Why is it a problem for Miles to be Spider-Man? The Flash has Jay, Barry and Wally. Even Robin had multiple people that’ve taken up that role. But it’s only problem for Miles for some reason.

Problem with that argument is both of those serve sidekick roles under a seasoned and older hero. Spider-Man was never intended to be a sidekick nor have one. Which is why Spider-Boy feels even more forced than Miles. No one asked for any of this. No one cared. Bendis took it upon himself to kill of 16 year old Peter Parker and replaced him with 13 yr old Miles Morales and they were for a long time basically the same besides the obvious physical and age differences.

If I were to put my own hat into the debate of, "Mile is Miles, or Miles isn't Spider-Man," it does stem from the fact when you compare other type of legacy heroes', Miles for the past 10 years is still stuck in Peter's shadow in terms of story telling, character development, and even world building. The Likes of Wally and Dick were able to form their own stories, adventures, and character arc that shape them to who they are. In my personal opinion, Miles hasn't had that yet. I think the recent comics are trying to do it, but it still feels something that people have read with Peter before, even one to one. At least with the other spider people, there's a twist to it that doesn't feel as familiar as it looks when reading. Spider verse movie went in the right direction in terms of giving Miles something new with his character and purpose, but I feel across the spider verse mess it up with using themes we've seeing in the first movie, and painting Miguel as an antagonist instead of confronting the real threat of the movie. The likes of Miguel, Ben, Kaine, Mayday, Anya, even Jessica, they all have something that makes them unique and earn their title name, and even to a point, separate themselves from Peter to a point. What has Miles done in the last 10 years that makes him different from Peter Parker? And why should he be call Spider-Man? I feel that's where the stigma of the Miles Morales debate has stem from. The fact Miles isn't treated like a real character, who has his own set of problems, and is worlds a part from Peter or any other Spider people. That the writers gives him so much things similar to Peter, but not enough material where it's his own story. Have him explore why his powers is different from all the other's spider's, touch more on being Brooklyn friendly neighborhood Spider-Man, give him villains that fascinating, but also logical, and make sense, have him grow instead of keeping him a teenager, put him in scenario's where it forces him to think and do that showcase how different he is from Peter. I may sound like that I don't consider Miles as Spider-Man, but I do. My own problem stems from the inconstancy in his writing, and how lackluster of a beat by beat story telling that takes a bit too much inspiration from Peter. Miles shouldn't be Peter, neither from story wise, from the similar villains he has, the character arcs he goes through. He should simply be Miles, and have more unique tails that are separate from Peter. If all the other spider people can have that, then so could Miles.

How can you forget that the Clone Saga is one of Spider-mans most hated storyline. Completely disingenuous. People only warmed up to him after he Stop trying to be Peter and got his Own name and died. Miguel is a Spider-person who like many of the rippoffs back in the day were more original. Before miles the Peter copies had different powers, origins, histories and personalities. But they weren't catching on so they created Black Peter Parker and gave him a different name. It feels like you took something that was unique and integral to the story and decided to mass produce it into copies. Then painted it in different colors to say it's "different". Feels cheap and a bit lazy. Like cool new spider people.....who all have the exact same plot beats within their stories.....great. But I can see the argument as to Miles being a derivative as a bad thing since it dries up creative avenues for him as a character. The fact that Miles resembles Peter’s Spider-Man is intentional, as Spider-Man has always been and still is his biggest inspiration in defining what it means to be a hero. The connection is both coherent and expected; 2. This isn’t an inherent flaw; it lies in subjectivity and expectations. It’s completely valid to want something more original, but the lack of it doesn’t automatically make the entire story bad; 3. Miles' Spider-Man also has plenty of unique elements compared to Peter's.

Hell took me years to appreciate Jordan because I honestly thought he was John's permanent replacement. But all those characters you named can let the story get far too cluttered if the narrative isn't long enough or have enough of a good premise for them to be there. It's ONE of the BIGGEST reasons as to WHY they branched out on their own. Are they bad? No. Do we far too often see them being wasted? Yes.

Yeah, I agree that it’d probably feel better if Miles showed up in the Insomniac universe when Peter is on his mid 30s. Even as a superhuman, he still grows old and would likely sustains long term injuries from his everyday crime fighting routine. However, I’d still argue that it makes sense for that version of Peter to want to retire sooner. Aunt May died recently, he wants to build a family with MJ and contribute to the community in a less… violent way. It’s REALLY hard to do that when you’re sacrificing yourself to the life of a superhero almost 24/7. Plus, it makes a lot of sense that Peter would have a way more relaxed attitude towards retiring knowing that there is someone else out there whom he trusts because, whom he personally trained and whom is more than capable of taking on the mantle of Spider-Man. And it’s not like Peter Parker of all people is just gonna sit by and do nothing when people need help. He knows Miles will probably have it handled most of the times but if there’s ever a situation where he needs to step in and help, he’ll do it in a heartbeat.

Not just anybody can be any hero. Otherwise heroes wouldn't be iconic. Their alter egos would lack weight since it would make it more about the costume than it is about who's inside it. Also narratively it's a bit boring and lazy. It kinda says to just have powers and replace people on a whim. A story needs to establish what makes this character a hero. Which Miles does. When it comes to taking the mantle that's already established.....that's an entire different thing. Question comes up if this new character is up to snuff and if the previous holder would even want that. Like why would Peter, knowing how miserable being Spider-Man is, want to have someone else have that responsibility of misery using his name? What Stan Lee said and obviously implied is that we can all be heroes. That we can become inspired by the stories we read and be what we hope to see. It's not to have Superpowers and be Batman overnight, it's to take what we have and make the world better.

1: The former honestly. Since they're have long enough to give Miles his own identity and haven't. Two heroes operating at the same time with the same name is awkward, and having to specify "the other..." or "the younger..." and so on just makes it more awkward. 2: If it's done right, it's not a problem. Be it the various Green Lanterns that exist because the Green Lanterns are and always were an organization, Terry as Batman Beyond after Batman OG retired, and yes, even the various alt version of Spiderman that exist completely separate from Peter Parker are are all versions of him, all with their own identities (2099, Scarlet Spider, Spider Gwen, Superior, etc.). Except Miles, who doesn't have his own identity (aside from pairing the moniker with his real name), and co-exists nowadays alongside Peter. That's the difference between him and all this other mantle swaps.

Batman does plenty of killing in comics, games, and TV shows. And Terry isn't going on a killing frenzy. Also Terry is a more compelling character than Miles. Not to mention how each hero handles their mantles is completely different. Batman is an unrelenting force of nature that if Bruce could do it, he wouldn't even let death stop him. Makes since for him to have a successor since Batman is entirely dedicated to his mission. Peter is FAR different. it's more attached to who he is as a person than to the ideas he represents. It's why he kinda never has a sidekick. Spider-Man isn't an everlasting promise to fight against crime. It's one man trying to do his best even though nothing works out for him. Peter's life isn't a mission, it's a sacrifice he's taken upon himself and only himself. Why would he give that to someone else.

My biggest issue with Miles is ever since he got placed in the main universe they’ve had zero idea what to do with him. They had something really cool with Ultimatum but that ended, the accessor would’ve been cool if Iron Man( it really should’ve been Peter if they were gonna have someone close to him fix the issue) didnt just fix the problem for him and recently they’ve just been given him random powers instead of character arc. I really liked his venom threads (it was the perfect way of giving him organic webs without actually giving him organic webs) but then they never used it again. Now it’s a lightsaber out of nowhere.

Honestly I'd probably argue better in favor of Miles not being his own original Spider-Man when he joins 616 because initially when Miles first came out and when i was a kid i could still see he was pretty much a redux young Peter parker but he was still doing some orginal stuff. His Uncle Ben was Peter, Nick Fury was his mentor, and he fought off Peters' rouges. But it worked there because Peter had died and someone needed to take up the mantle in the Ultimate Universe and the aftermath of Peters death and how to fill that void was an interesting topic being discovered and added upon. When he moved over to the 616 universe tho thats when things got bad and i kinda had an issue with it because now he had a Peter who was alive, shared an alive Peters villians, Peter any time they teamed up usually gets undermind by Miles same with the Avengers when they fought Blackheart. He also had Gwen as a love intreast, same as Peter in his early days which he should be uncomfortable with given that the Gwen he knows from his own universe and the history between them. Its like dating a younger version of your teacher. But with all that being said he's recently kinda grew on me again, and i dont think i have enough augments to go against him as of now. (And hopefully i wont need too.) I like now how he has his own villians , his own girl, his own supporting superhero group like Ironman, Black Panther, Blade, his daughter, Misty and a few others that aren't just in his family. And his comics are legit good and feel original now. The only thing i dont like is the constant power-ups. For example, he already has electrical powers and invisblitity why can he shoot out plasma waves now? But they can't allow Peter to have his bone talons or organic webs because, well i dont know why but i digress. Good video, though, man. And sorry if this is to long but it was just a thought.

Here's a hot take.....Peter wouldn't want anyone else to be Spider-Man. Think about how long of a run in the comics he's had and why for the majority he's been doing it solo. No sidekicks. No support. All him. One. it's integral to his message that one person is enough to fight all the incoming evil in the world. Two. Bein Spider-Man sucks. All his alternate versions of Peter have miserable lives. Why would he let that misery spread under his name? Its counter to his nature of self-sacrifice. Which as far as I'm concerned nobody comes close to Peter when it comes to sacrificing himself for other people.

@@Mrsplifferdoodle Insomniac has Tombstone be a go-kart mechanic. Let's not pretend they fully understand and are faithful to characterization. One. Him teaming up rarely lasts. It's an arc or issue long. Not a staple of his. Now don't get me wrong. You got Spider-Man and friends (Spidey, Iceman, Firestar) and Ultimate Spiderman (basically young Avengers). But they were never the preferred versions of him. Actually Ultimate Spiderman has a bit of straight up hate going towards it and it's never been anyone's favorite. Two. It doesn't detract from the fact that he's a solo hero.

@@aprenda123 probably childhood nostalgia if im being honest with myself haha, but I loved his more combative nature, his version of the clone saga was better to me, I prefered the venom arc and purpleish symbiote as well as the fact that venom truly felt like a monster, I loved his friendship with Johnny and the death of ultimate Spider-Man is one of my favorite comics and not gonna lie, an Hulk-ish, fire throwing green goblin is fucking amazing 🤣🤣ive read the entire ultimate series and tbh the ultimate universe wasn't very good overall but the Spider-Man run specifically was excellent at least in my opinion, there is flaws but also many great things to remember about it and it inspired alot of other good Spider-Man stuff later down the line and again, this is just my opinion but the artwork for ultimate Spider-Man was my favorite, the very big eyes and overall costume for spidey and the new redesign for our favorite heroes was always great to see and many of them were improvements to me, especially Nick Fury who was changed from a generic white dude to Samuel L Jackson, litteraly 🤣 EDIT: the video game is also a masterpiece ahead of its time
