True: you're probably able to work your way out of a bad situation and the only person who can. Also true: most times you will fail, even if you put in an insane amount of effort. The "power to change your life", then, is the willpower to start the process again and again, knowing that if the next outcome is a new failure, it will feel even more bitter. And you will have slid back somewhat in the time interval between a failure and the moment when you've gathered enough willpower to start all over again. Realistically, I think there's only so many attempts that people will find the strength for until they give up. This is why I think motivation and pulling yourself by the bootstraps only go so far. At some point, the unluckiest people either have to be cared for structurally by the rest of society (return to the external locus of control) or just abandon their current life altogether to try out a different mode of existence in another environment (kind of taboo as it's scary and not in the society's interest).

Good stuff, but whenever this kind of "personal responsibility" advice is given, you see it used in a way that implies that "those people" should take personal responsibility. It's great advice if you use it for yourself, but it's not a great way of understanding others. For myself, I try to have an internal locus of control. For others, I try to apply this: "Everyone you meet is fighting a battle you know nothing about. Be kind. Always."

Yeah I was thinking the same thing too. or else its like we put so much pressure on others, not feel that empathy for them, and our expectations for people rise which isn't fair to do since we can't control others and they have there own life how they want to do things. I love what you said, be kind always, and people will see that in us too and naturally cause a positive impact in their life. Thanks for sharing that thought.

The Locus of control is an interesting concept. Sometimes that “taken care of” could be absent upon growth until later on in life. Thus, resulting in an almost endless cycle of playing catch up. Having the power to change your trajectory is difficult to implement nevertheless breaking the bad habits that correlate. Thank you for the video.

It all comes to the resources we have at hand. If you grow without or with very little resources because of the incompetence or misfortune of whom you grew with, you will have a very hard time. All of your opportunities depend on the resources you have. It’s super easy for the majority to develop that internal locus of control because of the resources they have which facilitate their ambitions, dreams, and academic and professional plans. People with lack of resources, if they are intelligent enough, will recognize that their unfortunate circumstances are caused by things that weren’t out of their control, and therefore they will have to use their intelligence in order to get out of the hole. It’s a very dark and difficult hole to get out of.

I am worried my work will see just how negative I am and then idk where I will be in my life. I really feel like I need my best friend back but I have no Idea how to show them that. They moved away and blocked me on everything, if I were to message them I would only have one last shot to say what I might need to get them back into my life in only a couple sentences. What do I say to them, I let them down and wasn't there for them when I needed to be, my mental health has been the worst this last year and I never meant to be mean to them.

The first time I saw the Tree of Life years ago marked a pivotal moment in my late teenage years when my parents were finalizing a long awaited divorce. I absolutely loved how abstract the movie is, which allowed me to project my own life circumstances on it. At the time I felt really depressed and sorry for myself and the seemingly rough family atmosphere in which I was brought up, but that movie reminded me how big the world and the universe are, as well as reminded me of my creative curiosity due to the directing and cinematography. I even visited New Sweden Church and Barton Springs with my dad, where some of the scenes were filmed. Anyways, love your inclusion of clips from that movie here; it made me reflect on your message and the movie in a unique way.

I agree with this basic premise that perspective on life can change your outlook and your sense of wellbeing. It's important to recognize what you truly are and aren't in control of and develop a healthy mindset around it, and I think you've hit on that here. However, there is also a psychology of success that shouldn't be overlooked, and that is the false notion that success is 100% earned. We can't ignore the pitfall of equating correlation with causation. A lot of success is due to privilege and luck, and false narratives around that success are created by successful people when they don't want to admit that to themselves. They want to think it was their hard work and determination, that they earned it when maybe that was only part of the whole story, so they believe they have control over their successes and failures when perhaps they don't. That's where this notion of the American Dream comes from, that with enough hard work, everyone has equal opportunity to be successful. Therefore, whether you are or aren't, you deserve your status in life. Most of us know this isn't true, even if we don't want to admit it. It assuages the 'survivor guilt' of the rich and allows them to look down on the poor. So, in general, yes, losing learned helplessness is beneficial to human psychology, but if you're going to buy into the idea that 'successful' people have it figured out and have solved some enigma of life you haven't, it's important to look at why they have particular mindsets to see if it's even a contributing factor to be emulated. Perhaps the fact that they possess this trait is a result of their success, rather than the cause of. And the pitfall of believing you are the cause of external events even when you aren't is a Cognitive Distortion called Personalization, which can swing the pendulum to the other side of the spectrum. It can lead to a lot of unnecessary guilt. So where is the balance? It's an important discussion to continue to have with oneself.

Mental illness affects the likelihood of adopting (or really even the ability to adopt) this kind of control in life as well. It's an issue that is way more prevalent than people realize. I won't get into my own experiences in that regard right now because that would be a whole rabit hole, but sometimes it's functionally not possible to switch modes without outside help.

I heard messages from public figures that promoted a lifestyle of self improvement based on the concept of taking personal responsibility for everything wrong with your life, even if you are not the person who caused the problems. I had this belief deep in my personality until the 2020 pandemic started. I used to promote the idea of taking charge of your life to many friends and family, even to the point where I annoyed certain people. Once the pandemic hit, I was reasonably worried but felt like things would be ok so long as we did what we felt were supposed to (my beliefs like most peoples have evolved since the pandemics beginning) and tried to stay positive. Then I slowly felt the feeling you describe of having your childlike dependence creep back into your adult form. The real breaking point was discovering that I have Asperger Syndrome and had an overwhelming sense of "I am not fucking normal and never will be." This feeling of dread utterly captivated my life even to this very day because I will learn new things about how to handle myself in a more healthy manner. When I learned more about my condition and how to help myself, I opened so much painful childhood history that just hurt me so severely to experience again and I believe I snapped into a helpless manchild upon the discovery. As soon as I discovered it within myself I noticed all my relationships in my life crumbling rapidly because of reasons that are both related (work people not understanding what you can help or not help, work using the good parts of my condition to their advantage while leaving me feeling alienated for the bad parts, gf not looking at me the same until I took the time to truly educate her on what asperger's even is i.e. proving to her it doesn't mean Im so mentally ill that I'll ruin our future) and unrelated (general issues with stress, routine, schedule, life planning, relationship, money, etc.) to my condition. It got to a point where I had to have a real talk with my gf about if we should even continue our relationship. She suffers from ADHD and has her issues as well so we were able to sort of bridge a gap mentally and find that in the end we really do feel a deep love for each other and let the current situation blind us from that and that we can both accept each other for who we are just fine. I felt like I finally won a huge battle plaguing my life, but I still had my work issues. Literally on this very day I almost threw my job away with no backup plan because I was passed up for a promotion I truly felt I deserved and worked very hard for. I had a meltdown from overthinking about my recent relationship stress and how I've alienated myself at work with my autistic episodes (before I knew I had it and people found out, they thought I was a lil eccentric but a very fun positive person, after they find out I become that "stressed out weird guy") and I could not help but let all of the events overwhelm me and cause me to utterly break down at work. My manager had a long private talk about how I missed a lot of work before that and If everything was ok to which I vented my issues, I have to talk with another manager tomorrow about what my issues to see if they can help in any possible way which I am extremely appreciative to have that kind of support even at a job that stresses me horribly. Then I see this video and for the first time in forever I truly feel like I got a little bit of sense put back into my brain and I realize my issue. My locus of control has been bordering on the internal and the external due to the problems in life I could not help but take personally. I immediately started typing this to thank you for opening my eyes and taking me back to a better version of myself who didn't take life as if I am always being buried under. I can take charge again like I did before, even if I have weird ticks I can't necessarily control, I can take responsibility for myself once again and I haven't felt this sense of joy In a while. From the bottom of my heart Thank you!

I definiley relate to this so much. My dad left (I was 6), so didn’t have him, and my mom thought she was helpless and things were out of her hands. She remained unemployed and never taught me how to do things.

Thank you for this video!! I've realized I've always focused on an external Locus of Control because that's how my parents are and I literally had to distance myself from them because that way of thinking was consuming me. I have a long way to go, but this video has helped me get some perspective.

You put what I was just thinking into words. I just started a job and I’m not feeling it, but I’m not currently in a position where I *have* to be there, so I’m gonna change it

I think we should be careful with internal locus of control. I went through a breakup recently, and for weeks i still go through everything thinking about what could i have done differently. More dates. More intimacy. Less takeouts. And it is hard for me to just accept it wasn't my fault.

Balance in all things. Understand that complaining wont help you and you have to deal with the situation you have been place to. Understand that life is shaped by factors and events that are out of your control and this is true for everyone. So be compassionate to yourself and to others. Misery can strike even those who did no mistakes. Basically be Stoic.

I’m a third thing. I recognize opportunity and don’t externalize negativity, but am incredibly unmotivated and deeply internalize negative assumptions. Even 2 years of focused therapy still feeling like effort doesn’t equal results. With that said, I love how you’ve laid it out, internal locust of control, I’ll work on creating more of a relationship with the small locust bug inside my brain that controls me

We're really good at living efficiently by reducing our energy output. Sucking on external sources gets us through the years pretty easily. It's a pattern built into us just like our capacity to automate daily routines, without which we'd die from exhaustion in short time, because using our mind to think through everything on the spot takes a lot of energy and our mind can can run away on us. It's a fine line between being a plant and being an overthinker.

There is a somewhat sad paradox in that an external locus of control is probably the more rational and scientifically valid perspective (people are shaped by their genetics and environment, neither of which they have control over), and a society that recognizes this will overall treat its members better (think rehabilitation of prisoners, educational investments in kids, high-quality welfare, etc), while an internal locus of control is the more beneficial from a personal perspective (since it leads to motivation, discipline, responsibility). My proposal for dealing with this is to view yourself as a free-willed agent (and thus take responsibility for being the best you possible), while adopting a more situational outlook on why other people are the way they are (this will lead to more compassion and understanding, rather than frustration and anger).

Perfection! No-one is coming....gotta start making the changes within before changes will occur externally (& usually it's just a change of perspective and response). Freeing as you don't have to wait for someone/something else to come save you

Focusing on trying to control external things is only going to lead to frustration and misery. We can truly only control internal things such as our feelings toward something, or opinions, the decisions we make, your mood, and so forth. Stoicism talks about the dichotomy of control a lot. It’s so easy to understand and adds so much value when embraced.
