not only lore, but character moments and character development. most of the characters in the game dont even exist in the world, outside of a single side quest or 2. meanwhile there are hours of character interractions and development in limited time events. like how can hu tao be such a prominent character, yet she dont exist in the game outside her quest. i think thats why genshins story is so bad/boring for many players, we have essentially missed out on half the character moments and only barely get to know a handful of them. newer players dont haev time to get to know most characters because the story throw them out so fast. is it too much to ask to just be able to see fischl in the game (outside of that one card game quest)

Nilou isn't a researcher nor a super significant person in Sumeru, yet the whole point of her quest is that she is still as important as a warrior like Cyno or a researcher like Alhaitham without having to be like them. It also showed us more about her. The theater is her family, so she is prepared to ridicule herself or put her integrity at risk for a member of her family. It wasn't just a random npc for her.

i do find it so weird that we have so little cyno lore with how much hoyo clearly love him and how much they tend to love flaunting charater backstories even if its in limited events. its clear that they have his lore planned out so why withhold it for so long after he has been released??? my best guess would be that it will come with natlan since the new fontaine npc in sumeru city confirmed that natlan borders on the sumeru desert but that seems like an oddly long time to withhold his lore for???

Thank you SO MUCH for making this video! I watched your Xiao video a while ago so it amuses me that you also analyzed Cyno, since I main them both and I live in sadness. I agree with everything you just said, the fact we don't have any solid lore on Hermanubis or the Temple of Silence or the experiments the Akademiya were planning to do to him before Cyrus stopped them... I would've preferred some of that in the first or second desert areas and less of the Gurabad clusterfuck with bottled Liloupar, for instance. Hell, they even tease us with Cyno saying in a voiceline that he'd gladly tell us about the spirit possessing him, and then... He doesn't lol 😢 I really liked that in the TCG event, he was starting to blend his two facets around us. He was in work mode as general mahamatra Cyno, but still cracked a couple of puns in front of Kirara and Charlotte, and also being extra when talking about the TCG championship. It was nice to see him serious and moral in an event, where normally it's clown mode for his writing, but comfortable enough around us to bleed some of the silliness. Also, don't you think it's curious how every region has a short king with limited event locked lore/development? Mondstadt has Albedo (the two infamous Dragonspine Christmases plus character progression in any cameo), Inazuma has Kazuha (all his and his family's backstory is in two events), Liyue has Xiao (tbf the chasm quest might be permanent but Liyue festivals are his progression as a character). Cyno really seems to be the Sumeru member of the four horsemanlets of the loregating

As someone who not only was hyped for Cyno ever since day one, mained him until Kaveh and Lyney/Lynette, still uses his character banner, and have studied him obsessively to write many, many fanfictions I believe Cyno has so much potential that Hoyo likes to gatekeep for no reason almost to a strange level. I've literally written fanfiction because Hoyo won't have Cyno and Razor meet. I'm still upset about it. I liked Cyno's quest because to me it shows the relationship between a student and their teacher/partner and the possible fear that Cyno has. That he'll live long enough to become corrupt like his old teacher/partner. By the end he is aware that he won't stay young forever and hopes that he can stay moral right even as he gets older (which also i'm not sure if he also has broken a few laws). But I agree for his story quest he should've had like some lore explanation on his past or at least Hermanubis because like even he says he's okay with sharing it! Heck they could've had more with Cyrus or even themes of Cyno being the few brown skined desert people to be in the Akademiya. It may be copium but i've heard rumors from leaks that we'll be getting a mummy girl and i'm praying this will explain some of Cyno's lore, if not i'm switching my character banners to Lyney.

I'm absolutely obsessed with cyno and analysed every possible lore hint regarding him and you summerized my thoughts so well because at this point I'm also grasping at straws and even the little we know is soooo interesting about him, he's connected to the desert AND sumeru city he's a middle man with the past and present as well given he has an ancient spirit in him who was directly under deshret (lay of al-ahmar) theres also so much of him showing his upbringing him being discriminated as a desert dweller while he was growing up in the akademiye and so so much more. also some people analysed his manga appearance and pointed out that he's using some type of modified abyss magic (probably taught by the temple of silence since they watch over anything khaenriah related as we find out on a random note in the middle of the desert)

on his second story quest, we dig into more detail of what the temple of silence is, how it was founded and how cynos related to it but we dont get an explanation on how its connected to khaenri'ah, we also dont really have a full image of his backstory we can only get ideas from what it was mentioned, we also dont get a full explanation behind his powers that was specifically shown in the manga. and on top of that we never knew where he was exactly from even after unlocking the entirety of the desert. his family and etc. sounds to me that theyre still gate keeping stuff

Cyno is one of my favorite Sumeru characters and I love the video you made about him! I would love to see more videos about the other Sumeru characters, like Tighnari and Collei, or anyone in general. Even characters from other regions as your videos are fun to listen to. The Sumeru archon was a lot of fun and character interactions are something I love to see in storytelling when it comes to any form of media. I do wish Hoyoverse would stop gatekeeping character lore or world lore behind special events though. I didn't start playing Genshin until May of 2023 so I even missed the Windblume event that was this year.

I'm just putting this together now, but Alhaitham and Cyno definitely knew each other prior to the archon quest. I don't know why but the archon quests in particular always gives me this feeling that people are meeting, or even being introduced to each other, the very first time in front of traveler-san. but like, these people are in a friends group, they probably have a group bar tab, Alhaitham and Cyno work in the same building!!! of course they know each other!

Actually I think the friend group only got established after the archon quest. From what I can recall the timeline is more like: - Kaveh and Alhaitham meet - Cyno stalks Tighnari for a while - Cyno and Tighnari officially meet after Cyno brings Collei back to Sumeru - Tighnari helps Kaveh out and gains Alhaitham's respect - Kaveh gets introduced to Cyno (we know this had been going on for a while since Cyno then developed a habit of bringing Kaveh over to have dinner at Gandharva Ville) - Archon Quest happens and Cyno and Alhaitham were forced to actually talk to each other - Alhaitham's character story 2 says that thanks to the time spent in the AQ, and Nahida's constant invitations of the rescue mission's participants, Alhaitham has been seeing them more often and had more or less become friends with them - Alhaitham joins the friend group now that there isn't much animosity between him and Cyno It isn't too unbelievable that Haitham and Cyno barely spoke to each other beforehand. They're not exactly very social and would rather focus on their work. Alhaitham did mention that they spoke before, but just not that much, and it's most likely for work stuff. Even Kaveh didn't befriend Cyno until Tighnari had to introduce them to each other.

I might get attacked for this but I have a big problem with Cyno: his visual design doesn't go with his reputation. Countless people say that he's intimidating even if you don't know about him, that he's visually dangerous, that you take a look at him and gulp in fear and... he's just a 5 foot kid. Like, I like his design no problem, it's just his boyish looks that make me mad. Where are his scars? Why is his design so clean? If you know nothing about him you would thing he's some kind of Anubis priest almost. He doesn't look dangerous, he looks like a kid that wants to look dangerous. I felt such a disonance each time someone told me about him and then thinking about his actual appearance. Some muscles would help no doubt, I get the feeling the clothes he wears are meant for an adult version of him and would work way better that way. But in general he has a kiddyish design: his eyes are big, he has no muscles, he wears skin tight clothes that leave him looking even skinnier. He just doesn't have the presence he should. I feel like a cape would help and definitely more weight to his armor, smaller eyes and in general a more adult look. For goodness sake, he looks older in official illustrations! Just look for the "Trial of the Scorching Sands" Web Event illustration. @moonlightbasket did a really cool redesign in twitter you can look for, though he looks like a priest he does look older and more dangerous. And the slight redesign by @waternaeng on twitter is just *chef's kiss* Also, his design takes away from the shock of how much a dork he is, in my opinion :( And he doesn't look like he's grown at all since the webcomic, unlike Collei, which is sad :(

that’s honestly also just a problem w the short male character models. i understand not all adults r tall and i actually like the idea that cyno is rather short, but w/ a muscular build… but that height category is sooo disjointed, how are characters like mika and freminet using the same model w the same build as characters like cyno and xiao, who are obviously older adults (ik xiao is hundreds of years old) & are incredible warriors??? they refuse to put muscle on any short male characters, they’ve started doing it to the tall ones finally w alhaitham but it’s honestly sad that the fucking scholar who can fight but chooses not to is buffer than the literal general & arguably strongest fighter in all of sumeru 💀 cyno can be a short king but man, i agree, give him some abs and muscle definition at least!

while i 100% get the impatience for cyno lore (and so many other character lore, lbr...), the game already has a lot of characters to juggle (and due to the nature of gacha, they have to keep making more) and is trying to strike a mixture between light-hearted and lore bomb events (and sometimes even the former can suddenly turn into the latter). i honestly do think hoyoverse hasnt forgotten about the temple of silence (worldbuilding is one of genshin's main priorities after all) but you have like zero confidence in them lol. i too dislike the flanderisation of his character in light-hearted events but that happens to other characters too, like poor itto turning into a manbaby.

I loved Cyno as a character. He's such an interesting well-rounded character but I think Hoyo ruined his personality. I feel Cyno rapidly became a vessel for the card game. Because whenever he would show up it was for the card events. Not to say showing a character have hobbies outside of their work life is wrong, how Hoyoverse handled Cyno's hobby was just awful. I wish we got more lore from him but I doubt we will see much more because how hoyo destroyed his character.

@@ussinussinongawd516 depends on how you use them and if they fit your playstyle. I use both consistently and they're really good, even at c0. At least Cyno does, I can't say for Albedo cause I immediately went for his c2 simply cause I like him as a character. Not too heavy investment either. Both are on my two strongest teams. Besides, that doesn't matter when it comes to if they get story reliance or not. Albedo appeared in several events, but only ran a few times so far. Cyno was in most of the main story, yet only has run once or twice. Their kits don't matter to story relevancy, which clearly Albedo does for most Khenrai'ah, Alice, and Rheindotter stuff at the least. Not every character has to be meta to be story relevant, or even liked. I mean, look at Dehya, Xinyan, Thoma, and others that have worse kits than Albedo and Cyno. Even they have enough followings for hyv to bring them back around often enough, even if just in events. Meanwhile, some characters with strong kits, like Sucrose, Heizou, and Ayato, have barely even appeared in events, let alone main story

His connection with the goddess of time, the big statue pointing at the abyss with written "the getaway to Celestia" or smth, the anemo statue of the seven upside down during a dainsielf quest... He's pretty mysterious so I would understand why his story quest would be gatekeeped until the climax of the lore.

I think Genshin is simply very slow burn in terms of storytelling because they want to develop deeply in both the world and its many characters. I see Cyno's portrayal in the Sumeru patches as their way to give us a solid foundation of who he is personally before introducing his role in the overarching plot of "rebelling against Celestia", "uncovering the truth of this world" etc etc. Don't forget how we have all those reincarnation theories because they gave us the world quests for us to get to know Deshret, Nabu Malikata and [Redacted] and how the desert people, who once had numerous thriving and powerful civilisations, came to the point where they have become oppressed by the Akademiya. Now Cyno is one of the leaders with Setaria spearheading efforts to educate their people and close the divisions between the desert and rainforest and they have taken small steps to show that they have concrete plans on improvement. Even when not introduced in a linear fashion there is still a sense of timeline and progression. This all to say that I disagree with the notion that Cyno has "missed potential", because HoYo has clearly hinted that they do have something in store about him, they simply want us to go through Fontaine first because they want to provide additional context before bringing the story back to him (and the rest of Sumeru). It's like saying because Kaveh hasn't had any meaningful appearance in any archon quests he's going to be irrelevant in the long run when one look at the amount of effort they put into him already signals that he's going to be important in the future (and I think they've already sown the seeds for it). I do understand the frustration that the Temple of Silence is only mentioned in Cyno's profile, one piece of paper in the desert and an optional conversation with Lisa but Kaveh's hangout has a Cyrus cameo (even if he doesn't appear on screen). There's also so much focus on the Sumeru boys being their fathers 2.0 and that speech by Sachin about how he thinks humanity is doomed to destruction see just adds more to the "history is cyclical" theme they have going on but in the same way Dottore brought up the fake sky since Scara first introduced the concept in version 1.1 I strongly believe that they will bring it up again in an archon quest so that that easily missed piece of lore will be well known to all this time, perhaps in a more dramatic fashion than just Cyno talking to Lisa about it (and hopefully we'll see Cyrus on screen too).

FINALLY SOMEONE SAYS IT. I was just complaining about how neglected Cyno has been for such an anticipated character. He didn't seem as widely-liked before Hoyo started playing more on his jokester side (or maybe I'm just biased since he's my favorite), but his serious side contains so much depth. I would LOVE to see him in a Fontainian event, as unlikely as that would be, because of his views on justice. NOT THAT I don't love his punniness though. The fact that he makes jokes to make other people relax is such a charming aspect of his personality, despite its complete ineffectiveness. I don't see Hoyo really changing their limited-event habits anytime soon, in regards to character lore. Now I don't understand why they made, say, Albedo's special quest limited while making the Shenhe quest permanent (because we can all agree Shenhe probably isn't as popular as Albedo). But characters like Kazuha and Xiao who played much more important roles in main story quests are fan favorites. From what I can tell, the only reason Cyno would be considered a fan favorite would be for his humor, not for his entire character. (The great travesty. Ugh.) Cyno is absolutely one of the most slept-on characters in this game, and that is saying a lot, lol. But then again... I'm probably biased. On the bright side, though? The Sumeru archon quest did him so well! I love that he wasn't as static as most characters usually are.

The best theory i found about cyno's design is how he, alhaitham, and kaveh are sort of a foil to King Deshret, just different aspect of him split into three while also simultaneously reflecting the priest of deshret. It's so cool seeing the 3 of them basically sharing one blue print but with much accentuated personality trait that represents deshret. Sadly, this remains mostly theory because as you said, 6 desert expansion and 0 cyno lore. What a wasted potential. I don't even blame the players for mischaracterizing him because every events with him was just him being a dork.

Doesn't he have deshret polearm ?? Like is there lore about how he got this weapon, also i'm curious about his lore obviously especially his spirit and the temple of silence, for Hermanubis i think that it was either a sage of Deshret or less chances but a Jinn and if it's not that then it's at least related to them because i don't see what it could be other than theses two options, however for the temple of silence i literally have no idea, like it's so random and why the hell would the grand sage obey them without questions ? It can be answered easly but until we get more informations about it and rn it just feels out of place in Sumeru lore . I was also intrigued like you by his reaction to Kasala's cutscene where it show deshret's sacrifice, Kasala looks exactly like Cyno but with brown hair as we see see in the cutscene, idk what it's supposed to mean but kinda sad we still don't have an explanation for it, i know it's a long ass comment but it's just my thoughts.

Cyno is my first ever triple crowned main and has been my favorite ever since the webtoon, I spent heavily for Cyno because I love his character so much. from the white tassel to deathmatch and finally Staff of the scarlet sands, Pulling for Nahida and her cons alongside pulling for Yelan and Baizhu because of their amazing synergy with Cyno just so I can have fun playing him. as an Artist and Lore addict, I've studied all his available lore, character designs and things that might connect with him, still grinding the thundering fury strongbox for 10 months now with no luck just to get even a significantly better set for him alone. planning on pulling for his constellations too in the future. Alongside this, I also enjoy maining Tighnari and their Dynamic is always so fun! he also made me enjoy the TCG because of how he interacts with it, His Eng VA is fun to watch too so the mix of his fun playstyle, great character design, awesome personality and pun-ny jokes between him and his Eng VA, I can't help but love this short general Mahamatra. Fun fact: Cyno's design isn't only based on Anubis the god of Judgement of souls, he is also based a little bit from Seth, the God of Storms, solidifying his character's just personality with focus as strong as steel but also makes it make sense that he is electro from Seth who "wants to change and challenge reality" portrayed by him wanting to make a better change fir the people of Sumeru and to guide them to a path of knowledge without sacrificing their morality or breaking the law.

I love how the sumeru cast interacts with each other but sometimes it makes the cast feel so much smaller and like a friend group instead of diffrent people with visions in sumeru

Devs actually also forgot alhaithams lore. Like they indroduced him and didnt tell anything more. You dont even know what kind of research hes doing even tho he mentions hes doing smt few times. All you know that he likes simple life and torturing Kaveh which very underwhelming considering how people speculated things about him like they do with neuvillette right now.

omg just everything you said I agree with. One of the reasons I love Sumeru so much is how much they fleshed out characters, even NPCs like Dunyarzard, whom I liked more than Dehya until her story quest (then disliked again cuz of her kit and addition to the normal roster). Cyno is the absolute pinnacle of that, and honestly a lot of characters still have a lot hidden about their past. I think we technically know the most about Nahida and Collei (from the comic) but then I want to know more about Cyno and Kaveh and Tighnari so much! And also agree about the whole locking lore behind limited events. I know nothing of about Albedo bc of the limited event and only learned from fanfiction, which is honestly where I've probably learned most of my lore at this point since Genshin doesn't like to easily share that. Also I'm with Nahida and genuinely love his puns and how drastically different he is between work and among friends, honestly seems to demonstrate he can actually balance work life unlike other scholars in Sumeru.

(I'll have a long one, and please bare with my misspells, or wierd wordings, i try my best ^ ^) As i know Mihoyo from what i experienced in the past ~1 year i play this game, they'll likely expend his lore in events, just so the playable character can stay the same way (i don't know if you get what i want to say). And this just hurts my heart is so many ways as an amatour story writher and comic drawer. I get it, with such a rich cast of characters, peronalities, it's hard to individualy expend each character's stories, like...hack, Scara's story was so stretched out throu the versions that's just crazy! And that's the whole reason i don't think the issue lies in the quantity of the characters. It lies, i believe, in the system of the game as a gacha game. Characters are bound to be static, so, for exaple, the Diluc i pulled in 2020, won't be different to the one that someone else pull in 2023. They remain the same, and the growth of the characters could be experienced throu...the limited events. I just...i really love Genshin's story, it gave me so much insiration to my own works, but this is one big flaw that does't seem to be fixable. And it's just sad. I remember when 3.4's Lantern Rite came, i was so hyped, but the same time, it felt wierd. And then i looked up for past Lantern Rites, and i sudenly understood why. The Xiao, i saw in the Chasm quest, and the Xiao i saw at 3.4 Lantern Rite...were like day and night. It felt wierd, becouse i did'nt had the chance to experience the past L.R.s, 'couse i did'nt played back then. My favorite characters are Tighnari and Xiao (yeah, the total opposites) and i fell fox the lader's character during the Chasm quest. Then harder when the trailer dropped for the 3.4 rerun. And the hardest during the event. And it's just hurts to see that Hoyo doing this with soo many more characters. Albedo, Candace, Cyno, just to name a few. And just like you said, lore where? Backstory where? I'm so eager to know Cyno's backstory. I'm just hungry for good story, it's the whole reason i keep playing. But the fact that Hoyo treats these informations as they do, it's just sad. And the fact that we even need to google for the offitial manga, read the lore of the million artifacts, and in-game books, like...i get it, but what if someone can't speak the language that well? For example, i'm hungarian, and the only reason i don't read the lore of the weapons and artifacts, is that it's draining. I pay attention and translate for myself in every-single-archon quest, and world quest, and events. I even go throu some character's unlockable lore that i own. But i already spend hours uppon hours of work, sweating blood and tears just to grasp a hint of the story. And i don't even want to mention the unvoiced Aranara quest line...oh dear archons above HEEELLPPP MEE... Hoyo can make so good story, but the same time wasting so much potential, in so many aspects of the game, that just really hurts.

Thank god Cyno is still entertaining while not being a cringelord(bad way) in events. Some events made the characters like Itto look like a bumbling dumbass and complain everytime he loses a game not because of being unlucky but because of clownery on his part in every scene he's in cuz of flanderization, even his tcg deck is a complete mess with no synergy whatsoever just so we could lose to itto using kuki's deck. I don't like Itto anymore no matter how much the voice actors are carrying him because of flanderization. Cyno's jokes are cringe but in a good way cuz it's actually funny when he explains the joke to everyone even though they don't listen and just move on. The electro anubis aesthetic is also very awesome and will uphold his morals till the very end

i didn't regret pulling for him since i loved him the day i saw him in the comics, but god is he not satisfying to play with. i kinda got mad because his kit is just razor 2.0 which i find a little tacky and awkward. i don't really care much about his damage, but honestly they could've made him compete with the top dps'. he's benched at level 90 (yes, i sacrificed my sanity to get those scarabs), but i'll play him from time to time
