Great series, and Chris Evans was a great presenter. Thanks for uploading this. Can't help thinking that within less than 2 years of his death half a million Sinclair ZX81 personal computers were sold and by 1984 5 million Spectrums in the UK, quite aside from Commodore, Dragon, Acorn and BBC computers - and so many people began computing careers. I wonder what Chris Evans would have made of the fact that by the end of the 80s these computers evolved into gaming consoles and in the 90s ICT education became largely spreadsheets and wordprocessing.

I was really into the book at the time. In the past ten years I got into online learning but gradually my institution has phased it out! What I found was that the online learning community wanted to provide something amazing, better than the classroom, that the learners (here in Japan) are not interested, and that I found it to be good for getting the drudgery out of the classroom, so that rote learning be performed online. The thing that really fired my imagination in this book, when I was about 15 I guess, is the possibility that computers would start creating computers. I guess he will get to that possibility soon (in this episode? He hints at it at about 23:50). Nick Bolstrom (and James Cameron) is about the only person I know that took the warning seriously. LIke multi-level marketing, there is something about the possibility of self creating systems that is very exciting and persuasive. Perhaps the attractiveness of creative computers is because it is true of myself - I sort of made myself and that is the secret of my being. But "self creating software" has only three hits on Google scholar. He was right at 21:53 about "in just under 30 years the population" (in India) will have doubled.
