My granddaddy had bee hives in Virginia after he retired. The honey was delicious but he especially enjoyed sitting in his garden and watching the bees come and go. Great hobby.

Also, just curious, it didn't seem like you needed to spoke the bees through the entirety of the maintenance process or was the can on the ground billowing smoke throughout the process?
