yogibear2k2 there was mass unemployment in the UK. Many were impoverished. It is ironic, that this life led to such good music. Many bands wrote and performed songs based on the social situation.

I was born in 79. And looking back we were really, really shielded from just how poor everyone was in the UK in the 80s... I grew up in Liverpool and I wouldn't demean the people who loved me by allowing our experiences to be judged... But I was ALWAYS surrounded by music like this. And it was blissful.

I remember being dragged along by a girlfriend to one of The Missions early gigs at Newcastle Tiffanys when they were touring the Gods Own Medicine album. I really didn't get the whole goth thing this band were attached to - still don't & probably never will - but hand on heart that gig was one of the best I've ever seen. I was only a kid at the time, 15 years old I reckon, and since then I've been to hundreds of gigs but few will even come close to how good that Mission gig was. I always maintained a bit of a secret interest in them for years after & I'm a bit crushed I've missed their recent tour. To my ears anyway this band were from an era when music really mattered & often soundtracked the various directions & tailspins your life took moving forwards. I miss that era & listening to this incredible track this evening I'm instantly transported back there. A timeless classic from an absolutely incredible band.

@Ruddyscheeseemporium8 ай бұрын
Yeah I've always thought quite a bit of their stuff sounds very U2!
@vallejomach67215 ай бұрын
@@Ruddyscheeseemporium They always had a few things working against them though. That period in time much of the indie music press, NME & Melody Maker etc, was distinctly heavily skewed in favouring bands not like them...The Smiths, Wedding Present, The Fall, Jesus & The Mary Chain, My Bloody Valentine...those types. The Mission were often looked down on and accused by those in the press of being bombastic. Their image didn't fit for mainstream popularity, the whole thing with Andrew Eldritch and Sisters of Mercy...and, some very embarrassing TV appearances and interviews of Mr Hussey drunk out of his skull didn't do them any favours either.
@mdbrumbach14 ай бұрын
U2 by this time turned into complete shit. Unforgettable Fire was their end. There are still so many morons who think Rattle and Hum is "great music". You play them " Stories for Boys" and they hate it.

When music was music and also made good videos to go with it. Never was a mission fan but they could play live and was top notch too. But I did love this single and loved it. Good days with good music. Don’t get me wrong we did have crap music back then too who couldn’t play a note of music. But this is an example of good bands back then who could play music.
