The Mighty Gabby ~ Chicken & Ram

"Anthony "Mighty Gabby" Carter (born 30 March 1948) is a legendary Barbadian calypsonian and a Cultural Ambassador for the island of Barbados. He is the youngest calypsonian to win the calypso crown in Barbados at age 19 in 1968 and went on to win the Calypso king title again in 1969, 1976, 1985, 1999, 2000 and again in 2010. He has penned over 700 songs and was awarded Folk Singer Of The Year in 1977, 1978, 1979
The "Mighty Gabby" has been writing and singing calypso music for over 40 years, and is known for his satirical songs criticizing politicians and cultural trends. He won the first ever Crop-Over road march title in 1979 with "Burn Mr. Harding" and again in 1982 with "Jack" (dah beach is mine). He received the 2005 Clement Payne National Hero Award and awarded the Living Legend Award at the first ever Barbados Music Awards in January 2006. He is a vocal Pan-Africanist.
Gabby's no-holds-bars lyrics drew criticism politicians who tried to stifle his expression."

I heard that song about 30 years ago when I went to Barbados in 1990. The internet did not exist then so I forgot about it. Today, for some reason, I heard it on the radio, I was happy and decide search it and found it. THANK YOU THIS IS SUCH A GOOD MEMORY.

For those that don't know the song references a scandal in Barbados at the time from a chicken farm owned by the infamous Ms. Ram. People who had worked there claimed that at times chickens that had died were plucked and sold anyway to local restaurants. This song and others like Pluck It from Red Plastic Bag were huge as Calypso and satire are a match made in heaven.

Love this tune, reminds me so much of my visit in 1989 particularly The Harbour Lights! and their all you drink for $10 nights, (Bet they don't do that any more!). I'm coming back on the 6th November for a few weeks, hope to hear it again, then this 61 year old cripple will be up and dancing with the rest!
