Surprise! Normally competitors would be directed to our infamous Mud Pit event at this point in the Top Truck Challenge competition, but due to the 2014 California drought, the Mud Pit was replaced with the gnarly, waterless Mini Rubicon. The course was approximately 140 feet in length and packed with boulders and rocks of various sizes. To keep things exciting, there were no penalties for winching, stopping, or backing up. Instead, we gave each competitor 5 minutes to travel as far as they could. Traveling out of bounds resulted in disqualification at that point.
We also renovated the Obstacle Course for 2014: no long downhill section and an entirely dry course. But was it easier? Nope. Our demented course builders made sure this first event would be a real eye-opener for competitors. Competitors began in the lower section, which was pockmarked with evil holes, off-camber sections, and gobs of loose dirt. They then traveled to the upper section that included a pair of deep, nasty holes and the infamous “U-Turn Hill.” From there, it was into a ravine that stood guard over the finish line. Even with a 10-minute time limit this event is less about speed and more about accuracy. Who will be stopped cold?

The rear steer does play a big role in maneuverability and it aided the competitors, thus it was a big topic during the event. The announcer is a 15 year veteran of Off-Road Racing and fabricates his own rigs, so he gets excited about the event and does appreciate the technical builds.

I really like seeing these trucks, but I also like more street oriented ones as well. Has it been considered to have 2 classes; one with the trucks we see here and another with more limitations (examples: street legal, less body modifications, no rear steer, tire size limit, etc).

As an Australian, we have a Tuff Truck Challenge there & the average tyre size is a 40” (average) engines vary from LS to 6cyl petrols to 4cyl Diesels. The trucks here could do all these tracks. My question is why so big/tall & why big blocks & 54’s? 🤔Unless these trucks are used for mud bogging as well?

Nism0Z34 True, but electric motors you can just load them up. Where as a petrol will stall. As you can run with no gearbox, you got less to bust. Still love me petrol engines, but I don't see much holding the electrical power back bar battery packs/power.

Can somebody tell me something About the brake discs, and caliperc in the differentials. What they are for?

For stopping. Those axles don't normally have brakes out by the wheels.

masterfurb1 they do, but they're drums, pinion brakes are more effective for trail running at lower speeds as the disc turns about 6.7 times as fast as the tires, more torque and less expensive than to run 2 per axle also.

SpotterJacob The brakes on rockwell axles are very heavy and inefficient. the "pinion brake" as it were is substantial lighter by a couple hundred lbs also due to the gear reduction and large tire size it is way easier to stop the rig by grabbing the drive shaft rather than grabbing the tires.

entertaining but mislabeled I think, top truck, not really, it's more like best off road machine, these don't even resemble trucks anymore for the most part. They look like movie props. Don't misunderstand me though, they are awesome machines, just not "trucks" anymore. A few this year look kind of neat, the international full size and the ford full size, they at least look the part a bit, but even then, they are more Frankenstein than "truck"....

Actually this year TTC has improved the field of competition, as each truck, actually started life as a vehicle. Ie: no buggies, or complete tube chassis.

We hear you, Tim Vincent. Maybe "Highly Modified Rock-Eating Off-Roaders" feels more fitting? When it began in 1993, TTC was designed to test the engineering capabilities of 4x4s by putting them up against the most intense challenges in the wheeling world. Over the years, we've maintained that goal, but we've also adapted to the evolving world of off-road competition (no longer requiring, for example, that the vehicles be street legal). As such, 20+ years later, the competitors look different than the originals did, but the bragging rights remain the same.
