'll take it. This enabled Crane to suck it up and pay Verlander SOME of that big contract. You know, the one he wouldn't match during free agency in the offseason when the Mets lured JV away with the big bux.

Lindor and Alonso feelings? Let's be honest they can't even hit .240 they are part of the problem. Pete's focused to much on hitting homeruns instead of being a hitter. I’m in LA and every report I’ve seen and heard about Ohtani says he wants to stay on the west coast. He could have chosen the Yankees if he wanted NY but he doesn’t. Also, both the pitchers they traded are in their 40s, they needed to win now and they don’t have the lineup to do it so I don’t think they had much choice.

As a long time Mets fan, I don’t understand all the outrage over the trades. I agree with the outrage over the season, it is a complete mess. But at this point why not deal two 40 year old pitchers, a 37 year old reliever and two minor parts (Pham and Canha). Cohen will be spend and we can turn this around quickly, but none of those guys are part of the future anyway.

These are the steps to rebuild: 1. If the weakest link in the chain is the Bullpen forget having a clown car filled with subpar pitchers! It is time to demand of pitchers to go 8 or 9 innings! Have a small BP like it used to be. Pitchers are the most important defensive position and we downgrade the position each pitching change at an ever more critical point in the game. Aren't we supposed to upgrade defense the later it gets? 2., Focus & work on fundamentals NOT hitting HR's. Base-running, stealing and getting aggressive on the base paths. This makes a team more drought resistant, creates energy and elevates and energizes every aspect of the game. Loosens up the team and tightens up and unnerves the opposition. 3. No more ridiculous Free agent contracts. They seldom work and then you are saddled with a player you do not want. Pay the guys who grew up in your system and keep them if they are great players. This breeds good will and a sense of belonging and family which creates a good team feeling. Too many comings and goings this year made the players not care about the Mets as they were focusing more on themselves. We need to instill Mets fandom in the players. After a horrible year- it behooves us to stand back and consider our mistakes and see the opportunity ahead by correcting the mistakes. Maybe we will have an edge on other teams who have not yet figured out what we have.

NY fans have an issue of this win now win now only, instead of building a foundation for the future, they talked so much crap when jets were building for future, and now look where jets are. we have a owner with big bucks, he can go after free agents anytime, but its more important to build the younger prospects, and to fill gaps when the core is built we can go after free agents then, to complete the team, but not now, while we still need to build our young core.

I’m genuinely curious to know, how do you feel about losing those prospects for Verlander? Not that this is indicative of anything, but I’ve seen a lot of Astros fans who are upset at losing them, even though you guys are getting Verlander at a premium.

@@newyorknewsjunkie8883it always hurts losing prospects but my thinking is the Astros hired a new GM who’s known for scouting. Hopefully with this draft class and the next couple we could at least have a respectable farm system. Also the window for the Astros is probably another couple years so you gotta do what you think is right to win

@@newyorknewsjunkie8883 I think most of the Astros fans saying that are just wanting something to bitch about, but... if there's any real regret in their hearts, it's that they think Verlander is about to fall off the table now that he's over age 40, so they think the Astros overpaid with those 2 prospects. Our farm system was already pretty dry, and now it's pretty much desert bone dry. But no, most Astros fans are happy to have JV back for another shot at the title in 2023 and 2024, esp with 3 of our starting pitchers out the first half of this season (Lance McCullers Jr... out all year, hasn't thrown a pitch... Luis Garcia... they (MLB) made him stop rocking the baby, he injured his elbow after a few weeks of his new pitching motion, he's out all year, TJ surgery... and Jose Urquidy... minor injury the day before or after Garcia, IIRC? at least he's almost back, but he was out like 6-8 weeks? ouch). Anyway, with all our SP woes, the RPs are being overused in the first 4 months of the season and cracks are starting to show in previously dependable arms. BUT... Some of our offensive player injuries are lightening up and we've gotten Altuve and Yordan back (still no sign of Uncle Mike, sadly)... so really, we just needed a bit of SP and RP help, and... in walks Verlander and Graveman. I say, let's give it a shot. But I'm not thinking this is gonna cure everything that ails the team in one week, tho.

I don't know why anybody with a thinking. Brain would be against what the mets did. Look, the Mets were going no place a lot of their players under achieved. So what do you do, you cut your losses? And they got some great prospects who could be the Stars of this team in the next couple of years. How could anybody be against that for a couple of 40 year olds? Yes, volander could still pitch, but he's forty years old. You have to always build for the future. This is not football. And the mets got terrific prospects. If the Mets did nothing and did not make the playoffs. Then where would we be at the end of the season? We would have none of these top prospects in our farm system which we have now. And I'll say it again for 2 forty year olds for crying out loud.

max just isn't a leader or great club house guy, was happy to watch him pitch mostly last year but glad he's gone, I think Verlander coulda been kept, only reason to validate trading Verlander is if you go all in on Ohtani, if you're rebuilding having a guy like ohtani would instantly give you someone to build around for the next 10 years

Well, whether it was intentional or not, Cohen has set up an even more epic Texas Rangers vs. Houston Astros August+September AL West crown chase, so... if nothing else, he's creating content across MLB. I know that's small comfort for Mets fans, but... oh well. I do hope the Mets get Ohtani. That would be cool on so many levels. Good luck!
@xKillZone99

@gfox9295 I agree with that, personally I don't think Ohtani leaves the Angel's, I feel like they won't risk him going to the open market, cause in the open market Cohen has the potential to outbid anyone, but if ohtani hits the open market and the mets decide they don't want him then the fans will without a doubt turn on the team and not support them.

I love you Joe, but you gotta admit they are looking to build for the future, they were not going to win with these veterans we had, it was only going to get worst when they got older. and then we would have to wait and have no assets to build the farm system. i think the mets are headed in the right direction, all i can say is compare them to when the jets signed Joe douglas, and finally started getting rid of the old guys, and build a young core through good draft picks, and look where they are now ready to contend, and still growing. The mets can be really great in a couple of years and great for many years to come, if they start building the team young from now. we are set at catcher i can say that!! first base alonso, SS lindor. 3B and 2B is up for grabs, unless mcneil plays one of those postions, you can put MCneil anywhere. outfield nimmo is set, and we can move mcneil out there, or get one of these younger guys to come up and play right field, and put mcneil in left, and get acuna at 2B. we got a ways to go to build out pitching again, but we are headed in right direction.

Don't be so quick to judge management. We weren't winning with these guys anyway. The plan was to win now while bolstering the farm system. Now that our plan has failed, go in a new direction, and focus on the prospects. We're building up the farm system, which needs to be top notch if we're going to compete year in and year out. You can't survive on free agents only. You must have the homegrown talent also. Cohen tried his best to buy us a playoff team Now, while retooling the farm. But it didn't work. Hey man, nothing ventured nothing gained. Developing players that can compete on this level is paramount. BTW don't write off next season so quickly.

Your comment is way too thoughtful, reasonable and measured to be on a forum like this. What's lost in all of this "highest payroll in baseball history" nonsense is that they're vastly overpaying for a number of older pitchers. Premier talent entering their primes doesn't hit the open market like it once did, with the exceptions of Judge and now Ohtani of course who both bet on themselves. If they had ANY viable young arms it would be a different story.
