Not many engineers do tutorials of EQing in context. I know they all say we should do it, but they EQ in solo in the video so it doesn't really help. This video instead, is REALLY GOOD because you do EQ in context, I think I learned a lot today :D

That's a great point! EQing in context can often be overlooked! thanks for your comment.

Funny you mention the Grey Scale. I studied the Zone System in photography (as applies to Black & White photography), and with every EQ move I make, I always think about how studying photography helped me to understand adjusting EQ and, even compression. One thing I always keep in mind about mixing is that, like our eyes (that may discern a large number of shades in a photograph), our ears can also discern a large number of frequencies. However, the problem is that (in both photography and music), we have to print photos or mix music to mediums that do a lessor job of reflecting all that we can see or hear. Our eyes can discern some 20,000 shades of light. However, the negative (in film photography) can only see (or reproduce) about 1/8th of those shades (I think it's 1/8). And even worse, the image then gets printed to paper that can reproduce an even smaller number of shades. So, we always have to be aware of the capabilities or rather, the limitations of the medium we are working with. Just a thought to share here.

Thanks New Guy! I guess I will have to look into Zone Systems now.

@@eduardogoncalves9311 Well... it's an older science or discipline that applies to film photography but the concepts are still relevant to the digital world too.

I can relate so much. I'm an absolute noob but more of a video guy than an audio guy at this point and my (limited) knowledge of videography has helped me understand audio quite a bit already.

I guess all the High end we hear on Scorpions and other Pro albums of that era and of that genera is the walls vibrating from the volume. Something is missing with Amp Sims. Delay and reverb do not create a reasonable facsimile of a cranked Amp. Still 100% better than mic'ing as small amp in a suit case and hoping no street cars go by during a good take although those were a lot easier to mix even if useless because of back ground noise. Good video, another perspective and idea to try.

The point is, the zero horizontal line in your equalizer is the zero line only when you' re adding band values. But when you decrease some dBs the zero horizontal line will be dragged down to your lowest value. Now look how the eq curve looks like and you'll see that you're not only taking that band out but all the rest is above the imaginary zero line... It's a matter of half empty or half filled. The mirror freq is like the see-saw freq in the audible spectrum. So, if I subtract energia from a freq band it will still be there trying to be spitted out no matter what. That's my point of view.

Exactly just like putting an EQ pedal before you hit an amp to clean up the sum of the harsh frequencies before they get clipped and your overdriven amp

here is my hot take, I read Mastering Audio in school and my god it was a bore. The main issue i found is that the book is pretty dated, even the subsequent editions are not as modern anymore, the focus and theory is heavily geared towards hardware and very little digital. There where only about 5 chapters that you can actually use and apply to modern mixing but the rest is just applicable to tape recording, A/D signals, surround mixing for movies and even for vinyl, most stuff the majority of people wont really use anymore.

But at what mood did u EQ, was it with linear phase or zero lentancy?
@ericktellez76322 жыл бұрын
it really does depend, linear phase will reduce any subsequent phase issues you might potentially get from the delay EQs produce (they have a "look ahead" model) however it still creates artifacts anyways and worse they take a lot of CPU, so you might not be able to be using linear phase eqs for as much tracks as you want, if you are eq elements that will be closer to the center i think you should just use regular EQs and utilize linear phase for elements that will have haas effects, stereo imagining effects or hard panning so you dont get as many phase issues on those elements that can be lost in mono
