It's also so that you have a generic good guy faction. Institute are obviously bad guys and while the Brotherhood aren't as bad on the east coast as they are back west, they still aren't the nicest people and only really care about themselves. The Miniutemen, however, have no moral drawbacks. They just want to help people and build cool settlements and dress like apocalyptic colonials.

The minutemen give you the easiest route to defeating the Institute. No fetch quests to get Liberty Prime up and running. The minutemen give you map control. Establish settlements, build artillery. The more you have the more fire support you can call upon and the more value you get from your flare gun (summoned NPCs are decent enough decoys, valuable in Survival Mode when every mole rat bite might necessitate anti-biotics or a visit to the doctor.

Problem of having Sole Survivor as faction is that by the end of the game we make Institute obsolete. Seriously. They developed 3 Gen 3 synths(Nick, DiMA and "Mask"), two of them rebelled and escaped, last one caused massacre in the Diamond City. Institute shat their pants and NEVER developed another synth. They've stole Vault-Tec cloning tech, stole Shaun and mass produced his clones. Forced control chip into the skull of each one(give me Mesmetron and bomb collars and I can also "produce synths"). They're not even cyborgs despite Institute being able to produce bionics for Kellogg. Meanwhile what does Sole Survivor do? Recovers secret joint RobCo/General Atomics production line, recovers lead pre-war scientist on Robobrain project, recovers several Vault-Tec reactors from an unbuilt Vault, recovers Nuka World robotics mainframe that prevents the same problem that Mechanist faced. Now I can mass produce humanoid "Robocops"(assaultron body and legs, robobrain head and arms), name them after killed named characters and pretend that they can use human weapons and armor just like Calculator robots. My robot army is cooler:P

The Minutemen, when you meet them, consist of a suicidal dude with big dreams and a bigger brim on his hat (Preston), a synth cosplaying as a washed-up mechanic (Sturges), two parents suffering from severe and untreated PTSD (Jun Long and Marcy Long), and a drug-addled OAP who has hallucinations (Mamma Murphy). That isn't a "faction", that's a bunch of victims a bad day away from getting their collective cheeks clapped in every sense of the word (which is exactly why they're getting pressed by Raiders in Concord when you first find them). There's nothing for them to "bring to the table"; hell, there isn't even a table for them to bring stuff to! It is the Sole Survivor who _(re-)creates_ the Minutemen.

the minutemen actually did lose if you think about it. only preston fought back in the museum of freedom while the rest accepted their fate, then preston makes you the leader as soon as the mention and sight of being able to live safe and in shelter finally arises giving it to the random stranger that saved him once and knows nothing about him/her, then to all become lazy settlers who live out their days with preston barely caring to assist you and help out as a self proclaimed second in command that bosses you about so you can progress the game rather than lead the faction your own way. they all gave up on being part of the minutemen and became settlers instead. preston killed the faction. it doesnt exsist unless you decide to fight for a dead faction under your name.

In Fallout New Vegas you could help a few rookie soldiers of the NCR learn proper combat skills. The Sole Survivor is a pre-war soldier which can be the general of the minutemen (and in cut BOS content we could had become the Elder) Considering SS knowledge on Power Armor and combat capabilities Nate could easily train the Minutemen on a same type of quest, gather and craft power Armors and train them. Make them a good force...

i half class the minutemen as a sub faction alongside the raiders and gunners because as you go to save whats left of the minutemen in the mueseum of freedom, the only person who decides to bother to fight for their life and defend themselves and shoot back is preston. the rest had already given up under his leadership and basically accepted death as they were already losing 3 or more people in less than 24hours every day. by the time you save them and get to sanctuary to give them shelter and a home, they instantly decide to act like settlers and become lazy and preston just hands the leadership to a random person who just saved him cause even he knew he wasnt fit to lead which means that the minutemen cease to exsist without the players intervention or continuation anyway. preston quit his role as the faction leader, although what remains of the few that lived, they just decide to become settlers after being saved and didnt care that they were. they didnt fight back before and now theyve become lazy settlers just enjoying each day alive while you risk your life and do everything for them so they can disguise themselves as still being the minutemen when they no longer contribute or care to the cause.

You can quickly and cheaply equip more soldiers with leather, or you can invest into some combat armor for recource cost. You couldve taken over an old weapons plant or something to begin standardizing on some lasermuskets or maybe have a little room to move up to lazer rifles or some balistic weapons after you had taken the castle back. The minutemen just feel forgotten and neglected tbh

The perks of owning not just one but several settlements, is endless supply of purified water, drug manufacturing, A place or places to store all your power armor you scavenged. Positioning strategically all over the map to call in minutemen reinforcements to take hits for you. Artillery which you can blow up anything you want anywhere. You also can recruit to your hearts content. Effectively having the biggest army in the Commonwealth.

I usually have mods that changes their outfits to military fatigues with light-sturdy combat armour, increased patrols depending how many settlements you have and pipe guns swapped out for combat rifles, hunting rifle and 10 mils.

The benefit of the Minutemen is the artillery you can build at settlements, if you're in range you can throw a flare that will call down multiple strikes, like having mini nukes on speed dial.

I actually love a mod called 'We Are The Minutemen.' Slows down the radiant quests, makes the minutemen level up their gear as you do, patrols actually happen, retaking the castle gives you new stuff to build beyond artillery, You can make minutemen versions of nearly every basic clothing item, adding mods and weave slots to them (and usually a +1 to charisma). Plus you can make Preston's duster for yourself, it allows armor pieces to be worn, and if you ask me, while the pieces all clip through the armor, the medium leather armor looks like a natural part more than awkwardly clipping.
