2:41 "Russell Westbrook's midrange is there" He is a 38.5% midrange shooter for his career. The math simply does not support your views.

It’s just running the play , if the play is run correctly then you get the open shot that you want with the right player taking that shot. What I don’t understand is why they sag off that player like Draymond for instance they let him get an open pass , get up on him and make it a hard pass and blow up the play

Pressing up on Draymond will open up other things. Paint is now open and Dray can use his passing ability to create layups for the 4 other players. Steph can now backdoor on that 2 man game. Or Dray can simply drive past his man, or use a fake handoff to get to the rim.

Isn't the defender standing there waiting for you at the elbow? Wouldn't you be dribbling right into the defender? Isn't that the entire point of backing off of someone who cannot shoot 3s?

When you dribble at the guy at the elbow he has to slightly back up to respect the drive. When the player sees this it's the 1-2 speed stop pull-up jumper that they discussed at the elbow, which is like a layup, if a player works on it. If he doesn't back up at all it's an easy in-n-out blow-by into a finish around the rim. Or you could just pull-up top of the free throwarc.

@92anklebreaker I just watched the Caitlin Clark (Iowa) defensive setup. Clark was 2 feet behind the free throw line. There were at least 3 other defenders in the paint area. Clark was 12 to 15 feet off of her assignment. There would have been no reason to react to a drive into the midrange by backing up even further. Setting that aside, if an elbow jumpshot off the dribble is "like a layup", a three point shot with no one within 15 feet of you (and outright telling you that they are not going to contest at all) should be like an even easier layup. Nothing I said should be interpreted as an argument against mid range shots.

@@cmack17 sorry for the late reply, I don't get notifications of replies, just came back to re-listen and saw this. I didn't watch the game to have a comment or understanding on that specific situation. I was speaking in generalities which I would still maintain my stance with what I was saying. In the case of someone being at or under the free throw line and defenders in there as well, I would imagine that they wouldn't be able to closeout on my best 3 point shooter and hopefully there would be someone who could make that shot consistently on a team. I'm imagining a situation that they still could close out on a shooter. In that instance I would still take as much space as the defense gives me. If I drive and kick I ensure that they can't closeout to shooter. As well, idk the science on this but there is something about the ball coming from the rim to a shooter that seems to make it more likely that the ball will go in. Could be totally off here, but playing and coaching for a while , 3s off passes coming from the basket area seem to go in more often than top to wing passes or whatever. It would appear that there shouldn't be a difference between a 10 footer and 15 footer wide open, but I would still think the closer I can get to the hoop the higher chance I will put it in. With mid-range I and most I have seen elevate and release the ball at the top of our jump. I think this gets the ball even closer to the rim than a set shoot 3 and maybe that's why it feels like a layup for me. I would love to know what smarter basketball minds than myself would think about this. I also think as a general rule it is very hard to guard someone giving them space to run at you. People did this with rajon rondo a lot and he would take all of that space then make a pass forcing a tough closeout. I also think back to playing 21 or 1 on 1 with people that couldn't really guard or stay in front of and they would back up and dare me to shoot. When I exausted the space of where they are still off of me but I am as close to the rim as possible I would shoot. I don't want to go all the way to the rim and lose my advantage against someone taller but as close as I can get while still having space. I felt comfortable shooting from anywhere but the closer I got the higher my percentages were
