HESH "does" do overpressure but its very bad, barely works on even light tanks

Its funny how german engineers designed polar opposites of their ww2 tanks during the cold war, they were really like "well that didnt work too well"

If we're being serious here, it's because the guns and shells developed post war hits so much harder that at the time, there were almost no way to desgin a tank that can effectively block the shots while having reasonable weight and cost. So the designers and engineers just put all their effort to "not get hit" instead of the WW2 German zoo bullshit that keeps getting bigger and heavier

Fun Fact: The Ru 251 is built upon the hull of the Kanonenjagdpanzer, making it to my knowledge the only actual tank built on a Tank Destroyer chassis, and not the other way around.

There is actually one (and I think it's only just one) other example of this - the Lorraine 40t is built on the chassis / hull of the CA Lorraine, rather than the other way round, since the Lorraine company wanted to submit a prototype to the French armed forces when they started looking at a tank lighter than the AMX-50 was panning out to be, and they had already built the CA Lorraine as an assault gun / self-propelled gun and so just yoinked the finished chassis for the project No other cases I can immediately think of where this happened beyond that though, so you're right about the rarity

This tank was designed as a replacement for the light tank role, as Germany used the M41 before. However, Germany developed the Leopard 1 at the same time and realized that the Ru-251 is redundant since the Leopard 1 could pack way more protection and firepower while being nearly as capable when it comes to mobility. Fun fact: Suprisingly the Ru-251 was built on the chassis of the KanJpz 4-5, unlike in WW2 where it was usually the other way around.

I wish the reverse speed was a tad bit greater than the 8 km/h or so it is currently. They're not as good as some other tanks tier-for-tier, but they're not terrible.

I don't know why people think HESH should overpressure like HE. That is not what the round is intended to do. The "HE" in HESH is there mainly to create high kinetic energy at impact inside the round. That is then used to "squash the head", or better to deal an enormous punch to the target's armor, literally breaking off huge metal chunks inside the tank that fly and bounce in the interior at ridiculous speed. That's why it works better on flat heavy armor plates. So, in contrary to HE, the HESH shockwave is mostly used for spalling, not directly for ripping a crew apart. Also, it is used more for demolition purposes, concrete etc, than killing tanks. In my younger days I was trained as a tank commander in a Leopard I. I've seen some examples of the spalling caused by HESH inside a tank. It's terrifying.

That's how it functions against enclosed tanks with armor, a very light vehicle isn't going to care if it's HESH or HE or HE-FRAG, it's going to crumple. HESH's energy is not nearly as directional as HEAT.

Honestly, I'm an enormous player of RU251 since it came out, and even since, I always find that its heat-fs was quite powerful compared to other tanks (especially Leopard's one), for me it was always a pleasure to play this tank, you can like, anihilate everything that moves in your sight range

I used to have a very different perception of the Ru 251. One of my friends got it back when the IS-6 premium came out. We could never deal with them head on even with the HEATFS because the IS-6 at the time had one of its turret armor plates broken and given higher effective thickness vs its actual RHA thickness so total effective turret armor was like 300mm+ so 90mm HEAT couldn't pen.

You should play the pbil m/40. Its a Swedish premium tank that has a 20mm autocannon with good pen at 2.0. The tank is very similar to the low tier sdkfz with the added bonus of a much bigger mag. It also 6 crew for some reason making it extremely survivable unlike the kfz.

I've been playing War Thunder since about a month after the public beta was release (you can imagine the play time lol) and I've never bought a premium vehicle. All I ever bought was premium time except when the Ru 251 released. I absolutely adore this tank. The mobility is incredible, it's super flat and can hide in many places other tanks can't and I have yet to encounter a tank that I struggle to kill. To me, the Ru 251 is perfection.
