Britain was absolutely known for good tank engines. The engine in the A39 Tortoise was the Rolls-Royce Meteor mated to a Merrit-Brown transmission, both of which were excellent. The Meteor was effectively an unsupercharged Merlin.

They stuck the engine in a Crusader to test it, and it propelled the tank so fast they didn't get a speed reading because all the officers were too shocked to take an accurate reading!

Not "effectively".. It *is* an un-supercharged Merlin (derived from the Merlin III), with reversed crank rotation, cast instead of forged pistons and tuned to run on less than the high octane "avgas" fuel needed for aircraft. They got up to 600 HP out of it initially, the original aero Merlin with supercharger achieved around 750hp, and the Merlin III the Meteor was spawned from made around 1130HP... so it was a decent effort for a lot less complexity, and lower quality fuel. It was a good idea, as there were masses of usable spares, knowledge, tooling and manufacturing ability available. When the supercharger, reduction gears and other items that were only needed for aircraft were removed, it became a reasonably light and compact power plant for it's output. Far better than the Leyland Diesel (only 350 HP) and earlier "liberty" V12 engine that was meant to be fitted to the Cromwells', or the Ford 400-500 HP V8 that ended up in later Shermans and Pershings and at the time of it's introduction (just prior to Normandy Landings) was having quite a few "teething" problems.

Watching Bo trying to drive the Tortoise by just brute forcing it and then panicing will never not be funny. Also, the thing has so much horizontal traverse you can absolutely angle it, which makes its armour more effective. Especially in combination with its good gun-depression.

Rolls royce meteor was pretty decent actually (for a ww2 era tank engine) Brits had problems with very low power and bulky and unreliable engines in the early part of the war, some of those monstrosities used bus engines stitched together... Then they got the idea of using a cut down detuned rolls royce merlin engine to make that, and they already understood that engine pretty well, it had power etc... so it makes sense they standardized on it for a while. You would probably had wanted to run 2 of them for a tortoise tho... Then they got back to leyland stuff and it was a disaster once again.

At a point in time where things just needed to happen the mass production of the same engine and ultimately being used in almost every vehicle isn't that much of a surprise. This just seems like the mighty t95, without the ability to survive bombs to the front for some reason (honestly have no clue the exact armor thickness of the tortoise to the t95, just that it's worse), no machine gun evelvation to fight off planes, no character unlike the t95, hatch is bigger and shaped in a way that makes it much less likely to ricochet anything, and i know war thunder is different but. The tortoise's ammo rack feels so much weaker in world of tanks compared to the t95
