Annie went through much worse when she was Helen's age. She was used to no help from anyone. She probably went through trauma when she was a kid. Losing your handicapped brother must've been one of the most traumatic things to happen ALL while living in a psych ward because their parents didn't want to deal with them.

This was probably the most realistic “Miracle Worker” adaptation. The little girl in this movie looks the most like Helen Keller really did in real life and behaved very similarly to her too. I really loved Disney’s “Miracle Worker” adaptation with Hallie Eisenberg as Helen too, she played that role very well. But I think in that movie they made her look a little too much like a little dressed up doll or something. In the Disney version, Helen’s clothes are always pristine clean and she has long, curly dark hair which always done so beautifully. The real Helen Keller had shorter, messier hair and her clothes were always dirty from always eating off people’s plates & stuff. Guess for a Disney, they had to tone things down a little so it wouldn’t be too intense for kids.
@vanyadolly
@vanyadolly 3 жыл бұрын
The Disney version is very cleaned up, but it does get credit for actually having a child play Helen, and I think all the performances were very good. She's supposed to be seven but looks like a teenager in the other adaptions.
@fivefiveqt214
@fivefiveqt214 2 жыл бұрын
To have legends like Anne Bancroft and a then 16 year old Patty Duke play such intense roles will forever be iconic and almost impossible to top in future adaptations. Their Oscars was well deserved. R.I.P. to them both.

@@vanyadolly ehh, I'd rather have a teenager playing a child character (I honestly thought she was supposed to be 12 not 7 lol) who gives an amazing performance, than a child playing the character but giving an okay performance.

The startling ferocity of that brutal whack at Bancroft's face lifts this movie above the overripe, groan-inducing Hollywood sentimentality. This scene, the stylized main titles, the prolongued dinner table scuffle, those grainy memory flashbacks, and Bancroft and Duke's hard tenacity remain powerful after all these years. The film ends on a sentimental note, yes, but it is earned, not forced on us.
@rebeccassweetmusic4632
@rebeccassweetmusic4632 2 жыл бұрын
Totally agreed! The sentimental ending came naturally. I'd argue that the first scene of the movie also let us know that this wasn't going to be a soft movie. It was real and raw. All the pain it took to teach Helen not only how to communicate, but also teach her manners must've been physically draining. Even Helen herself explained in her book, "The Story of My Life" that she wasn't an easy kid. This showed how far she would come when she was an adult who became one of the most well-known disability activists, suffragettes, and Civil Rights activists of all time!

Helen wasn't even 2 years old when she suffered the scarlet fever. They basically gave up mostly. The only way they could make Helen calm down is if they give a piece of Peppermint, she'll be quiet for a short while. But after they gave her one after Helen stab Annie's hand with a sewing needle, they admit they didn't know they were "rewarding" her, they thought they were just trying to keep her calm and they apologize to Annie.

After seeing this movie, I can tell that Sean Astin gets his looks from his mom (Patty Duke). They have the same eyes and face. Also, Anne Bancroft was amazing in this movie too. Not surprised that both of them won Oscars. Especially after seeing them doing that physically intense and taxing scene where Annie tries to get Helen to eat with a spoon... The part where Annie keeps giving her the silver spoons while Helen just smacks them away was enough to let me know why they won Oscars for Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress

Tala Beni I know this is very late to respond but Anne Bancroft died at 73. So she is right. She is talking about Anne Bancroft, not the real Annie Sullivan. She is right.

I was like this trying to get revenge with autistic nephew. He locked me up. if anyone you have dumbest kid. Always mock their worthless God. Always play education game when child don't like. Once you done that. Child will get smarter. Don't let your child win for being stupidity.

Doesn't Helen in this movie also play as the teacher in the 2000 version? Sorry if it's a stupid question but the actresses look similar.

Patty Duke, who played 'Helen Keller' here, played 'Anne Sullivan' in the 1979 TV remake (with Melissa Gilbert as 'Helen').

I still don’t understand why she’s sounding out the letters if Helen was deaf. How could helen interpret the sounds and make the connection to the hand movement . Say for example a balled fist makes the letter “A” and phonetic sound aaaa correct. She can feel the balled fist in her had correct ,but how can she hear Ann pronounce the letter “A” and interpret that it makes the sound “aaahh” or “aayyee” if she’s can’t hear she can only feel. How can she understand what the sound of “W” is if she’s never heard nor can pronounce it, she can only feel this three pointed letter. How can you feel someone a sound if they haven’t heard it before?

Real answer is: for the movie audience. Possible explanation for the character to do it? Maybe out of habit, from teaching students that are merely blind?

Likely out of habit. Annie could hear just fine, and for a hearing person your first instinct when trying to communicate with someone is to speak with words. Plus, it’s also likely that spelling the words out loud helped her keep track of which hand signs to do in which order.
