Great video Leigh that’s one of my favourite episodes in series 28 the mischievous tinkle in Howard’s eyes and clever outside house affect while Howard walks past Clegg house with bells on his knees while Clegg and Truelove listen lol 🤣

A fascinatingly informative video, Leigh! Hello there just want to say thank you very much for all the videos of laughter the Summer Wine made. They are well written brilliantly presented well researched most of all thoroughly fascinating. If there was a DVD of all your episodes you've made Daphne include them in my Summer Wine collection. As they are on KZbin you are restricted on what you can include in your episodes if they were made for not on KZbin. You could have elaborated more by including clips from Last of the Summer Wine episodes possibly behind the scenes and also clips of the actors and actresses show their other works. But for me I'm just glad you've made these for a Summer Wine buff. Also the music that you have included at the beginning of the episodes absolutely beautiful can you tell me please who that is playing thank you. Hope you don't mind me messaging you all the best.

A couple of the videos do include brief clips, which is generally allowed as "fair use" in documentary and commentary videos, but when I do that the BBC get all the advertising revenue from the video. Seems more likely they were unfinished episodes that were ditched and maybe part of the script used in another. But even so, to simply have a blank space seems odd to be honest with you

Hi Peter. I'd definitely agree that if Roy wrote any episodes that were not used, they would have been used later, or he would write elements into later episodes. Although the circumstances are a bit different, Alan JW Bell did say that when Bill Owen died they had already spent about £1 million on partial filming of "Last Post and Pigeon" and the first 3 episodes of series 21, so ditching those episodes was not really an option. Ditching an part-made episode, would not usually be an option, bearing in mind how careful the BBC were with the budgets.

@@upstagedbyadog That has blown my mind on the amount of money that was spent. It can get a bit of a drag with speculation on 'lost' episodes with various series. However, in this instance it does appear that there is a gap for whatever reason.

Currently the BBC expect to spend between £360K to £900K per hour for "mainstream" comedy, depending calibre of writers and performers (and if studio and / or location filming). However for drama (not daytime soaps) from £500K to £1.1million per hour. There are other ranges for Children's, Factual and Entertainment shows. When you look at what is involved, you might wonder how they manage to do everything for such a small budget!

Hi Ray, that's a nice idea. Roy did not have anything to do with the production side of the show, he only visited the set or location a very few times in the 37 years it was made. Even if a script was unused, or an episode not broadcast he would be just as much in the dark as we are. If he had known, sadly he is now probably too unlikely to remember.

Perhaps they needed the extra budget for other shows so decided to cut the number of episodes thus giving the freedom to spend the money on the other eps.

That's an interesting idea Colin. However, if that was so, there could still be two unfinished or unmade episodes. I think it is unlikely, though, part of the idea of having a budget is to stick to what you've asked for, and they would have cut something to avoid an overspend.

Being that this is a British comedy & considering when the season was filmed, I would say it was to politically incorrect & went against British broad casting laws, so they where mothballed. Even todays repeat of Dad's Army gets a warning label on Amazon prime.

In 2008 when these episodes would have been broadcast, Last of the Summer Wine, was way past the potentially politically incorrect content that might have been seen in the early 1970s. Dad's Army was originally broadcast between 1968 and 1977, so there was potential for sensitive content. However, I suspect Amazon are keen to label anything with even the least possible risk of offence, simply to avoid complaints.
