A part of me recognizes that this is an effect of the abuse, but a part of me is frustrated that this is why a lot of people don’t interject themselves into the domestic issues. They want you to be their safe Harbour when they step away from the abuser, but then they end up going back and lashing out at you when you tell them they need to break free. And they always use the kids to justify staying too, even though they know that the abuse is damaging to the child as well. I’ve seen it in real life too. I don’t know what the answer is, but I will say that I have never seen anyone’s words convinced these women to leave. It’s always when they reach their breaking point, whatever that may be. For a coworker at my job last year, the breaking point after 20 years of constant abuse was when her own teenage son joined in the abuse and sent her to the hospital.
